"Harry, step back!"
George didn't enter with the professors but obediently led Harry away from the door.
At this moment, all they could do was quietly wait for the outcome.
A moment later, chaotic sounds echoed from the room in the distance. There were rooster crows, the terrified hissing of a basilisk, and the sounds of various professors casting spells.
"Close your eyes tight!"
"Penetrating Curse!"
"Thunder Explosion!"
"Super Armor Protection!"
"Seal the basilisk's strongest abilities with the Blindness Curse, blast it away with the Explosion Curse, follow up with the Penetrating Curse, and use the Super Iron Armor to protect everyone from its retaliation. Even without the rooster, this basilisk wouldn't stand a chance against the professors!"
George listened to the commotion inside and couldn't help but marvel.
Except for the likes of Lockhart, who was useless, the wizarding professors at Hogwarts were among the top-tier in the entire wizarding world.
Even the Divination professor, Sybill Trelawney, who appeared mad and only ever rambled during classes, was actually the great-granddaughter of the true seer, Cassandra Trelawney.
When the sounds from the room subsided, George led Harry over.
By then, the basilisk's massive serpent body lay shattered on the ground, clearly dead beyond recovery.
The professors were unharmed, using magic to gather the scattered roosters and carefully placing them into boxes.
"Professor, I'm very interested in magical creatures. I've been learning a lot from Hagrid recently. Could I keep a few of its teeth as souvenirs?"
Seeing that the matter was resolved, George quickly turned to Snape with a request.
The basilisk's teeth were among the few things capable of destroying Voldemort's Horcruxes, so having a few could be useful in the future.
"This basilisk was easily dealt with, thanks to the rooster you brought. But be careful, its teeth are poisonous."
Snape didn't hesitate to agree.
George immediately went forward and removed a few of the basilisk's poisonous teeth, placing them in the box with the roosters.
With the basilisk taken care of, everyone finally relaxed.
But just as they were about to leave, Lockhart, who was walking at the back, secretly pulled out his wand.
He had been hiding in a corner, terrified during the basilisk fight. If the professors left now, his elaborate facade would collapse, and he would become the biggest fraud at Hogwarts.
So, he decided to take advantage of the relaxed atmosphere, casting a Memory Charm to erase everyone's memories and rewrite it to show that he had defeated the basilisk alone, saving the entire school.
"Professor Lockhart, what are you doing? Disarm yourself!"
George, who had been keeping an eye on Lockhart, saw him draw his wand and attempt to attack the professors. Without hesitation, George cast a Disarming Charm, knocking Lockhart back and disarming him.
"George, what's going on?"
McGonagall and the professors looked puzzled.
George pointed at Lockhart and replied,
"I just saw Professor Lockhart behind us, trying to cast a spell to attack the professors."
"No, I didn't! I would never do that! George, how could you attack a teacher?"
Lockhart quickly denied it as he got up, but Snape immediately approached him, casting a spell:
"Legilimency!"
Unlike Lockhart, Snape trusted George more.
A moment later, Snape said with a dark expression:
"This fool tried to cast a Memory Charm on us to claim the credit for defeating the basilisk, just like he did when he wrote books about other wizards' stories and erased their memories."
"This fraud... I knew he was a fake."
Upon hearing Snape's words, the professors immediately began angrily accusing Lockhart.
When Lockhart regained his senses, he tried to defend himself:
"You can't just slander me out of jealousy. I didn't do anything like that."
"Quickly, restrain him!"
Snape pointed his wand at Lockhart, and a rope appeared out of thin air, coiling around Lockhart like a snake, binding him tightly.
"You can explain all this to the Aurors at the Ministry of Magic. If you don't confess, I'll be happy to provide them with a few drops of Veritaserum."
"Sorry, Lockhart. Although you've signed a lot of notes for me, I can't let you wipe anyone's memories."
George thought to himself, seeing Lockhart's despairing face.
In truth, if Lockhart hadn't tried to erase everyone's memories, George wouldn't have interfered, especially since Lockhart often signed notes for him.
Lockhart erasing other wizards' memories and taking credit for their experiences to publish novels didn't concern George. Keeping Lockhart around meant he could continue to get notes to visit the Restricted Section.
Unfortunately, Lockhart had gone too far by attempting to erase everyone's memories, including George's, and George couldn't just let that slide.
Luckily, George had already copied most of the valuable materials from the Restricted Section, so not being able to go there wouldn't be a huge issue.
That afternoon, with the discovery of the Chamber of Secrets and the basilisk's death, Dumbledore naturally returned to the school.
As soon as Dumbledore returned, he immediately summoned George, Harry, Hermione, Ron, and Ginny to his office, where he thoroughly questioned them about what had happened.
George, of course, said what he needed to and kept quiet about what he didn't.
He had only encouraged Ginny to tell the truth and helped deliver the rooster, so his involvement in the matter wasn't substantial, and he wasn't asked many questions.
Most of the questioning was directed at Harry and Ginny.
Dumbledore was especially interested in the details of the night Ginny's diary was stolen, and he asked very carefully, clearly not wanting Voldemort's diary to fall into the wrong hands.
However, he didn't uncover any significant leads.
The problem was that Ginny, for some reason, didn't mention that she had placed the butterfly bookmark inside the diary. George thought she might have just forgotten that small detail.
Even if Ginny had mentioned it, it wouldn't have mattered—who would have guessed that George could use magnetic fields to locate the bookmark? Magnetism was a form of superpower, not part of the wizarding system, much like the scientific powers wizards couldn't understand.
As long as Dumbledore didn't use a Time-Turner, there was no way to detect the trick, and by now, it had been over five hours.
Moreover, if George hadn't encouraged Ginny, she might not have had the courage to confess everything. He felt that, in a way, he deserved some credit for this outcome.
Once the questioning was over, George returned to the dormitory without any interest in the private conversation Dumbledore had with Harry.
That evening, the school posted an announcement on the bulletin board about the basilisk being killed by the professors, and the students were thrilled.
Classes resumed as normal, the Quidditch matches continued, and the end-of-term exams began in a little more than half a month. There was no news of the exams being canceled, contrary to the events in the original story.
