Chapter 122: A Parting Kiss
Lossiriel stood by the door, adjusting the silver clasp of her cloak. The light fabric shimmered like moonlight, draping elegantly over her white and silver attire. She glanced back at Aurion, who sat on the edge of her bed, looking unusually solemn.
"I won't be back for a few days," she said casually, brushing a loose strand of hair from her face. "Father always insists on a hunt when he returns from the Dwarf realms. It's his way of… settling back into things, I suppose."
Aurion nodded, his expression thoughtful. "Does he take everyone with him?"
"Usually." She shrugged. "Mother, Maeglin, and me. It's always the same—Father leads, Maeglin tries to impress him, Mother keeps to herself, and I… well, I just try to keep out of the way."
Aurion managed a small smile. "Sounds like quite the family outing."
Lossiriel smirked. "You could say that. It's more of a spectacle than anything else."
She stepped closer, her icy blue eyes softening. "You'll be fine here. Just… don't get caught, all right? I'd hate to come back and find Father's gone and flayed you alive."
Aurion chuckled nervously. "I'll do my best to avoid that."
There was a moment of silence between them, the air suddenly heavier. Lossiriel hesitated, then leaned in and pressed a soft kiss to his cheek.
Aurion froze, his breath catching in his throat. His mind raced, every coherent thought scattering as quickly as it had formed.
When she pulled back, she was smiling—a mischievous, knowing smile that made her look even more radiant. "You're hopeless," she teased, laughing as she saw the stunned expression on his face.
"I—uh—" Aurion stammered, his cheeks turning crimson.
Lossiriel laughed again, the sound light and carefree. "Goodbye, Aurion," she said, her voice warm. Then, with a graceful turn, she opened the door and slipped out, her footsteps fading into the distance.
Aurion sat there for a long moment, his hand brushing his cheek where her lips had touched. His heart raced, and a foolish grin spread across his face.
"Hopeless," he muttered to himself, echoing her words. But this time, he didn't mind.
