Chapter 11: Chapter 2: Beyond the Veil

As I lay on the cool, unforgiving ground, a chilling whisper of silence surrounded me like a suffocating blanket. Beside me, I could see Todoroki and Bakugo, their faces contorted in pain, the remnants of our last battle against the villain known as Curdler. It seemed like a lifetime ago—long before we were ever cursed, long before we understood what true despair felt like.

The poison coursing through our veins felt like molten lead, heavy and all-consuming. It threatened to pull us into an abyss from which we'd never return. As the seconds stretched like centuries, I focused on the two figures beside me. I could feel the weight of my regrets pressing down hard on my chest. Had I fought hard enough? Had I pushed my body to its limits for them, for us? As the agony ebbed and flowed, I silently begged for time to reverse.

Todoroki lay still, the shimmering essence of his powers muffled, extinguished by the brutal curse. I could see the determination in his eyes fading, replaced by a haunting emptiness. I had always viewed him as a pillar of strength, a beacon of fire and ice. In some small part of me, I had believed he would find a way out of any situation, just like he always had.

Beside him, Bakugo's fists, usually so filled with explosive power, now rested limply against the ground. I had witnessed his rage many times, but nothing could compare to the inferno flickering in his gaze just before the shadows closed in on us. If anyone could match Curdler's malevolence with fury, it was Bakugo. But now, all I could feel from him was desolation—anger turned inward, remorse mixed with despair.

Time slowed, and I wondered how things had come to this. We had faced villains before, each one with their own brand of terror, but none had prepared us for the existential weight we now bore. Suddenly, everything turned ethereal. The blaring sounds of battle, the cries for help, and even the sensation of pain seeped away.

I felt it first—a warmth gathering from an unknown source, soothing my anguish. My eyelids fluttered shut as darkness swallowed me whole, but unlike the coldness I expected, it was a blanket of calm. All my feelings of despair, anger, regret—everything I had held onto faded, and in its place emerged a blinding light.

I opened my eyes to find myself standing in an expanse so bright it hurt. I glanced around, bewildered. It was a realm untouched by suffering; a place where time bore no sway. I felt weightless, untethered from earthly bonds. The colors danced vibrantly, each more vivid than life itself. And yet, as magnificent as my surroundings were, a shadow loomed over my heart.

"Todoroki? Bakugo?" I called out, my voice echoing in this paradise. The fear ignited deep within me. Were they lost to me forever? Was this the afterlife I had never dared to envision?

A flicker of movement caught my eye. I turned and saw them materializing from the void, their forms glowing faintly. I couldn't suppress a wave of relief. We were together again, but the heaviness in our chests was still palpable.

"What the hell happened, Deku?" Bakugo's voice rang out with its usual fire, but his eyes spoke of sorrow and defeat. "We can't be done! Not like this!"

"I... I don't know, Kacchan," I stammered, unable to find the words. "It doesn't make sense! We were fighting, and then..." My voice began to crack. The reality of it all settled heavily on my shoulders.

"N-not like this," Todoroki echoed, his words laced with disbelief. "We were supposed to save people. We were supposed to become... heroes."

It was a heavy truth we grappled with. Each of us lay shattered by guilt—the weight of lives not saved, moments lost in time, and futures we would never witness. I had looked up to All Might, my idol and anchor—he who represented hope to me. And now, laid low by yet another villain, we were denied the very life we fought for.

But there was a strange peace in this luminous expanse, a sense of understanding. We were more than our struggles, more than the battles and curses that bound us.

All at once, it hit me—a realization like the flutter of wings. "What if this place isn't an end? What if it's just a new beginning?"

Bakugo scoffed, but there was a flicker of curiosity in his eyes. "What are you getting at, nerd?"

"Maybe we can be more than what we were. We can be a different kind of hero here," I proposed, a flicker of hope igniting deep within. "Together, maybe we can help others in ways we couldn't before."

As the light surrounded us, we stood resolute. In the tranquility of this ethereal realm, we could forge a new legacy. Together, we would rise, even beyond the veil of life.
