Chapter 78: Chapter 78: I Really Want to Keep a Low Profile
As Lin Fan listened to their conversation, he suddenly realized that the two little ones he had contracted were far from ordinary.
The small Nagas nearby sensed the aura emanating from Heloi. They exchanged glances before turning around and rushing into the Naga Temple to report.
Before long, the two small Nagas returned, bringing with them several humanoid Nagas.
Leading them was a man, accompanied by a young girl who didn't seem very old.
The man walked up to the group, his gaze scanning each of them before finally settling on Heloi.
"Are you Cassiopeia?" he asked.
Contrary to what one might expect, there was no reverence in his tone.
"Yes, I am," Heloi replied in a steady voice.
The man glanced at Lin Fan and Lilian.
"And these people are…?"
"My master and his friends," Heloi answered calmly.
Hearing this, the man raised an eyebrow thoughtfully. His eyes briefly passed over Lordsen before finally stopping on Lin Fan.
"So, it's this gentleman?" He looked Lin Fan up and down.
Lin Fan met his gaze without flinching.
"That's right. Nice to meet you."
The man let out a slight scoff.
"Just a mere human from Continent One, yet he dares call himself Lady Cassiopeia's master?"
Lin Fan raised an eyebrow.
Before he could respond, Lilian suddenly dashed forward, iron sword in hand, pressing its sharp edge directly against the man's throat.
At the same time, the other humanoid Nagas swiftly drew their own long swords, pointing them at Lilian.
Seeing this, the man let out a soft chuckle.
"Young lady, this is the Naga Temple. Do you really think it's wise to attack me here?"
His tone carried a hint of warning, but Lilian remained completely unfazed.
She stood tall, her aura fierce and unyielding.
"So what if it's the Naga Temple? Let me warn you—if you dare speak ill of him even once more, I will end you."
The group remained locked in a tense standoff, weapons drawn but unmoving.
After a moment, the man's expression shifted into a polite smile.
"Put your swords away," he ordered the Nagas beside him.
They hesitated briefly but eventually lowered their weapons.
However, Lilian did not budge—her sword still pressed firmly against the man's throat.
Now, the man's patience wore thin. He raised an eyebrow.
"And you're still not putting your sword away?"
Lilian did not move.
Only when Lin Fan spoke up did she finally lower her weapon.
"Stand down."
Reluctantly, Lilian withdrew her sword, but her attitude remained just as cold.
She locked eyes with the man, her gaze as sharp as a poisoned dagger.
"If you dare insult him again, I will kill you." Her voice was icy.
The man chuckled lightly, though a brief flash of killing intent flickered in his eyes.
Lin Fan caught it immediately.
The man lowered his gaze for a moment, and when he looked up again, his expression was much friendlier. He placed his left hand over his chest and performed a Naga clan greeting.
"My name is Curtis. This young lady here is Anlo, the nineteenth-generation Saintess of the Naga Clan."
Hearing this, Anlo placed her left hand over her chest and bowed respectfully to Heloi.
"Greetings, Saintess."
Heloi waved a hand dismissively.
"No need for formalities. I am no longer a Saintess."
She then turned back to Curtis, her gaze darkening.
"Are you the current clan leader?"
"That's correct," Curtis replied with a courteous bow.
Heloi's expression grew colder.
"How did the previous clan leader die?"
She needed to know what had happened to the Naga Clan after she left.
The Naga Temple only selects a new Saintess once every thousand years, but unless the clan leader dies, their position remains unchanged.
When Heloi left, the previous clan leader was still alive and well. Yet, in just three thousand years, the leader had been replaced by this Curtis fellow.
Just now, she had briefly scanned his aura. Curtis was not even four thousand years old. Even if the former leader had really passed away, it didn't make sense to appoint someone so young as the new leader.
What was even stranger—all the Nagas in the temple were young.
Not a single familiar elder remained.
Where had the old Nagas gone?
Curtis answered respectfully, "The previous clan leader died of an illness."
Heloi's brows furrowed.
"An illness?" She frowned at Curtis. "And the other elders?"
"They died from the same illness."
Heloi pressed further. "What kind of disease could wipe out an entire generation of Nagas?"
Curtis's eyes flashed with a hint of impatience.
"I was still very young at the time," he replied. "I don't know the details, only that a plague swept through the clan. The leader and elders all perished, leaving only us, the young ones."
Heloi wasn't convinced.
His explanation was vague and unconvincing.
But since Curtis claimed ignorance, there was no way to press the matter further.
They exchanged a few more words, after which Curtis offered to let them stay at the Naga Temple.
But before Lin Fan could respond, Lilian rejected the offer on his behalf.
As their group left the temple, Lilian's expression remained tense.
Lin Fan noticed immediately.
"What's wrong?" he asked.
Lilian's voice was low and serious.
"The Black Maid was just in the Naga Temple."
Heloi walked up. "Yes, I sensed it too."
A chilling realization settled over them.
"If our guess is correct, the Black Maid is responsible for the elders' deaths."
Heloi's tone was calm, but Lin Fan knew her well enough—she was definitely struggling with this revelation.
She had finally returned to the Naga Temple… only to find it completely changed.
No one even recognized her as the Seventh Saintess anymore.
And yet, Cassiopeia had once been a legend among the Naga clan.
Lilian took a deep breath, her back to Heloi.
"She's my sister."
"I know."
"I'm sorry."
"There's no need…"
The air between them grew stiff, leaving Lin Fan at a loss for words.
Just as he was about to say something, a world announcement interrupted him.
"The portal between Twilight and Continent One has been opened."
"Who opened it? A large number of outsiders are coming through!"
"Hurry! Get to the portal—they're armed!"
Lin Fan opened the world chat—and suddenly noticed a new channel had appeared.
Its name: Twilight.
"...Wait a minute."
He quickly switched back to the main world chat. The normal chat was filled with messages from Blue Star residents.
Then he switched back to the Twilight channel.
Two completely different world chats.
"I actually have access to two world chats now?"
And, if his hunch was right—he was the only one from the main world who could access the Twilight chat.
He continued scrolling.
"Find out who opened the Twilight portal!"
"That portal has been sealed for ten thousand years! Who did this?"
"I found a name—Lin Fan! He has entered our world chat!"
"@Lin Fan — Wait, he actually exists?"
Lin Fan: ???
WTF?!
How did this even happen?!
I just wanted to keep a low profile!
