MFS:my familiar system

Chapter 2: A Pact in the Flames

Amidst the collapsed building, a faint pulse of red flickered from within Kyle's pajama pocket. The card, shrouded in shadowy hues, began to glow softly, its eerie radiance cutting through the surrounding darkness.

"HELLO?! HELLO?! CAN ANYONE HEAR ME?!"

Kyle's voice echoed into the void. He was floating in an endless abyss—an expanse of nothingness, filled only with silence and an overwhelming sense of emptiness.

"Is this hell? Am I dead? What's happening to me?"

His thoughts raced, desperately searching for any logical explanation.

Then, a voice emerged from the darkness.

"Nice to finally meet you, Kyle Corvayn."

Kyle's head snapped up. "Who's there?! How do you know my name?"

"I am what your kind calls a Boneclaw."

A shiver ran down Kyle's spine. "A Boneclaw…?" He had never heard that name before.

"Tell me, Kyle—would you like to form a contract?"

Kyle hesitated. "No."

"Why not?" The Boneclaw's voice carried an almost amused tone.

"Why now? After all these years—why now?!"

"Kyle… you are dead. The only way for me to reach you was through your death."

Kyle's breath caught. "Can I go back? To the physical world?"

"Yes, but without me… you will remain truly dead."

"So you're saying I need your help?"

"Exactly."

Kyle's fists clenched. "And what do you want in return?"

"Your life force. And to feed on your darkest desires."

Silence.

Kyle mulled over the words, weighing his choices. The alternative was absolute nothingness. Finally, he took a deep breath.

"...Fine. I accept."

As soon as he agreed, a screen appeared before him:

[Kyle Corvayn]

Do you accept this contract as a symbol of our connection?

[YES] | [NO]

Kyle reached out and tapped [YES].

[Congratulations.]

[You are now the host of the Boneclaw.]

Awakening

In the physical realm, Kyle's unconscious body hovered above the ground. The card, now glowing ominously, floated before his face before surging toward him.

It slammed into his forehead.

A searing pain erupted in his skull, forcing a scream from his throat. Every nerve in his body felt like it was burning, twisting, reshaping.

Then—silence.

Slowly, Kyle's eyes fluttered open. His head pounded, and his muscles ached. He forced himself upright, bracing for pain—but to his shock, he felt no injuries.

A notification sound rang in his ears.

Kyle instinctively checked his pockets for his phone, but there was nothing.

Then, a translucent screen materialized before his eyes.

---

Before he could fully process the screen, another appeared.

Confused, Kyle frowned. "Why are all these stats hidden…?"

He shook his head. "Let's see where this takes me."

Scrolling through the menus, he noticed a [Shop] tab.

[Unlocks at Level 15]

And finally, a [Quest] tab.

---

[Quest: Recover the remnants of your belongings]

[Reward: 10 EXP]

---

Kyle closed the interface with a thought, startled at how naturally it responded.

Then, a realization hit him.

The card his parents left him—it was an old card.

Why him? Why had it chosen now?

Unlike the ones advertised by the army and corporate summoning agencies, Kyle had never seen a contract card in real life. Only the wealthy could afford them.

Ordinary cards didn't contain familiars. They were merely conduits, a medium for humans to form a bond with compatible creatures from another plane. The more expensive the card, the more powerful the familiar it could summon.

But Kyle's card…

It had bound him to something completely unknown.

Boneclaws weren't even supposed to exist.

If he had to guess, it had to be at least [Apex Tier].

---

The Familiar Tier System

1. Ember Tier – The most common familiars.

2. Veil Tier – Specialized familiars with unique abilities.

3. Dominion Tier – Rarer, battle-influencing familiars.

4. Apex Tier – Legendary creatures of historical significance.

5. Ascendant Tier – Mythical beings that surpass legends.

---

Kyle exhaled and turned to search for his belongings under the rubble. Tossing aside burned scraps of fabric and shattered wood, his fingers brushed against something solid.

A folded piece of paper.

His chest tightened as he recognized it immediately.

"...The letter."

He had received it years ago, but he had never been able to open it. The seal refused to break—until now.

As he lifted it, glowing red letters formed across the front.

[To be opened upon turning 18.]

Kyle's breath caught. Today was his 18th birthday.

Hands trembling, he pressed his thumb against the seal. A single drop of blood seeped into the paper, and with a soft shimmer, the letter unfolded itself.

---

A Message from the Past

To our dearest Kyle,

If you're reading this, then fate has taken us away before we could see you grow into the man we know you'll become. We wish we could be there to guide you, to protect you—but the world is not kind, and war does not wait for love.

Inside this box, you will find something precious: a card unlike any other. It is a burden, a secret, and, if you are strong enough, your greatest weapon.

We could never tell you the truth before—we didn't have time. This card is not like the others people use to summon familiars. It does not obey the same rules. It does not bond to the living… unless the living have already touched death.

We don't know how it will respond to you, or if it ever will. But if there comes a day when everything is taken from you, when you feel like there is nothing left—hold onto this card. Do not discard it. Do not fear it.

It will change everything.

We love you, son. Always.

—Mother & Father

---

Tears welled in Kyle's eyes as he clutched the letter.

Before he could fully process everything, a distant sound reached his ears.

Marching footsteps.

A voice rang out.

"KYLE CORVAYN!"

Kyle turned. Emerging through the smoke, a squad of soldiers stood before him.

They had come to take him away.
