Chapter 3: The Shadows Move
The Avengers' compound was quiet now, but it didn't feel peaceful. After the fight with Tony and his group, the team was split. Everyone had gone to different places to cool off or think about what happened. It felt wrong.
Steve Rogers sat alone in the lounge, his shield leaning against the wall. He stared at it for a long time. His hands were sore, and his ribs hurt, but none of that compared to the pain in his chest. They weren't supposed to fight like this.
Natasha walked in, looking as tired as Steve felt. She sat across from him without saying anything at first.
"This is bad, Steve," she finally said. "I've seen us argue before, but this... I don't think we've ever been this broken."
Steve sighed and leaned back. "Tony's wrong about the system. But the way we're going at each other, it doesn't feel right either."
Natasha tilted her head, thinking. "Do you think there's any way to fix this? To bring everyone back together?"
"I don't know," Steve said honestly. "But we can't let Caleb's system keep going. That much is clear."
Natasha leaned forward. "Caleb's system isn't the end of this. I've been looking into it, and I found out something. He's not working alone."
Steve looked at her sharply. "What do you mean?"
"There's more to this," Natasha said. "Caleb had help—someone powerful and hidden. This wasn't just his idea. Someone wanted to use him to make us fight."
"Who?" Steve asked.
Natasha shrugged, her lips pressed into a thin line. "That's the thing. I don't know yet. But there's a name. I kept seeing it while digging around: Eclipse."
Steve frowned. "Eclipse? What's that supposed to mean?"
Natasha leaned back again, crossing her arms. "No idea. But whoever they are, they're smart. They've been planning this for a while."
Before Steve could say anything else, Sam walked in. He looked upset, and Steve could tell something was wrong.
"Steve," Sam said. "We've got a problem."
"What is it?" Steve asked, standing up.
"Vision's gone," Sam said.
"What do you mean, gone?" Steve asked, confused.
"He left," Sam said. "FRIDAY says he took some of the neural core data with him, too."
Natasha cursed under her breath. "Great. Just what we needed."
Steve looked at both of them. "We need to find him. If that data gets out, it could be a disaster."
"It's already out," Natasha said softly.
Steve and Sam stared at her.
"Whoever Eclipse is," Natasha said, "I think they're behind this. And now they probably have the data they need."
Somewhere far away...
A group of people stood in a dark room, lit only by the glow of a hologram on the table in front of them. At the head of the group stood a man in a black suit. His face was sharp, and his eyes were cold. His name was Elias Voss, and he was the leader of Eclipse.
"The Avengers are divided," Voss said, his voice calm. "This is the perfect time to act."
A woman stepped forward, her long coat swishing behind her. Her hair was bright red, and her eyes seemed to burn. Her name was Solaris.
"We've waited long enough," Solaris said impatiently. "When are we going to do something about them?"
Voss turned to her. "We already are. The neural core data is in our hands. With it, we can complete what Caleb started."
"Complete?" Solaris said, rolling her eyes. "His work was garbage. If you want this to succeed, you'll need me in charge of it."
Voss didn't look bothered by her attitude. "Your time will come, Solaris. For now, we focus on the plan."
A large man stepped forward. He was huge, with broad shoulders and a voice like gravel. His name was Magnus.
"And what's the plan, Voss?" Magnus asked.
Voss pressed a button, and the hologram changed. It showed a map of the Avengers' compound. "We take them out," he said simply.
Back at the compound...
Things were tense. The Avengers gathered in the war room, but nobody seemed eager to talk.
"We need to get it together," Steve said, looking at the others. "This isn't about us anymore. There's something bigger going on, and we can't face it if we stay divided."
"You think Tony's gonna listen to that?" Sam asked. "He's too busy with his 'save the world' plan."
"He'll come around," Natasha said. "But we can't wait for him. We have to move now."
"Move against who?" Wanda asked. "We don't even know who we're fighting. Caleb's system is running, but who's controlling it?"
"That's what we need to find out," Natasha said. "I've got some leads, but it'll take time. For now, we need to be ready for anything."
Before anyone could say more, an alarm blared. Red lights flashed, and FRIDAY's voice came over the speakers.
"Warning: Unauthorized entry detected. Hostiles approaching."
Steve grabbed his shield. "Everyone, suit up. Let's go."
The team rushed to the compound's entrance, ready for whatever was coming. When they got there, they saw armed men in tactical gear. They were well-trained and moved like a professional unit.
Steve raised his shield, blocking the first wave of gunfire. "Who are these guys?"
"No idea," Sam said, launching into the air. He fired missiles from his wings, scattering the attackers, but more just kept coming.
Wanda threw out a wave of red energy, knocking several enemies back. "There's too many!" she yelled.
Natasha and Bucky fought side by side, taking down enemies with precision. But then something big happened.
Magnus walked through the smoke, his massive figure making the others seem small. He held a giant hammer and looked like he enjoyed smashing things.
"Avengers," Magnus said in a deep voice, "you've been chosen."
Steve stepped forward. "Chosen for what?"
Magnus grinned. "To be destroyed."
He swung his hammer, and Steve barely had time to block. The force of the hit sent him flying across the room.
Sam tried to help, but Magnus swatted him out of the air like a fly. Wanda and Natasha attacked together, but Magnus didn't even slow down.
Then Solaris appeared, her body glowing with flames. She blasted fire at the group, forcing them to retreat.
"You can't win this," Solaris said with a smirk. "You're outmatched."
Steve got back up, breathing hard. "We've beaten worse than you."
"Not today," Solaris said, fire swirling around her.
The fight dragged on, but the Avengers were losing. Magnus and Solaris were too strong, and the endless waves of soldiers didn't help. But even as things got worse, Steve refused to give up.
Because that's who they were.
Even broken, they weren't ready to stop fighting.
