Chapter 9: Chapter 9: Bring the Unfilial Son Back
"It's uncertain now; he still needs to be observed in the hospital for a while. However, the patient is no longer in life-threatening condition and has been transferred to a general ward. You can visit him now."
In the hospital room, Xiong Wenbai was covered in tubes, his complexion pale as if he were a corpse.
Xiong Rui walked over, red-eyed, and took his hand, "Dad, it's Ah Rui."
Xiong Wenbai opened his eyes.
"Dad, I know it was the Fu clan that did this to you. Rest assured, I will avenge you."
Xiong Wenbai's eyes suddenly widened, but with a stomach tube inserted, all he could muster was a moan.
In his heart, Xiong Wenbai roared: Are you insane? Picking a fight with Fu Xingzhou, do you want to shorten our family's lifespan?
But to Xiong Rui, his father's expression appeared to be one of agitation upon hearing the name Fu Xingzhou, a look of hatred so intense it seemed to scream vengeance.
Xiong Rui said with a resolute expression, "I understand."
Xiong Wenbai: Understand what, you fool?
Quick, someone, drag this rebellious son back here.

That afternoon, Ye Yan was writing up medical records in the office when Meng Tian's call came through.
"No cases today, you're that free?" With nobody else in the office, Ye Yan put the call on speakerphone.
Meng Tian belonged to the Criminal Investigation Department, specializing in major criminal cases. Even when there were no cases, she was usually incredibly busy.
"I pray every day for peace and quiet in Ao City." Meng Tian stuffed a steamed bun into her mouth, "What have you been busy with lately? Let's go out for dinner tonight."
Ye Yan glanced at the pile of charts on her desk, "No can do, a bunch of medical records to finish, and I have a surgery tonight."
"Sigh, one of us a doctor and the other a cop, we are truly a pair of star-crossed lovers." Meng Tian let out a sigh, "By the way, you often work late. Be careful on your way home. We just received a cooperation notification; there's an inland fugitive who has fled to Ao City. He's killed eight people and seriously injured one over two years—a professional killer."
Meng Tian promptly sent a photo.
The man in the photo was not tall and looked thin, wearing black-framed glasses, and he appeared scholarly, hardly fitting the image of a killing spree murderer.
Below the photo was a line of text: A reward of 50,000 for valid leads.
Ye Yan did not pay much attention and forwarded it to the department's group chat.
Xie Yang was the first to see it, bellowing about taking leave to capture the fugitive for the bounty.
But Chai Chen, after opening Ye Yan's WeChat and pondering for a moment, started to type: "How about you take my car tonight? It's safer, and we're on the same route anyway."
Ye Yan quickly replied, "Thanks, but no need. The security in my complex is pretty good." Chai Chen remembered that she lived in an old complex near Grand Hall, where having a doorman at the entrance was already considered good.
Saying so was probably a polite refusal, and Chai Chen, with his slim fingers pressing the keys, replied: "Okay, just take extra care then."
After Ye Yan responded with a "thank you" emoji, another message popped up.
"Do you like any of these?"
An image followed, full of various off-season handbags.
"Don't like any of them." Ye Yan's reaction was cool; she had no interest in wasting time on this.
"Then let the assistant buy them all, and you can pick at your leisure."
Annoyance shadowed Ye Yan's eyes, "Fu Xingzhou, do you have more money than you know what to do with? I suggest you come in for a check-up to see if there's something wrong with your brain."
"Didn't you experience firsthand how I am physically last night? If you've forgotten, ask that insatiable little mouth of yours."
Even through the screen, Ye Yan could imagine the man's nasty demeanor, the mischievous smirk playing on his lips.
She had to take a deep breath to suppress the frustration bubbling up inside her.
Forget it, it's best to compete with peers, not to argue with idiots.
Ye Yan tossed her phone aside, no longer replying to the messages.
~
Fu Xingzhou had to return to Hong Kong due to some issues with a project on the Kowloon Peninsula, giving Ye Yan several days of tranquility.
Today, she was off an early shift, and the road was surprisingly unclogged.
After parking her car, Ye Yan picked up her bag and headed toward the elevator.
She hadn't walked far when she suddenly stopped and looked back.
Behind her, the place was deserted, silent except for the unusually bright lights above the parking lot.
In the past couple of days, every time she came home, she felt as though someone in the parking lot was watching her every move, yet when she turned around to look, she found nothing.
She couldn't tell if she was being paranoid because of that cooperation notice, but she was definitely on edge.
Ye Yan took a deep breath and suddenly quickened her pace toward a particular spot in the parking lot.
The security in this compound was top-notch, it wasn't common for shady individuals to slip in unnoticed.
Ye Yan peered into a row of car windows as she passed by, figuring that if someone were indeed spying, they must be hiding inside a vehicle.
Not far away, there was a black Audi with tint so dark that from a distance, one couldn't make out anything inside the car.
Just as Ye Yan was about to approach, someone suddenly came close from behind. Through the reflection in the car window, she saw the person's hand raised high with something in it.
She quickly turned around, stepping back swiftly, startling the other person as well.
After staring at each other for a moment, the security guard finally exhaled in relief and lowered the baton in his hand, "Miss Ye, you scared me to death, I thought you were trying to steal a car."
Ye Yan thought to herself, didn't you scare me to death too?
"I dropped something and was looking for it," Ye Yan made up an excuse on the spot. Her behavior just now had indeed been somewhat suspicious, so it was no wonder the guard had been doubtful.
"What is it? I can help you look for it."
"No need, I probably left it at the office." Ye Yan smiled, "By the way, has anything strange happened in the parking lot recently?"
"Nothing strange per se, just an owner mentioned their license plate was stolen, but they have several cars and quickly got a new one issued."
The people living in such spacious flats were quite wealthy, except for Ye Yan.
To enter the parking lot of the compound, one must scan the vehicle's license plate, otherwise they couldn't get in at all.
"Do you remember what that license plate number was?"
The guard shook his head, since the concerned party didn't pursue the matter further, they just took a record and let it go.
"I have the record over there, I'll look it up and let you know," the guard offered earnestly, "Miss Ye, do you want me to escort you up?"
"No, that's okay, carry on with your work."
The guard continued patrolling with the baton, while Ye Yan took out her elevator card and entered the elevator.
Within a certain black sedan in the parking lot, someone slowly sat up from the back seat. Under a long brimmed hat, black metal eyeglass frames glinted with a sinister sheen.
~
Ye Yan unlocked her door and returned home.
"Miss Ye is back," the housekeeper was in the kitchen preparing dinner, "The sir said he won't be back from his business trip until late, and told the miss not to wait for him."
Ye Yan silently rolled her eyes: When had she ever waited for him?
Someone was certainly feeling too good about themselves.
After dinner, the housekeeper cleaned up and left.
Ye Yan sat at her desk, put on her anti-blue light glasses, and continued working.
A message popped up on her phone with a "ding".
The sender was an unfamiliar number, but Ye Yan guessed who it was immediately.
It was the security guard; they had all the homeowners' contact information saved.
Ye Yan stared at the string of license plate numbers, then suddenly took off her glasses, threw on a jacket, grabbed her phone, and rushed into the elevator in a hurry.
She couldn't be misremembering; that was the license plate of the black Audi. She had intended to go over and check it, if it weren't for the guard's appearance which had interrupted her.
The supposedly lost license plate had shown up again in the parking lot of the compound, and there was definitely something fishy about it.
Thinking of those eyes that were always watching her, she shivered uncontrollably.
Ye Yan stepped out of the elevator with the intention to verify the black Audi's parking spot; if it was still in the same place, she would immediately call the police.
From a distance, she suddenly saw a figure lying face down in front of the car, dressed in a security uniform, holding a baton, lifeless or alive unknown.
