Chapter 394: The Last and Only Memory
As Dante and his group kept watching the memories that were stored in the red stone, the blurry, holographic image of Xander showed him fighting multiple mages all over Terra.
In the midst of the chaotic memories, a scene appeared for a few seconds, showing Xander and a 10-year-old version of Dante.
Right as the image appeared, Dante slightly frowned with discomfort. On the other hand, Megan was surprised to see a younger version of the warlock, believing he looked adorable, though she didn't say that aloud.
While Dante was growing up, Xander would leave him alone for a few weeks before returning and staying with him for a few more.
The warlock's teacher never mentioned what kind of missions he was doing when he wasn't in Shadowvale, so he wasn't aware that he had been fighting other mages.
In the memories that were shown by the stone, Xander would leave Dante, then appear fighting groups of mages, then go back to training with Dante.
It was his usual routine, until he didn't return to see his pupil.
When the stone was reaching its limit, it showed a scene of Xander fighting a group of formidable mages who seemed to be in the middle of a magical ritual.
In the middle of their battle, one of the mages activated the spell they had prepared and produced their own version of the convergence portal, swallowing all of the present mages and throwing them out into a whole new world—Earth.
"I'm sorry, Dante. I don't think I can return…" The voice of Xander echoed inside the shack.
"I promised your parents that I would care for you for a bit longer… I guess I'm not good at keeping promises," Xander continued, his tone laced with sadness.
'My parents…?' Dante wondered. Hearing his teacher speaking was painful, but he stayed calm and listened closely.
"Listen, Dante. Your parents were my best friends…- They are also the reason why I told you to stay away from the gods," Xander said.
The man wasn't talking with anyone in particular, as if he knew that he would leave his memories behind for Dante to see.
Both of Dante's parents were Specialist warlocks, just like him. They weren't famous around the world since they liked to keep their identities a secret, but they were responsible for many events that occurred in Terra.
After the pair of warlocks utterly destroyed an army of holy knights under Aelara's service, they became the main target of the goddess.
The angels scoured Terra for years, looking for the two warlocks who had to hide themselves from their pursuers, and it was during that time that Dante was born.
Knowing that it wouldn't take much longer for the angels to find them, the pair had no choice but to leave their son in Shadowvale's orphanage, where he could pass as another abandoned baby.
Dante's parents were aware that they wouldn't be able to hide for much longer, and after asking Xander to take care of their child with tears in their eyes, the last and only memory of his parents dissipated.
The warlock was shocked by the revelation. He had believed that he was truly abandoned for hundreds of years, and he had made peace with those feelings a long time ago.
He never had an interest in knowing his parents, believing that they were just two warlocks who didn't want to raise a child. However, Xander's memories were turning all of his beliefs upside-down.
Numerous emotions swelled up, making Dante unable to contain his constantly suppressed umbra under control, unconsciously unleashing his overwhelming aura inside the shack.
Megan and Vesnia lowered their heads from the weight of Dante's aura, unable to move freely while trying to keep themselves from falling to their knees.
The witch, however, didn't seem fazed by the powerful umbra surrounding her home, taking a few steps forward to approach Dante.
"Not bad, kid…" Baba-Yaga muttered, tapping the warlock's forehead with a single finger, making all of Dante's umbra dissipate in an instant as he fell unconscious.
Megan quickly ran and grabbed Dante's head before it could hit the floor, asking the witch what she had done.
"I merely put him to sleep. It's dangerous being around an emotional warlock," the witch replied, waving her hand and making Dante's body levitate softly, laying him in bed.
As Baba-Yaga sat back down on her seat, she politely opened her hand, signaling the two women to sit on the couch and offering an explanation.
Of course, learning about his parents was shocking for Dante, but that wasn't the catalyst for his emotions going out of control—it was the culprit, Goddess Aelara, who made his anger rise.
If the warlock had known that Aelara was behind his parents' deaths, he would have never accepted her blessing with his party.
Moreover, if Xander had never disappeared, Dante would have heard of the goddess's schemes before leaving his home to venture into the world.
Still, Baba-Yaga's words didn't explain how she got hold of Xander's memories, so she revealed that she was also friends with Dante's parents in the past. However, she went through the convergence decades before Dante was born.
A few months after Xander arrived on Earth, they met each other while hunting a mage in Africa who worked for "Nekxis," and it was around that time that Xander created the stone with his memories.
A bit hesitant, Megan asked if Xander was still alive, but the woman denied it with a somber expression and a head shake.
"I'll explain everything in detail when the kid wakes up. For now, are any of you hungry?" Baba-Yaga asked the pair, who looked at each other with slight confusion.
They were used to talking to nonchalant individuals who didn't seem to weigh the gravity of situations, but seeing that Dante was the only one whose emotions blew up made them feel like they were the nonchalant ones.
Understanding that it would be better to wait for Dante's awakening, Megan accepted the offer, prompting the witch to wave her fingers around, making all of the pans and utensils levitate and cook the food on their own as the witch lay back on her seat.
