'I can't think of anything.'
"Player Kim Su-Hyeon"
10 years. During those long 10 years, I've achieved the thing I've been yearning and dreaming about. But, it still doesn't disappear. The sense of loss and cold pain that filled me right now was still tormenting me.
"Player Kim Su-Hyeon. May I ask you something again?"
A soft but beautiful voice whispered into my ear. I was drawn to the sound and slowly raised my head. As I raised my head, I was greeted with a floor made of gray bricks. Then, as soon as I had 30 pyeong of space in my field of vision, my trailing gaze stopped.
Note:- One pyeong is equivalent to approximately 3.31 square meters or 35.58 square feet.
The room of summoning that announces the beginning of everything and the end of everything. And on the rectangular altar in the center of the room, a being with white wings that shined brightly stood. I felt empty and fixed my gaze on the angel at the altar.
"I will confirm player Kim Su-Hyeon's request again. Do you really wish to rewind time to when you first started as a player?"
"I do."
I slowly nodded and stared at the angel that was in front of my eyes. A beautiful appearance that can be called the pinnacle of beauty, smooth skin that doesn't show a single spot, and clothes that were slightly risque, revealing only a bit of what was underneath. The angel was really beautiful. All of that was only looking at me.
But I don't have any desires. The beautiful appearance of an angel and the affectionate gaze. Nothing could shake my already dead heart. I had completely lost my emotions after 'that day'.
"We can't understand it at all. All angels, including me, cannot understand you." the angle on the altar said.
"No, you're wrong. I don't want your understanding. Seraph."
The voice I hear in my ear is so cold. The voice of the angel, the seraph, is trembling thinly, unlike usual. I don't remember ever seeing the seraph disturbed even once, except for today. Does that mean what I just said is that shocking?
Although she appeared to be agitated for a moment, Seraph immediately regained her expressionless impression. And then she began to calmly yell at me in a polite, soft voice.
"Player Kim Soo-hyun, you have completed all the missions in the Hall plain and are the first player to achieve the pinnacle."
"However."
"However, it's not just that. You have obtained the Zero Code that you so desired. You have 'qualifications.' Within the bounds allowed by these 'qualifications,' you can achieve anything you want."
"Seraph. The discussion is already over."
"You want to return to Earth? Very well. You can return to Earth while maintaining your current abilities. Staying in the Hall plain? That's fine too. With the Zero Code, you could become a king ruling all continents, or even something more."
"I don't think it will stop at all," I sighed and rested my right hand on my waist. The handle of the sword in my grasp felt familiar.
"10 years was enough time for me to gain the resolve to have this conversation. Seraph, I'm tired. I won't say anything else. No matter what you say to persuade me. I will use Zero Code."
Grasping the sphere-like object, I felt power starting to course through me. Noticing the rising energy from my entire body, Seraph briefly closed her mouth. But it was only for a moment. Soon, her face showed a look of pity as she looked at me. It seemed she wasn't ready to give up on persuasion yet.
"The ownership of Zero Code has already been given to Player Kim Su-Hyeon. We do not have any more rights to temper nor touch it. That's why I find it a waste. To use such an extraordinary power merely to turn back time is absurd."
"…"
"This is the final confirmation. Player Kim Su-Hyeon, do you really want to repeat those 10 years of torture?"
The tone of Seraph's words had now almost turned to pleading. Suddenly, I started to laugh for no reason at all. It was, quite literally, a laugh without reason. My laughter filled the silent room.
This place isn't Earth. This is another world called 'The Hall Plain' where life is completely different from the everyday life modern people enjoy. I gently closed my eyes as I reminisced my memory of the things that I had been through.
The first time I entered Hall plain was ten years ago when I was 23, with a bright future ahead of me. My last memory on Earth was simply the pleasant feeling of returning home after completing two years of military service.
While on my way home after reporting my discharge, I fell asleep on the train, and when I regained consciousness, I was immediately summoned to this place, the 'Summoning Room.' And before me stood an angel with white wings fluttering, something that only existed in a fantasy world.
Note: If you didn't know, all males are required to serve in the military between the age of 18-28 in South Korea (Optional for females).
It was a situation where I knew nothing and could understand nothing. For me, who was filled with dreams of finally returning home, it was nothing short of a lightning shock.
It was neither a dream nor my imagination. When I finally accepted it as reality, I begged the angel to send me back. But the next place I was moved to was a place to prove the Player's qualifications, called ' rite of passage'. There, I was chased by monsters I had never seen before and was forced to take a test.
The specified test period is 7 days. It was a battlefield solely for survival. In the face of countless threats to life, it was only after barely holding on for a week that I was able to qualify as a ' Player (Player) ' to enter the world of 'the hall plain '.
However, the rite of passage was not the end. Hall Plain was the real beginning. If the rite of passage was a seven-day war of survival, The Hall plain was an unbound hell with no idea when one would die.
And life in Hall Plain began.
I just wanted to live. Because I wanted to live, I desperately adapted to the unreasonable world of Hall Plain. I put all my hope in the angel's words that I could return when I reached the end, and I was active for as little as 10 years. Yeah, I just wanted to live and go back. I can't just leave the relationships that I've built up back at home.
"Player Kim Su-Hyeon, what are you thinking about?…"
The moment I thought about 'relationship', a very familiar emotion arose in my heart. I shook my head fiercely. Because what was important now was not being lost in flashback. "I was just reminiscing over some old memories. Seeing as you asked me for confirmation must mean that you have at least a little bit of conscience, right?"
"…"
"Right. Thanks to you all,I experienced pain that I didn't even need to go through. and that too for 10 years."
"Player Kim Su-Hyeon."
I was looking at Seraph, trying to figure out what she was going to say next, and saw Seraph's hard gaze on me. The moment I was going to ask her to stop, her soft luscious lips parted and let out a soft sounding voice.
"If you're thinking about players Kim Yu-Hyeon and Han So-young, then I think I know what you want. Player Kim Su-Hyeun, I have a very reasonable idea. Currently, the GP you own is enough for you to 'wish' many times. Even if you don't use Zero Code to go back, you can still bring them back…"
'I hate to admit it, but she was right.'
I somehow knew those words would come out. Before Seraph could finish speaking, I pulled my sword from its sheath and swung it with all my might.
"Dingg."
An ear puncturing sound resounded in the room. The wave that I had produced shook the altar where Seraph had been sitting, but that was it. The wave disappeared without even leaving a scratch on the white shield that had been put up by Seraph.
"Player Kim Su-Hyeon...., I understand how you feel, but it is useless. I think you probably know even without me telling you."
I knew. Players could never hurt an angel. Nevertheless, the sword that I was still wielding is just showing off my resolve to not change my will.
"… That's right. Before Astaroth died, he said that angels and demons are not that different."
"Are you saying that you'd believe the word of a demon? You of all people?"
"That's the truth. This can't be done, that can't be done. In the end, the conclusion Is that there is no difference."
"Wait, hold on, Let's have a conversation.… I think I've already explained enough about the requirements."
"You say it is not acceptable because I'm not qualified. They say it is not possible because I don't have the qualifications. So I even said that I'd go back in time to meet your qualifications. But What is with all the complaints?"
"Su-Hyeon!"
"Ding! Dingg"
"Don't yell. I don't want to go deaf. And address the player by their surname. Just like you always did." The wave was unleashed one after another only to fade away. Seraph was staring at me with a sad expression. I gripped my sword that was aimed at Seraph, emitting a faint glow. Then, as I put in more magic power, the aura around the sword began to become bigger and bigger. Seraph looked at the sword and bit her lips.
"I'll give you one final warning. Get rid of your sword right now. If you think you can kill a creature from a different dimension, then you're making a grave mistake."
"Is that so? Then should I really try to kill you? It isn't that hard. All I have to do is make use of Zero Code to kill you angels."
"… It's true that you have the right to use Zero Code. However, the activation of Zero Code would happen through angels."
"You're the one who'll activate it? Isn't there any other way?"
"Sigh… Player Kim Su-Hyeon, this is a meaningless argument."
Seraph's mouth was twitching a lot as if she had more to say. But, Seraph might've felt how angry I was or maybe the rising aura around my sword, and just bit her lips slightly.
"…"
"…"
Heavy silence filled the room for a while. I slowly retracted the aura and lowered my sword. In a solemn mood, I started to give my attention to Zero Code that I was holding with my left hand. It was a round, deep blue object with a marble-like texture.
"…Seraph, I don't want to fight anymore. Nor do I want to continue arguing with you. If you truly understand how I am feeling, and if you really do care for me. Then please just grant my wish."
Seraph, whose eyes were filled with remorse a moment ago, went wide with surprise. I showed Zero Code towards her direction, making her look at it. Showing that I have made a very clear decision.
"I'll ask you once again. I want to turn back time, back to 10 years ago. Back to the day when I first came here."
I don't know if Zero Code heard my resolve. But at that moment, Zero Code, which had been glowing slightly the whole time, started to shine brightly. I slowly loosened the hand that was gripping the Zero Code tightly.
The Sphere that was shining brightly started to float upwards and flew to the altar where Seraph was at.
She took Zero Code with a blank expression. I was staring at Seraph as she returned the empty stare that I had been giving. How long are we going to stare at each other like this? Suddenly, her lips parted slowly, so slow that even a snail was faster.
"If this is really your will."
"…"
"Then I will respect it."
"Seraph."
Seraph was speaking with a sad expression as she was looking at me.
"Please do not misunderstand and listen to me, Player Kim Su-Hyeon. As I have said before, Player Kim Su-Hyeon currently has a lot of GP. It doesn't make sense for you to expunge it like this."
I shook my head.
'I'm going back in time anyways… How would my GP(Gold Points) help me now?'
But Seraph had a different idea. She was waving her hand around, as if she was manipulating something.
"Unbelievable… Zero Code is responding to your will. With my authority as an assistant, I'll be altering the rules a little and give you a few privileges for restarting. Of course, player Kim Su-Hyeon won't be affected in any bad ways. I will see you soon after the work is done."
Work is done? See you soon? I was just about to ask what the hell she was talking about. But I got cut off as the summoning room was filled with a foreign voice that I had never heard before.
"Request from Player Kim Su-Hyeon has been received. 27%. 58%. 77%. 100%. Loading… Authorization completed. Access granted. Executing Code Name: 'Zero'."
At that moment, a sound similar to a rusty machine was whirring somewhere. At the same time, Zero Code that was in Seraph's hands was producing numerous strands of light that scattered throughout the room.
"Pash!"
A light that was bright enough to blind someone filled the entire room. The whirring of a rusty machine was still heard, and strange sensations that could not be described quickly filled my entire body. It was, however, familiar. It was like the sensation of passing through something very quickly. It was similar to the sensation of the world being warped and distorted when the Grand Duke of Hell appeared in the previous battle of Atlanta.
As time passed, the light started to grow stronger and stronger, until Seraph could not be seen anymore. Eventually, I had to close my eyes tightly, resigning myself to whatever might happen.
