Chapter 15: 15
Damien
It was finally the big day. The entire manor was bubbly as maids moved around to put the finishing touches for the coronation after-party. I sat alone, in my secret spot on the roof, and looked at the world below me.
"Have you seen the Alpha?" The guards asked below. They were looking for me but I didn't care.
My mind was not in the right state.
"Not a scent, I will check in his room and other spots. The Lord George says that his son must be found before the guests start arriving." The other guard said right below me in the garden.
They moved and continued their search.
A bottle of expensive whiskey stood at my side, I was careful not to get drunk, taking only small quantities of it.
This space was what I needed, to be able to think of a way not to reject Arielle.
I agonized about it, seeing it in different ways but nothing came up. I couldn't classify the feelings I had for her, it was too confusing for me.
Whenever I thought about her, my heartbeat was in my stomach. I even started looking out for her in the corridor when I walked, which was annoying.
I hated her! Why did I still care? I felt nothing for her!
'...Then why do you find it difficult to reject her, if you do not have any feelings for her?' my wolf spoke.
"You are supposed to help me here!" I battled internally with him.
'...And I'm doing that. I just want you to make your feelings crystal clear... answer the question, why do you find it so hard to reject her when you do not have any feelings for her?'
I couldn't come up with an answer, I knew I had no comeback for this question.
'That's right... think about it... because as for me, I need her. I have waited too long.'
The determination in his voice, irritated me and somehow, it was the push I needed. I had to prove to him and myself that I was in control
"I will reject her. Nothing will change my mind. Not even you!" I jumped back inside the building through a window and went to my room.
As soon as I got inside, I met face to face with my father.
"Where have you been? We have been looking for you! You are not a child. You need to be accountable and that includes making appearances!" He growled.
My eyes narrowed at his tone but I ignored him.
"Aren't you going to say something?"
"I am the new alpha. Maybe with you, I'm your son but to everyone, I'm the fucking alpha and I demand respect. I do not owe you an explanation each time I step out of my room!" I raised my head to stare down at him.
The guards around him looked confused.
He slowly nodded at me. "I see."
I turned to go and then I remembered. "And about Arielle—" I nodded several times. "I know why you are worried. It's none of your business, I know what to do. You don't have to constantly whine about that."
His mouth dropped open, and I walked past him without a word.
I got into my ceremonial attire and got to the hall with the help of the guards. There was a large turnout of people, the hall was packed.
Father stood beside the VIPs and his eyes were on me. I knew he was anticipating the rejection.
The host cleared his throat. "And now, we shall begin—"
A loud crash and cry suddenly broke from the crowd.
My eyes darted there, as people slowly looked back and separated, to reveal Arielle on the floor. She was being kicked down by Bailey.
My wolf growled but I steeled myself. This was a big stage; I couldn't afford to lose myself now.
"Stay Calm," I ordered my wolf.
"You are so fucking clumsy, get up! Get up, wench!" She poured food on Arielle as she got up and a section of the crowd was started to chant.
"Witch! Witch!"
"She's a pain in the ass, she wants to interfere with the ceremony! Who even brought her here?"
"The daughter of a wizard is also a witch; she doesn't deserve to live!" Other maids joined in the insult.
"I'm so sorry, I will take care of this." Arielle slowly stood up, but a hard slap from Bailey landed on her face and she fell on the floor. Again.
Cheers erupted from the masses. It was as if they had forgotten about the ceremony.
My fingers clenched but I controlled myself as I watched the scene.
Why did I care? She was being clumsy, not my business.
My eyes met with my father, and I narrowed them at him.
Slowly, everyone fell silent, and they directed their attention towards me, waiting for my verdict. It was a standstill, I had to be careful with what I said but before I could speak, Father suddenly stood up which attracted attention.
He walked over to Arielle and dragged her by the hair. The guards tried to help but he held them back with a signal.
"Get up, witch!" He pulled her from there dropped her at my feet and glared at me.
Arielle avoided my eyes and peered at my feet.
"Reject her now, Damien!" Father roared. His voice echoed along the corners of the hall.
I growled and sneered at him. I got up and pulled her away from him.
"Father, I'm very disappointed in you. How can you bring up a rejection at my party? Have we all forgotten what we came here for?" I looked at the guests.
"That's right, remain quiet. This wench is as good as any reject, I won't spoil my important ceremony with a rejection, do I make myself clear, Father?!" I roared.
He glared at me but remained silent. He knew he had been defeated.
I sighed. "Good." I glanced at the guards, and they came to my side. "Take her away from here, to where her kind deserves. I won't allow her to ruin my ceremony with her curse!"
