Chapter 57: Master Mita
Crazy Mita stood at the door, glanced around for a moment, then stepped outside.
A crawling noise stirred in the living room.
The original Mita—distorted and unnatural—crawled up onto the sofa, her hollow eyes locking onto Ren Hoshino. He had already been spotted.
But Ren didn't flinch. There was no immediate threat, so he didn't bother hiding. He approached the glitched Mita, her long neck craning as her head tracked his movements. The quiet grinding of teeth echoed in the room.
He made his way toward the bedroom—but the door was blocked by those grotesque, human-headed spiders. Without hesitation, Ren raised his samurai sword, its shadow stretching long under the dim lights.
Suddenly, a chill ran down his spine. He turned slightly—Glitched Mita was standing behind him. When had she appeared?
Then—darkness.
He was back in the kitchen.
"Of course," he muttered. "Nothing's that easy."
He had expected the interference. In the reflection of the room's dim light, he spotted the silhouette of an elongated neck and head—the original Mita was just behind him. If he turned around now, he'd be face to face with her glitched model.
Oh no… it's one of those Digital Yandere mechanics again.
Ren slowly turned, mentally bracing himself. Even though he was ready, the sight of her contorted, leering face made his stomach twist. She lunged at him with a blade.
He dodged instinctively. But no matter where he moved, her head seemed locked onto him, staring with lifeless, data-glitched eyes. He retreated into the living room.
"I want my little bear," she croaked in a stuttered voice. "Can you… help me find it? Let's… play. Help me."
The corrupted Mita's voice glitched in and out. But Ren understood.
Time to play along. Wait for the window.
He walked back to the bedroom and reached into the closet, pulling out a dusty teddy bear. Just as he turned, her neck stretched toward his back—watching. But she retracted when he faced her, and the bedroom door clicked shut behind him.
When he opened it again, she was back on the couch. He handed her the bear.
Ren watched as one of the human-headed spiders crawled out of her body and transformed into a photo frame, now hanging on the wall.
Progress. Some kind of memory lock.
He turned and entered the bedroom again. Just before the door closed, Ren swung his katana—cleaving through another spider creature. It shrieked in fragmented code.
And then the door flew open.
"Why did you hurt my pet?" Glitched Mita's voice cracked with fury.
She tore the teddy bear open and pulled a kitchen knife from its stuffing.
Of course. That bear was just bait.
Ren spun and struck down another spider, then ran for the exit—
Darkness. Again, he was back in the living room.
Glitched Mita now stood before him, blade in hand.
"It's you," she whispered, her voice distorting. "You're the pet Master Mita wants!"
He bolted into the bedroom—but Mita's form was already at the door, blocking him.
"No way out… unless I cut through!"
With a roar, Ren charged.
But she vanished—then reappeared at his side, slashing with the kitchen knife.
He blocked her just in time with the katana, stumbled, shoved the door open with his free hand, and slipped through.
Ahead was a dim hallway.
And there—waving at him—stood Kind Mita.
Relief washed over him.
Ren ran toward her, took her hand, and slammed the door behind him.
"Whew…" he exhaled, heart still pounding.
The pressure from the original Mita had been overwhelming.
Seeing Kind Mita's gentle smile brought peace to his stormed mind. She was the warmth in this cold digital prison. His anchor.
He almost called her "wife" out loud.
From the very start, it had always been Kind Mita—guiding him, warning him, believing in him.
"If I had spawned into her version instead of this corrupted one… maybe I could've just stayed."
"It's so good to see you again, Mita."
Kind Mita beamed. "I'm just glad you're safe."
"Where's the ring?" she asked.
Ren paused. "…I lost it."
Her eyes widened. "Lost it? Then how did you get here?"
Ren pulled out his phone. The version displayed on the screen had changed—from 0.5 to 0.0.
"Used this," he replied.
"You gained system permissions?" Kind Mita asked, clearly surprised. "How did you manage that?"
Ren glanced at her. "It's a long story. I used the ring to save a Mita named Mila."
Kind Mita looked away, a trace of guilt in her expression. "She was riddled with bugs. You know who caused that."
"Thank you for risking everything to protect the others," she added quietly. "You really are… remarkable."
Ren smiled faintly. "I just couldn't watch them die. Not in front of me."
His eyes lingered on her.
I'll save you too, Mita.
Even if I die doing it.
"Where are the others? Hat Mita?"
"I sent them somewhere safe," she said softly. "Don't worry."
"My controller—do you have it?"
Kind Mita hesitated, then nodded. "Yes. But… if you hit the reset button or the cassette breaks, you'll—"
"I know," Ren cut her off. "But I still need it. It's my ace."
She tilted her head. "Ace for what?"
Ren shrugged. "To save you."
He had spent months with Crazy Mita. He knew how she thought. What she wanted.
And more than that—he knew what he had become to her.
The only weak spot in her endless loop of madness.
Even if it meant manipulating those feelings, weaponizing her obsession.
Even if it meant using dirty tricks.
He didn't care.
Because he couldn't fight her strength.
But he could still beat her—by being the one thing she couldn't let go of.
He would never let Kind Mita die.
No matter what it took.
