Chapter 22: Helicarrier Down - A Race Against Time

The world was falling apart. Or rather, S.H.I.E.L.D. was. Adam watched the live feeds from their hidden base, the chaos unfolding across Washington D.C. Fury's 'death,' the reveal of Project Insight, and the three Helicarriers turning on each other. It was a symphony of destruction, exactly as he remembered it, but infinitely more terrifying when it was real.

"Fitz, Simmons, status report! Are you two clear of the Triskelion?" Adam barked into their comms, his voice tight with urgency. He knew they were safe, canonically, but knowing wasn't the same as seeing.

"We're… we're in the sub-levels, Adam! The entire building is collapsing around us!" Fitz's voice was strained, filled with panic. "Hydra agents everywhere! And the structural integrity is failing!"

"We're trying to find a secure exit, Adam! But the schematics are changing too rapidly!" Simmons added, her voice breathless.

"Yelena, you're up! Get in there! Get them out! Non-lethal, Blondie! Just get them to the rendezvous point!" Adam commanded, his eyes glued to the internal schematics of the Triskelion, trying to pinpoint their exact location.

"On it. Tell Fitz not to trip," Yelena's voice crackled, already a golden blur streaking across the country, her Light-Light Fruit pushing her to impossible speeds.

[SYSTEM MESSAGE: THREAT LEVEL: CRITICAL. ENVIRONMENT 'TRISKELION' COMPROMISED. TEAM MEMBERS 'LEO FITZ' AND 'JEMMA SIMMONS' IN IMMEDIATE DANGER. 'YELENA BELOVA' ENGAGED IN RESCUE PROTOCOL. ADAPTIVE BODY READY FOR SUPPORT.]

Adam felt the Helicarriers begin their descent, the ground trembling even in their remote base. He knew the chaos unfolding on them, the desperate fight Captain America and his allies were waging. He had to trust that they would handle their part. His job was to ensure his team survived.

Yelena burst into the Triskelion's sub-levels, a flash of golden light. She moved through the crumbling corridors like a phantom, bypassing debris, neutralizing Hydra agents with blinding speed. She found Fitz and Simmons trapped in a rapidly collapsing corridor, a massive support beam about to give way.

"Fitz! Simmons! Move!" Yelena yelled, her voice cutting through the din. She grabbed them, one in each arm, and with a burst of light-speed, pulled them clear just as the beam crashed down, sealing off their previous path.

"Yelena! Thank goodness!" Simmons gasped, clinging to her.

"You're… you're so fast!" Fitz stammered, his eyes wide.

"Yeah, yeah, save the compliments for later. We've got bigger problems. Like, you know, the building trying to eat us," Yelena retorted, already zipping them through another collapsing section, her Light-Light Fruit creating temporary light constructs to deflect falling debris.

They encountered a squad of Hydra agents, led by a particularly nasty operative. The agents opened fire. Yelena, moving with impossible speed, disarmed them in a blink, then used her light powers to create a blinding flash, disorienting them. Fitz, despite the chaos, instinctively created a small, precise "Room" around the operative's head, containing his shouts, effectively silencing him.

"Nice, Fitz! Head in a box! Very subtle!" Yelena quipped, as Simmons rushed forward, her Heal-Heal Fruit glowing, to administer a quick, non-lethal sedative to the dazed agents.

"The spatial parameters were… challenging! But effective!" Fitz replied, a nervous laugh escaping him.

They continued their frantic escape, navigating the collapsing building, bypassing Hydra patrols, Yelena's speed and the combined ingenuity of Fitz and Simmons proving invaluable. Adam, monitoring their progress, provided real-time updates on structural weaknesses, Hydra movements, and optimal escape routes, his meta-knowledge and adaptable body constantly feeding him information.

Meanwhile, above ground, the Helicarriers were crashing. Adam watched the feeds, a grim satisfaction in his heart as he saw Cap and Sam fighting, Natasha exposing Hydra's secrets. He saw the Winter Soldier, a blur of deadly efficiency, engaging Cap. He knew what had to happen. He knew the sacrifices. But he also knew his team was safe. That was his priority.

They finally burst out into the chaotic streets of D.C., blending into the panicked crowds, just as the last Helicarrier plummeted into the Potomac River. The air was filled with smoke, dust, and the screams of civilians. Yelena led Fitz and Simmons to their pre-arranged rendezvous point, a discreet, armored van Adam had prepared.

"Everyone in! Now!" Adam's voice came over the comms, a wave of relief washing over him.

Inside the van, Fitz and Simmons collapsed, breathless but safe. Yelena, leaning against the wall, looked at Adam through the comms. "They're safe. And they're traumatized. You owe me a very large, very expensive meal, Adam."

"Consider it done, Blondie. And a lifetime supply of coffee for Fitz. And a very large, very sturdy plant for Simmons. You guys did good. All of you." Adam's voice was filled with a genuine pride.

The Adapt-Alliance had survived the fall of S.H.I.E.L.D. They were bruised, shaken, but intact. And now, they were truly free. Free to operate in the shadows, unburdened by S.H.I.E.L.D.'s rules, dedicated to their own mission. The world had changed. And so had they.
