Chapter 223: Akanon's Visit
Compared to death, teaching Archimonde to read was even more despairing.
It truly felt like a past life spent slaughtering pigs and this one teaching, or a past life killing people and this one teaching language arts.
Although Archimonde was a generation's Demon Lord, second only to one and above tens of millions, with the unparalleled strength of Hell, he was genuinely illiterate. Hell had no need for the written word; consuming the soul of one's kind could result in a certain probability of acquiring their skills and even some memories. The more powerful the demon, the more memories and skills the devourer could gain. Thus, every Demon Lord possessed terrifying Soul Power, but demons were not very adept at using them.
What drove Lando to despair was not only that Archimonde was illiterate but also that his learning ability was excessively low. The elven script, which appeared so simple and merely required memorization to master, seemed like inscrutable heavenly runes to him – learned one moment, forgotten the next.
Upon entering the room, Archimonde plopped down, "Where did we stop just now?"
"Up to here." Lando pointed to the second passage of elven script.
"Ah? Really? Why don't I recognize a single word?" Archimonde, stunned, widened his eyes but couldn't read a word.
Lando slapped her forehead. This was the dumbest, dumbest, dumbest student she had ever seen!!!
But, regrettably, Lando was not in a position to scold him.
Suppressing her irritation, she said, "Lord Archimonde, we have already spent three days on these mere fifteen words!"
"Is that so? No rush, no rush. We have plenty of time," Archimonde laughed heartily. "You just focus on teaching well. I'll pick it up quickly."
Quick, my ass! Lando cursed inwardly; she would rather switch places with Ze Xiu and sit on that suffocating throne than continue teaching Archimonde to read.
Akanon left the Demon King's throne and arrived at Liesuotus's territory.
Faced with this unexpected visit, Liesuotus quickly came to greet him, "Why have you suddenly taken an interest in the matters of Hell?"
"We can't let outsiders trample over Hell at will," Akanon sighed.
Liesuotus sneered, "So, you've come to ask for my help?"
"That's one way to put it," Akanon didn't waste words. "If you're willing, help me patrol the three thousand realms of the middle layer."
"The eighteen layers of Hell, the three thousand realms of the middle layer – you do have a high opinion of me," Liesuotus sneered, neither agreeing nor outright refusing.
"It's not necessary for you to oversee it personally, but if I find any invading enemies, you only have to arrive as soon as possible."
"Alright." Although Liesuotus held some opinions about Akanon, he considered it necessary to maintain face with the guy. After all, he might need Akanon's help with Elena's situation in the future, and gathering some favors would make speaking later a bit more convenient, wouldn't it?
After delivering the task to Liesuotus, Akanon immediately left, heading toward the Great Black Fort of the Spider Mother.
Thanks to the efforts of the lesser demons, the Spider Mother quickly reconstructed the fortress, now languidly resting within.
Akanon didn't consider himself an outsider; he pushed open the door and entered the Great Black Fort.
The demons guarding the fort initially prepared to stop the intruder, but upon recognizing the massive Soul Power signature hidden beneath the flesh, they involuntarily stepped back and knelt on one knee, "We greet you, Lord Akanon."
"Is the Spider Mother asleep inside?"
"Reporting to you, sir, yes," the great demon responded respectfully. "Please wait a moment while we wake the Spider Mother."
"No need, I will seek him out personally."
"Yes." The great demon wanted to intervene, but under Akanon's mighty Soul Power's gaze, he dared not make any move.
Delving deeper into the Great Black Fort, multitudes of webs enfolded the solid fortress as if on guard against another sudden explosion that might damage its abode once more.
As Akanon stepped onto the delicate strands of webbing on the floor, the Spider Mother's eyes snapped open. Through the deep darkness of the corridors, she saw Akanon moving deeper inside.
Her surprise was immense at his visit, "Why have you come?"
"Long time, no see, Spider Mother."
"Yes, it's been a long time, Akanon, seems like tens of thousands of years," the spider mother said with a hint of reminiscence, then as if remembering something, she spoke up, "Is it because of my husband's impending resurrection?"
"Indeed," Akanon approached the spider mother, whose massive spider form liked to hide within the confines of her crowded fortress, who knows if it was some strange habit or something else.
"My husband's resurrection is indeed a joyous occasion. What do you wish to discuss with me?"
"Really? Do you truly think only that, Lady Spider Mother? Then why aren't you by the Demon King's side, instead curling up within your own fortress, indifferent to the affairs of the world?"
Akanon's words left the Spider Mother silent.
Seeing the Spider Mother speechless, Akanon softly said, "You can trust me, Lady Spider Mother."
In response, the Spider Mother remained silent, simply watching the other with her eight crimson eyes.
Akanon was patient as well, leaning there, motionless.
After a long time, the Spider Mother released a burst of red mist, then transformed into a sultry young woman dressed in a red evening gown that covered only the essentials, her every move filled with endless allure. Perhaps this was the real reason why the Hell Demon King chose her as a wife?
When the Spider Mother revealed her human form, Akanon immediately bowed and said, "Akanon pays his respects to the Empress."
"That's too formal," the Spider Mother helped him up, "Follow me to the study to talk."
The two entered the study, and with the activation of a magic Array, their conversation was completely isolated.
Once sure there was no eavesdropping, the Spider Mother finally spoke, "The revival of my lord is indeed a matter of great joy, yet, I always have the feeling that someone harbors ill intentions. Thus, I have been pretending to turn a blind eye while secretly monitoring their every move."
Akanon nodded, "That is precisely why I have come."
"Then, Lord Akanon, please tell, what have you discovered?"
"May I ask the Empress, do you believe in the likelihood of the Demon King's resurrection?"
The Spider Mother slightly furrowed her brows, "Where is this coming from?"
Akanon sighed deeply, "It seems You also find it unlikely."
Realizing her thoughts were seen through, the Spider Mother, reminded of the other's special ability, dropped the pretense, "Indeed, my husband has been dead for far too long, how could such weak souls suffice to revive him completely? Even if resurrected, I fear he would not be the sovereign he once was."
"Therefore, Archimonde and Liesuotus have their own special motives!" Though the Spider Mother was irritated, she felt powerless about it.
"Yes, their target must be the Heart of Hell. Whoever holds the Heart of Hell is the ruler of Hell, the Demon King. Liesuotus is war-obsessed; for thousands of years, he has held his forces back, not because he's changed, but to brew this war spirit for even greater outbursts in the future."
The Spider Mother nodded in agreement, "And what about Archimonde? With his strength diminished, how can he overcome Liesuotus?"
"Diminished strength does not mean there's no chance," Akanon analyzed, "If the one who established the Demon King's resurrection Array has a secret deal with Archimonde, to snatch the victory from the jaws of defeat is not impossible."
"And what about you?" After listening to Akanon's analysis, the Spider Mother suddenly stared at him intently, "Akanon!"
"Me?" Akanon laughed heartily, "This old servant wishes not to engage in any dispute, yet does not want any of them to obtain the Heart of Hell and become the Demon King."
"So, you've come to me to propose an alliance, to foil their plans and prevent them from becoming the new Demon King?"
"Not quite."
Seeing Akanon shaking his head, the Spider Mother was utterly baffled, "Then what do you want me to do?"
"This old servant simply wishes for you not to intervene."
The Spider Mother, frowning deeply, said sternly, "Akanon, are you serious? Even if there is a one percent chance of my husband's resurrection, I should fight for him, to stop Archimonde and Liesuotus."
"But can you stop them? In terms of forces, you have only one percent of what Liesuotus has, one thousandth of Archimonde's, in terms of strength, you are more than a notch weaker than Liesuotus, though stronger than the current Archimonde. However, you must know, Archimonde commands many Demon Lord-level Demons, even sheer numbers could bog you down."
"Is there not also you, Akanon? Do you not wish to see the Demon King's resurrection?"
"This old servant wishes it so, but it is not realistic, nor necessary."
