Chapter 11: Meeting the Parents
Saki's heart pounded in her chest as she and Kai approached her parents' house. She hadn't seen them since starting her university life, and the thought of introducing Kai, a man significantly older, sent a shiver of apprehension down her spine. Yet, intertwined with the nerves was a thrill of excitement. She was eager for her parents to witness the happiness Kai brought into her life.
Kai, sensing her unease, gently squeezed her hand. His touch, firm and reassuring, sent a wave of calm through her. "Ready?" he asked, his voice a low rumble that vibrated through her.
Saki nodded, a small smile gracing her lips. "Ready as I'll ever be."
They walked up the paved pathway, the familiar scent of her mother's roses filling the air. As Saki reached for the doorbell, the door swung open, revealing her mother, Mrs. Sato, a woman with kind eyes and a warm smile that could melt glaciers.
"Saki!" Mrs. Sato exclaimed, her face lighting up. "Oh, my dear, it's so good to see you!"
Saki stepped forward, embracing her mother tightly. "It's good to be home, Mom."
Mrs. Sato pulled back, her eyes widening as she noticed Kai standing behind Saki. "And who is this handsome young man?" she asked, her gaze lingering on Kai's tall, muscular frame.
"Mom, this is Kai," Saki introduced, her cheeks flushing slightly. "Kai, this is my mother."
Kai extended his hand, a polite smile gracing his lips. "It's a pleasure to meet you, Mrs. Sato."
Mrs. Sato's hand disappeared into Kai's larger one, her touch lingering longer than necessary. "The pleasure is all mine," she replied, her voice a touch breathless. "Please, come in, both of you."
As they stepped into the house, Saki noticed her father, Mr. Sato, emerge from the living room. He was a man of few words, but his gruff exterior hid a heart of gold.
"Dad!" Saki greeted, rushing towards him for a hug.
Mr. Sato patted her back awkwardly. "Welcome home, Saki." His eyes then shifted to Kai, a flicker of curiosity in their depths.
"Dad, this is Kai," Saki repeated the introduction.
Kai bowed his head respectfully. "Mr. Sato."
Mr. Sato studied Kai for a moment, his expression unreadable. "Welcome to our home," he finally grunted.
Saki led Kai to the living room, where her parents had already prepared tea and snacks. As they settled on the plush sofa, Saki felt a knot of tension tighten in her stomach. She watched her parents closely, trying to gauge their reactions to Kai.
Mrs. Sato, however, seemed completely enamored with Kai. Her eyes followed his every move, her smile widening whenever he spoke. She offered him more tea, more snacks, and inquired about his life with an enthusiasm that bordered on flirtatious. Saki couldn't help but notice the way her mother's gaze lingered on Kai's broad shoulders and strong hands.
Mr. Sato, on the other hand, remained stoic. He observed Kai with a quiet intensity, his expression betraying nothing. Saki knew her father was a good judge of character, and she hoped Kai would pass his scrutiny.
The conversation flowed easily, with Kai effortlessly navigating the questions about his background and profession. He spoke with confidence and humility, his words carefully chosen to impress without boasting. Saki watched him with a sense of pride, her heart swelling with love for this extraordinary man.
As the evening progressed, Saki noticed her father's demeanor soften slightly. He even cracked a few jokes, his deep laughter filling the room. Saki breathed a sigh of relief. It seemed Kai was winning her father over.
When it was time to leave, Mrs. Sato insisted on hugging Kai goodbye. "It was lovely meeting you, Kai," she said, her voice soft and warm. "Please come visit again soon."
Kai returned the hug, his hand lingering on her back for a moment. "Thank you, Mrs. Sato. I enjoyed meeting you both."
As they walked back to Kai's car, Saki couldn't contain her excitement. "I think they liked you!" she exclaimed, her voice filled with joy.
Kai chuckled, his eyes twinkling in the moonlight. "I'm glad. Your parents seem like wonderful people."
Saki leaned against him, her head resting on his chest. "They are," she agreed. "And I'm so happy you met them."
Kai wrapped his arms around her, pulling her closer. "Me too," he murmured, his lips brushing against her hair. "Me too."
As they drove away, Saki glanced back at her parents' house, a warm feeling spreading through her. She knew this was just the beginning of a beautiful journey, a journey she would share with Kai and the people she loved most.
However, a flicker of unease remained. Her mother's blatant admiration for Kai was unsettling. Saki pushed the thought aside, attributing it to her mother's naturally friendly and welcoming nature. Yet, the image of her mother's lingering touch on Kai's arm and the warmth in her eyes remained imprinted in Saki's mind.
The drive back to Kai's apartment was filled with comfortable silence, punctuated by Saki's occasional giggles as she recalled her father's awkward attempts at humor. She nestled against Kai, inhaling his familiar scent of sandalwood and leather, a scent that had quickly become synonymous with safety and comfort. The warmth of his body radiating against hers chased away the lingering chill of the December air.
As they neared Kai's apartment building, Saki's laughter subsided, replaced by a pensive silence. She stared out the window, the city lights blurring into streaks of color as a multitude of thoughts swirled in her mind. Her mother's intense gaze on Kai, the lingering touch, the breathless tone... Had she been imagining things? Was it just her mother's usual exuberance? Or was there something more, something subtly suggestive beneath the surface?
Saki shifted in her seat, the leather squeaking beneath her. She couldn't shake off the image of her mother's hand on Kai's arm, the way her fingers seemed to caress his skin. A wave of heat crept up her neck, an uncomfortable mix of confusion and possessiveness. She loved her mother dearly, but the thought of her harboring any sort of attraction towards Kai, her Kai, was unsettling.
"Penny for your thoughts?" Kai's voice broke through her reverie, his tone laced with concern. He had parked the car and turned towards her, his hand reaching out to gently caress her cheek.
Saki blinked, startled by his touch. She hadn't realized how deeply she had been lost in her thoughts. "Oh, it's nothing," she replied, forcing a smile. "Just thinking about how much fun it was to see my parents again."
Kai's brow furrowed slightly, his perceptive gaze lingering on her face. He knew her too well to be fooled by her flimsy excuse. "Saki," he said softly, his thumb stroking her cheekbone. "You know you can tell me anything. What's bothering you?"
Saki hesitated, unsure how to articulate the strange mix of emotions swirling within her. She didn't want to sound paranoid or jealous, but she also couldn't ignore the nagging feeling that something wasn't quite right.
"It's just..." she began, her voice barely above a whisper. "My mother... she seemed a little too interested in you."
Kai's eyebrows shot up in surprise. "Interested in me? How do you mean?"
Saki took a deep breath, trying to find the right words. "She was very attentive, very... touchy-feely. And she kept staring at you."
Kai chuckled, a deep rumble that vibrated through her. "Well, I can't blame her. You have a beautiful mother."
Saki's heart skipped a beat at his compliment, but the underlying anxiety remained. "I know, but it was more than that. It felt... flirtatious."
Kai's smile faded, replaced by a look of concern. He reached out to cup her face in his hands, his thumbs gently wiping away a stray tear that she hadn't even realized had escaped. "Saki, are you jealous?" he asked, his voice laced with amusement.
Saki blushed, her cheeks burning with shame. "No!" she denied, a little too quickly. "Of course not. It's just... weird."
Kai's lips curved into a tender smile. "It's okay to be jealous, sweetheart. It means you care."
Saki looked at him, her eyes wide with surprise. "You're not upset?"
Kai shook his head, his gaze filled with love and reassurance. "Not at all. In fact, I find it rather endearing." He leaned in, his lips brushing against her forehead. "But I can assure you, your mother's attention was purely out of admiration for the man who makes her daughter happy. There's nothing to worry about."
Saki sighed, the tension in her shoulders easing slightly. She wanted to believe him, she truly did. But the seed of doubt had been planted, and it would take more than words to completely eradicate it.
"Okay," she whispered, leaning into his touch. "I trust you."
Kai smiled, his eyes filled with warmth. "That's all that matters." He kissed her softly, his lips lingering on hers for a moment. "Now, let's go inside. It's freezing out here."
As they stepped out of the car and into the warmth of the apartment building, Saki couldn't help but feel a sense of foreboding. She knew her mother's attraction to Kai, however harmless it might seem now, had the potential to complicate their lives. She just hoped she was wrong.
