Chapter 47: 47. Advanced Nurturing and the White Room
"Hey, Akira, I'm really curious. What kind of school is Advanced Nurturing High School? Why have I never heard of it before?"
Chitanda Eru, who had just had her cheeks pinched by Akira Sawamura, couldn't help but let her curiosity get the better of her. She instinctively raised her hand to ask.
"Uncle Sakayanagi is the chairman of that school. Maybe I should have him give you an introduction."
"Chitanda-san, there's really nothing to be curious about. Advanced Nurturing High School is a secretive high school funded by the government. It boasts a 100% college and employment rate. There are three grades, each with four classes: Class A, Class B, Class C, and Class D. Each class has exactly forty students. The rankings of the four classes are constantly changing. Only students who graduate from Class A in their third year can enter the university of their choice and pursue the career they desire.
"The school aims to reform the current education system, explore more advanced educational models, and cultivate outstanding talents for the country. In essence, the students there are just lab rats. The only reason I became the chairman is because of the Sakayanagi family's reputation in the education sector. To the public, it's disguised as a private high school founded by the Sakayanagi family."
Sakayanagi Narumori explained calmly.
Akira Sawamura took over and continued, "Actually, the Japanese government initiated a research project a long time ago called the White Room. Both Advanced Nurturing High School and the White Room share the same fundamental goal: to artificially create geniuses in various fields and enhance Japan's overall national strength.
"Advanced Nurturing High School simulates a survival-of-the-fittest, winner-takes-all environment. It adheres to the principles of social Darwinism, or the law of the jungle, forcing students to compete against each other to determine the ultimate winner. It's like breeding gu—only the students in Class A can achieve their dreams. The students there don't enjoy sweet, romantic campus lives; instead, they're immersed in schemes, deceit, and manipulation."
The girls gasped.
"As for the White Room, it's even more extreme. They take elementary school students whose worldviews and values haven't fully developed yet and lock them in white rooms. They're subjected to inhumane educational methods, with specialists teaching them various subjects every day.
"They learn not only standard academic subjects but also knowledge that ordinary people would never have access to, such as martial arts, self-defense, social tactics, military training, and so on. Essentially, all forms of secular entertainment are forbidden."
The girls shivered upon hearing this. What kind of life is that? It sounds like being a learning machine.
"The children there can only study, non-stop, from a young age. It's similar to how religious terrorists train suicide bombers and foot soldiers. Even the ancient ninjas of Japan were trained in a similar way. They're force-fed as much knowledge as possible. In essence, it's no different from brainwashing."
Akira shrugged, his tone dripping with sarcasm.
"Akira, how do you know all this?"
"Many students drop out of the White Room every year. How could such a research project remain hidden from those in power? It's just that the influential figures backing these two projects are powerful enough to keep them under wraps. The behind-the-scenes supporter of Advanced Nurturing High School is our current Prime Minister, Onishima. As for the White Room, it's backed by Naoe Taro, the secretary-general of the Civic Party."
Everyone gasped upon hearing Akira's revelations. No one expected that such high-ranking figures in Japan would be supporting these projects.
"Akira, do you think this plan can succeed?"
"Absolutely not. It might produce excellent talents, but true geniuses can never be created through rote learning. Unless someone is already a genius with an IQ far above average, because humanity's greatest gifts are imagination and creativity. Rote learning only destroys a person's imagination and creativity.
"These artificially created geniuses could never lead human civilization to new heights. When it comes to researching geniuses, the Arland Institution, which has been around for hundreds of years, is far ahead of the Japanese government. They've definitely tried this kind of training method, and it undoubtedly failed. Otherwise, they wouldn't be scouring the world for raw geniuses. On the contrary, I think this kind of training model will only mass-produce more ambitious schemers."
"Oh? Akira, why do you think that?"
"Swordsmanship families train their successors in a similar way to the White Room. Many of Japan's great families do the same. Take Saeko, for example. Besides attending school during the day, she has to practice swordsmanship as soon as she gets home, often until late at night. She also has to learn various household chores and how to be a good wife. She has no time for entertainment or play."
Murasakibara Seishou, as a master swordsman, underwent the same brutal family education from a young age. Every day, it was nothing but swordsmanship training.
"Master, the White Room's education is even more brutal. It lacks interpersonal communication and emotional bonds with parents and friends. Can someone raised like that even be considered human? They have no sense of good and evil, no empathy."
Akira pointed to his heart and asked everyone, "Why do I say that the strategies used in Advanced Nurturing High School are child's play? Because the students there rely on schemes, deceit, and framing to get ahead. They'll do anything to bring their opponents down. If they use these underhanded tactics so often in school, do you think they'll follow the right path once they enter society? Are schemes and open strategies the same?
"Ultimately, the essence of Advanced Nurturing High School is to give high school students a taste of the harsh realities of society, to show them how dirty the adult world can be. The White Room, on the other hand, forces students to cram a lifetime's worth of knowledge into just a few years, sacrificing the development of their personalities, emotions, and values."
Clap, clap, clap!
Everyone couldn't help but burst into applause. Their childhood friend was truly remarkable. His summary was spot-on.
