Chapter 11: Chapter 11: Are You Worried About Me?
His outer garment was nowhere to be found; he was only wearing a white shirt with two buttons ripped off at the neckline, covered in splattered blood, looking shockingly horrific.
He looked as if he had just emerged from a pile of corpses, like Xiuluo himself. He stared at her from a distance, his expression unfathomably deep.
Under the cover of night, Ye Yan met his gaze; that hint of relief was extraordinarily well concealed.
"Hey, Captain Zhu," Fu Xingzhou spoke somewhat lazily.
The police officer referred to as Captain Zhu smiled, "What can I do for you, Mr. Fu?"
"Just remember to send my car back after you're done inspecting it," he spoke to Captain Zhu, his eyes fixed on Ye Yan all the while, "That's my new favorite, I cherish it very much."
"This vehicle is also part of the physical evidence; we will contact you to retrieve it once we collect all the relevant materials," Captain Zhu responded pleasantly.
Fu Xingzhou seemed unconcerned, gently caressing the bloodstains on his shirt with his long fingers, "Does this count as acting bravely for a just cause? I heard the guy was even a wanted criminal. If you're giving out a commendation flag, just send it to the Royal Sand Casino."
The suspect's wrists and ankles were broken, at least six ribs fractured, and all his teeth were smashed; other internal injuries were yet unknown.
He had brutally tortured a man to the verge of death and a mere claim of "self-defense" easily absolved him of any crime, earning him the title of "good citizen" despite the fact he wasn't even from Ao City.
Captain Zhu laughed somewhat awkwardly, "We still need you to come to the station to make a statement, Mr. Fu."
Ye Yan watched as Fu Xingzhou got into the police car.
~
By the time Fu Xingzhou came home, it was well past midnight, still dressed in the blood-stained shirt, which had long since dried.
The warm-toned lights in the hallway outlined his figure, revealing a hint of loneliness and fatigue.
Fu Xingzhou intended to grab a glass of water but turned around to see someone sitting on the sofa.
Apparently awakened by him, her drowsy peach blossom eyes looked at him confusedly.
A few strands of her hair mischievously clung to her pale neck, disappearing into the crevices of her chest.
"Why did you end up sleeping on the couch?" Fu Xingzhou walked over.
Hearing the familiar voice, Ye Yan fully awoke, casting a disapproving look at his blood-stained shirt.
Though she was long accustomed to the smell of blood.
"I'm going to take a shower first," Fu Xingzhou raised his hand to unbutton his shirt, a simple gesture made sensually appealing by his devil-may-care attitude, making faces flush and hearts race.
Ye Yan quickly averted her gaze, hugging the pillow in her arms tightly.
Soon after, Fu Xingzhou emerged in clean pajamas, refreshed.
He sat down beside Ye Yan, lifting a strand of her hair, "Why aren't you sleeping?"
"Is any of that blood on you yours?" Ye Yan asked.
Fu Xingzhou seemed taken aback for a moment, then assertively pulled her into his arms, "Could I take this as Dr. Ye showing concern for me?"
"You're overthinking; it's merely a doctor's instinct."
He grabbed her hand and slid it under his pajamas, "Why don't you feel around and see if there are any injuries?"
As Ye Yan's fingertips touched his chest muscles, beneath the firmness, it felt as if a great power was burgeoning.
She tried to pull her hand away, but he pressed it firmly downward, past his waist, toward a more intimate area, all the while sporting a teasing smirk, staring at her flushing face.
"Does it feel good?"
"Fu Xingzhou, do you know what time it is?"
Ye Yan flinched from his heat; this man always became aroused indiscriminately, not caring about time or place.
"Do doctors need to consider time when treating patients?" Fu Xingzhou looked up with a handsome face radiating innocence, a truly deceptive expression.
Ye Yan knew he wasn't injured, the large stains of blood all came from the unfortunate fugitive.
Earlier, she was worried that Fu Xingzhou might be killed, now she felt sympathy for the beaten man, having seen his miserable state clearly.
"You knew this person wanted to kill you?" Ye Yan's mind cleared up quite a bit from the disturbance.
Fu Xingzhou was not the "good citizen" he always claimed to be; he tended to be lazy and rarely meddled in affairs. His chasing after the car must have been premeditated.
"Otherwise, do you think I wanted to race cars with him?" Fu Xingzhou's sharp nose almost touched hers, a hand gently kneading her waist. His mature masculine scent mixed with the fragrance of shower gel, intertwining into a seductive wine in the dark night.
There were quite a few people who wanted to kill Fu Xingzhou; not long ago, he had narrowly escaped getting shot.
"Can you speak without getting handsy?" Even Ye Yan couldn't escape the net of desire he wove, "What's the deal with the dead body?"
"He killed the Audi car owner and stole his car." Fu Xingzhou casually picked up a cigarette and sniffed it at his nose, but he didn't smoke it.
"You honestly answer me, just now, were you concerned about me?" The man pulled her closer, his invasive presence growing stronger, his eyes deep as ink.
"Shouldn't I be concerned about you?" Ye Yan suddenly curved her brows, flashing a sly look, "Mr. Fu, you didn't set any prenuptial agreement. If you died, I could get half your fortune."
Ye Yan ignored Fu Xingzhou's darkened face and cheerfully went to sleep.
Fu Xingzhou's fortune held no interest for her; if they divorced, she planned to take nothing but her freedom.
"Heartless little thing..." Behind her, came Fu Xingzhou's cursing.
~
Fu Xingzhou was indeed tired yesterday; he woke up with his head still somewhat muzzy.
He stepped out of the bedroom, intending to grab a glass of water from the kitchen, only to see the little woman busily working inside.
She looked refreshed, radiating brilliantly.
She got mad at him yesterday, was that why she was so happy?
"Auntie?" Fu Xingzhou took his cup, filled it with water, and leaned against the doorframe to drink while he talked to her.
"She took a day off." Ye Yan placed the fried eggs she had cooked onto a plate.
She rarely entered the kitchen and had spent a while finding the tool to fry eggs, which was heart-shaped.
It would be fine if it was just for her, but making heart-shaped eggs for Fu Xingzhou felt oddly weird.
As expected, Fu Xingzhou glanced at the eggs with a teasing look on his face.
Ye Yan hated the way he mockingly twisted his face; she waved the spatula to shoo him away: "If you want to help, stay, if not, stop bothering me."
"Dr. Ye, you're being a bit unreasonable here, I've only drunk a glass of water and said one thing."
Ye Yan glared at him: "Not even making faces is okay."
Fu Xingzhou: "..."
He would just avoid the conflict.
Halfway through their meal, Ye Yan's phone urgently rang.
She wiped her mouth and picked up the phone.
Whatever was said on the other end, she quickly stood up, grabbed her coat, and headed out.
Probably because she was too hurried, Ye Yan's car wouldn't start.
Just as she was getting frantic, two light taps came on the car window, and Fu Xingzhou's handsome face appeared.
"Fu Xingzhou, please check it out for me, the car won't start." Normally, Ye Yan would wish to keep her distance from him, but now she felt particularly grateful to see him.
"Get out."
Fu Xingzhou sat in the driver's seat and, after fiddling around for a bit, the familiar sound of the engine came to life.
Her car was alive again.
"Thank goodness, thank you."
After fastening her seatbelt, Ye Yan looked at the man next to her, also securing his seatbelt.
"Don't you have a car?"
