-Prologue-
Hi, hello!
My name is Mayu Ryomen, I'm 27 years old and I moved here to Tokyo about eight months ago from the handsome port city of Shimoda.
Before I began my adventure at the Tokyo Academy of Jujutsu four months ago, I was nothing more than a medical assistant in a trauma surgery practice, but after that I was drawn into a world that I was unknowingly born into.
How did that happen?
I would say with more bad luck than good!
Like every evening during the week, I was on my way home after successfully completing my work.
I was wandering through the brightly lit streets of Tokyo, as I had always done for the past few months, and for once I decided to take a different route on the evening in question. I was particularly keen to explore and wanted to discover new, unknown places here and there, which I was now able to call home.
As it turned out afterwards, this was - how could it have been otherwise - wrong.
I ended up walking past a large sports field that didn't necessarily benefit from large-scale lighting, which immediately gave me the jitters.
So far so good, but had you heard of jujutsu, curse spirits, curse powers and curse energy?
No? Then there were already two of us indirectly.
Up until this point, I had no idea what these terms meant, but I was not unfamiliar with curse spirits or even just curses. I had been able to see them all my life, but had no other name for them than monsters or evil spirits.
Just such a creature, as I found out later, belonged to the 2nd rank - more on that later, had set its sights on me without further ado.
As I had just mentioned, I wasn't aware that you could, let alone should, fight them with curse powers. Yes, that's how I had looked.
And how was I supposed to do that?
My first and only plan was to run or hide. The other way round would have been smarter, of course, but panicking, I stupidly tried both, because these creatures didn't look pretty or cute at all. Especially when they were rushing towards you, leering like that bastard, and you weren't expecting to bump into them.
Unfortunately, I was also alone.
So I was defenceless and in great danger - or so I was told.
Apart from that, who could have protected me from it?
If a miracle hadn't happened, I certainly wouldn't be standing here in front of you, telling you about my story, which you could accompany me on if you felt like it.
Unexpectedly and not really expecting it, two of these Jujuzists came by chance to this devastating place and skillfully stepped in to help.
Even though I hadn't believed in God before, I thanked him at that moment that he had spared me.
My supernatural saviors went by the names of Megumi Fushiguro - a 15-year-old 2nd rank jujuzist and his companion, as I learned, also his teacher, Satoru Gojo - a 28-year-old special rank jujuzist.
These were sometimes the first people I had met in my life who were familiar with this abnormal and surreal world of curses and magic.
Fortunately, once I knew I was safe, we naturally struck up a conversation.
We made an appointment for the following day to let this incident sink in and to let the night pass so that we could talk about our explanations and impressions.
So after I had finished work again, we retired to a quiet corner of the café we had agreed on and I was given a more detailed explanation of what this peculiarity actually was.
As already mentioned, I was unknowingly born into this abnormal world. The only curse power I possessed was that I could see curses.
But exorcizing them with any kind of curse techniques or curse energies? Not a chance.
I just vaguely mentioned that there were different ranks and I would like to go into these in more detail.
The fun started at the 4th rank, which was practically at the bottom in front of the ladder - where I initially thought I would be. You climbed up ranks 3-1 the stronger and more skillful you were with your escape technique and escape power, as well as the more blessed you were with your escape energy.
Once you reached the top, you reached the special rank.
Special ranks were logically blessed with immense curse power as well as curse energy, which they had therefore also mastered.
Curses as well as Jujuzists. To put it in my words, the elite among us.
Non-Jujuzists, also known as normalos, were also able to see special-rank curses without any aids, which was sometimes due to their enormous presence.
To cut a long story short, we decided that I should pursue my new path as a Jujuzist and that's what I wanted to do - at least at that point. I still didn't fully realize what I had actually done to myself.
So we organized at a gallop for me to give up my recently started job as a doctor's assistant, give notice on my apartment and make a very quick move after I passed the entrance exam to the academy.
So, what did the entrance exam mean? Everything else was tested except whether I was truly qualified, but I'll tell you more about that later.
To be honest with you - I would never have dreamed of living under the same roof as three guys who were quite strangers to me.
Because the third in the group was the 1st rank jujuzist Kento Nanami, who at 27 was the same age as me.
That was pretty crazy when I thought about it myself, but I had to openly admit that I felt incredibly comfortable. I was warmly welcomed and accepted.
I had to warm Kento up a bit at the beginning and break the ice, but we quickly bonded over something we both loved and occasionally did together. And when he occasionally took me with him on his missions, which he was allowed to do on his own, he explained a lot about the residuals of the curse spirits to me. An exciting topic, I thought.
And with Megumi, who had known me from the very first second anyway? Even though he was only a tender 15 and seemed to be in his hottest teenage phase, he was extremely mature and grown-up for his age, which admittedly almost always made me forget that he was almost half my age. A big little brother, as I affectionately called him. I was also allowed to attach myself to block on his assignments and get to know the subject of curses better.
And Satoru? He was quickly glued to my cheek. Or vice versa.
Yes, I really meant that.
He had been given the amusing task of training me, the incompetent. And he did! Much to my chagrin and almost every day - when he wasn't being sent on missions.
I was aware from the start that this wasn't going to be a walk in the park and sitting on my ass, but this? It was more like torture than trying to conjure up any techniques or the like in me.
Admittedly, it sounded hard and not really fun, which it was, but we had certainly had our fun. Because there was nothing more important than injecting an exaggerated amount of humor into seriousness.
And apart from that, I simply had to count myself among the other girls who had fallen in love with this charming, extremely attractive man.
Anyway, I had to get back to my beloved training session in a few minutes. So if you want to know more about yours truly and my story, grab your chocolate, popcorn or potato chips and don't choke on your drink while the drama mercilessly descended on me.
I got ready by quickly slipping into my dark blue uniform trousers and pulling on a black T-shirt. I braided my waist-length lilac hair into a plait and took one last look at my watch.
"Special rank girls, training is calling!" Satoru was already shouting outside my room door, whereupon I snorted out my breath in disdain and rolled my ultraviolet eyes before opening them in surprise.
Oh, I'd forgotten another explanation for you.
Yes, you heard me right.
My assigned position was at the special rank. The elite I had named.
Why I, of all people, who really couldn't do anything, was given this title, I still don't know. But maybe soon? I sincerely hoped so, because as you could probably guess, I was anything but happy to be in this position.
Do you fancy coming with me?
See you soon then.
Mayu.
