Marvel's Alien Force

Chapter 19: Fall of Brilliance

"Hello, ladies and gentlemen. You're watching "What's Going On Tonight", and I'm your host, Emma William," she said, flashing the camera the perfect, practiced smile of a seasoned news anchor.

She gestured to her side, where another person sat—dressed in a crisp suit and tie. Just one look at him was enough to tell: this man held real power in the government.

"Today, we have a very special guest. Please welcome the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Kalen Vosir."

Kalen looked into the camera and gave a subtle nod. His appearance was the very image of age and authority: a wrinkled face, worn hands peeking from the sleeves of his perfectly ironed suit, and a violet tie speckled with stars. But his eyes—his eyes were sharp, alive. Strikingly different from the dull gaze of so many worn-out young men.

Emma went straight to the point.

"Mister Kalen, since you're here, the people of the world would like to know more about the phenomenon now being called the 'Fall of Brilliance.' What are your thoughts on it? And how does the UN plan to respond to the being who caused it?"

Kalen nodded politely before replying, "Please don't be alarmed by the phenomenon. It was created by none other than the UN's own Marshal Mutant—Mark Cain. Though we didn't anticipate the X-Men would try to stop him, fortunately, he was strong enough to defeat one of their top fighters."

Kalen lied without hesitation. He didn't care if the truth eventually came out and got them into deep trouble. What could that crystal guy even do to him—or to the UN? At best, he'd grovel while they stole his achievements right out from under him.

It wasn't the first time. The UN had done this countless times before. Kalen alone had claimed credit for over twenty of Tony Stark's feats.

And the ones they couldn't steal—like the Chitauri invasion? They simply blamed the superheroes for it happening in the first place, saying their existence invited such threats. And the public? They believed it without question.

It had happened so many times now that both Kalen and the UN had grown used to it. Taking credit from heroes was just business as usual.

Besides, most superheroes didn't live among regular people. They kept their distance, stayed out of the spotlight. They didn't care what governments or the world said about them.

Kalen arrived at the same conclusion about Mark as he had with others before him:

Take the credit.

Not only did he claim Mark's actions for the UN, but he also spun the narrative to make it seem like Mark had always been part of the organization—just another soldier following orders.

The "Fall of Brilliance," as it was now being called, became a symbol—not of Mark's power, but of the UN's.

And the X-Men? They were framed as the villains—mutants who tried to interfere with a sanctioned operation.

By doing so, Kalen had made the world believe in the government again.

Public trust surged—right alongside renewed prejudice against mutants.

Even the X-Men, who had risked everything to protect civilians during the Kaiju attack, were now being painted as threats.

Emma didn't ask anything about how it happened or what went down between Jean Grey and Mark Cain. She simply smiled and repeated what he said. After all, that's what they were told to do.

But Jane, who was sitting with Jenny, looked at the television and couldn't help but clench her fist as she muttered, "Liar."

She knew who had saved her daughter—it was none other than Jean Grey. And now they were blaming the savior of her daughter just to push their own agenda. But she couldn't do anything about this as she was powerless.

And she wasn't alone. Many people who had been present at the scene near the Golden Gate Bridge knew what had really happened. They tried to speak out, to tell the truth—but they found themselves unable to access their social media accounts. Forget that—even their SIM cards had stopped working, showing "out of reach" no matter where they were.

As for those in power, They kept their mouths shut—or worse, started repeating exactly what Secretary-General Kalen Vosir was saying.

They didn't care about heroism or any of that crap. As long as they could keep their positions, stay under those above them, and hold power over those below them… that was all that mattered.

"You work for the UN?" Martha asked Mark as they watched TV while having dinner. It was already night by the time they got home—or more accurately, Martha's home. Mark used to live in a hostel. But now that he had been reborn, he didn't need to go back there anymore.

As for clothes… well, let's just say he discovered they didn't fit him anymore. He wasn't sure how or why it happened—No, it probably started when he awakened his mutant ability.

His human form had changed.

His previously average, slim frame—one that looked decent without any exercise—was gone.

When he transformed back to his human form, everything had shifted.

His height had gone from 6 feet to 6 feet 4 inches.

His body had developed tight, well-defined muscles.

His waist narrowed, his chest broadened.

Even Scott's suit was now a bit too tight on him—thanks to how muscular yet lean he had somehow become after the transformation.

He looked at the news while chewing on the pizza they'd ordered earlier.

He hadn't expected his actions to be labeled the "Fall of Brilliance."

It sounded more like the fall of an angel or something.

And as for the UN turning him into their lapdog?

"It seems they've gotten so used to taking credit for other people's work, they don't even care anymore," Mark said.

Martha glanced at him.

"So you're saying… they're lying?"

Mark nodded.

"Well, if they were telling the truth, then why would something like the Kaiju even be a problem? I would've already taken care of it before it reached the Golden Gate Bridge."

Lily looked at them while they talked, then turned her eyes to the television. It was showing footage of the light from earlier—the same brilliance that had spread across different places around the world.

"Big brother, can I do that too?" she asked, eyes wide as she stared at the glowing light.

Mark glanced at her and asked, "Why would you want to do that?"

Lily answered as she chewed her pizza, "I also want to be a super hero."

Her words came out in a completely garbled mess, her mouth still full—making it impossible for anyone to understand.

"First, chew your food before talking," Martha said with a sigh as she look at her daughter.

Lily did exactly that—she quickly chewed her food and gulped it down, then asked again, "Can I do it?"

Mark looked at her and replied calmly,

"No, you can't. Your power is different."

This time, Martha's interest was piqued.

"What is her power?" she asked.

She truly wanted to know what her daughter's ability was—she hadn't seen Lily use it yet.

Mark didn't say much. Instead, he simply looked at the pizza box in front of them. With nothing but his will, he focused on it.

A moment later, psychic energy gently wrapped around the box, and it began to rise—slowly, steadily—lifted by the power of his thoughts and will alone.

"This is Lily's power—telekinesis. The ability to manipulate objects with her will," Mark said. Then he looked at Lily and added, "But… don't try to use it yet, okay? I'll teach you how to use it properly."

"Can't I try… just a little bit?" Lily asked, her eyes hopeful.

But Mark shook his head, his expression turning serious.

"No. Don't do it. It might look amazing, but it's also dangerous if you don't know how to control it. Not just for you—but for your mother and your home too. Understood?"

Lily wanted to say something, but seeing Mark's serious expression, she simply nodded.

Martha watched their interaction silently.

Normally, she wouldn't have liked a stranger scolding her precious daughter like that… but Mark didn't feel like a stranger. He clearly cared about Lily, so she couldn't bring herself to object.

She didn't fully understand the consequences of these powers—so she wasn't in a position to judge whether what he said was right or wrong.

But since he was also a telekinetic, she had to accept that her daughter was being scolded by someone who might as well be her teacher.

Her eyes lingered on Mark.

He was young—maybe 25 or 26 at most.

His features were strikingly handsome, and with that face and incredible body, he could easily pass for a celebrity.

But… that life was no longer an option for him.

Just like her daughter, who had now awakened as a mutant, wouldn't have the same life either.

And Martha herself—being both the mother of a mutant and someone now seen publicly with Mark—

Her life had changed too.

Their lives had completely changed—and Martha knew things could never go back to how they used to be.

She looked at him and asked, "You said before that you're going to stay with us… is it only because of taking care of Lily?"

Mark looked at her and replied, "Not just that. You see, it's not only about looking after Lily… but also about protecting both of you. I've already become a target—and now that Lily's awakened as a mutant, she might become one too."

Martha tilted her head slightly and asked, "Protect us from who?"

Mark stood up from his seat.

"Well… from our guests, I guess."

As he spoke, his form began to shift—transforming back into the same Diamondhead figure from before.

He looked at them calmly and said, "Stay here."

Saying that, he used his crystal powers to surround the living room, making sure nothing could get in. A wall of diamond-hard crystal rose around the space, sealing it off completely.

Then, Mark stepped into the hallway and reinforced the entrance to the living room with another layer of crystal, locking Martha and Lily inside—safe.

The two could only watch, stunned by the sudden shift in atmosphere.

They still didn't know what was happening.

But Mark knew.

With his heightened senses—borrowed from the alien forms he now had access to—he tapped into vibrations, reading the subtle shifts in the air and ground.

They were here.

They'd sensed a mutant nearby.

And they had come—to capture. Or to kill.

Whether it was for him or for Lily didn't matter now.

As he already knew who they were.

Sentinels.
