Marvel x Star Wars: Avengers in the Clone Wars

Chapter 36: Chapter 36: The Battle Begins - Attacking the Malevolence

General Grievous stood menacingly on the bridge of the Malevolence, his mechanical eyes fixed on the Republic medical station ahead, when one of his tactical droids reported that a squadron of Republic starfighters was approaching from their rear flank.

"Skywalker," Grievous growled with obvious relish, his voice carrying the distinctive mechanical rasp that had become feared throughout the galaxy. He also noticed that the Republic medical personnel were frantically attempting to evacuate the station.

"Target those medical frigates immediately," Grievous commanded with cold calculation. "We will not allow a single wounded Republic clone to escape alive."

"Sir, what about the Republic starfighter squadron approaching our position?" a pilot droid inquired with mechanical precision.

"Fool!" Grievous snapped, backhanding the droid for its stupidity. "Launch our fighters to engage them immediately, and begin charging the ion cannons to full power."

Aboard Shadow Squadron's lead bomber, Steve narrowed his eyes as he observed the ominous blue energy beginning to build along the sides of the massive Separatist warship.

"What are they doing?" he asked with growing concern.

"They're powering up their ion cannon," Master Plo Koon said grimly, his voice carrying the weight of terrible understanding. "They're targeting the medical evacuation ships!"

"We have to act immediately," Ahsoka shouted with desperate urgency, "or all those wounded soldiers are going to die!"

"We have our own problems to deal with first, Commander," called out Broadside, the bald clone pilot, as he stared at the approaching swarm of Hyena bombers and Vulture droids. "Enemy fighters inbound!"

"Shadow Squadron," Rhodey's voice cut through the communication channels with military authority, "remember those new tactical formations I showed you?"

Acknowledgments crackled back through the squadron's comm system from all pilots.

"Well, now's the time to put them to the test," Rhodey announced with grim determination.

The Four Finger formation fighters positioned themselves with practiced precision, while Anakin led the charge with Master Plo Koon flying alongside him in perfect coordination.

As the droid fighters drew closer, Rhodey waited for the optimal moment, calculating distances and attack vectors with the expertise of a veteran combat pilot, until...

"Now! Execute!"

The bomber formation began moving and changing positions with lightning speed, suddenly flying over and around the droid fighters while unleashing concentrated barrages of laser fire that cut through their ranks like a crimson scythe, creating a devastating wave of destruction.

"Excellent work, Shadow Squadron!" Anakin praised enthusiastically, witnessing firsthand the devastating effectiveness of these new Earth-based tactics.

"Don't get overconfident yet," Sam warned through his comm. "I'm seeing more droid reinforcements incoming from multiple vectors."

Meanwhile, the Malevolence had successfully destroyed several of the fleeing medical vessels, its massive turbolasers reducing the defenseless hospital ships to expanding clouds of debris and flame. As the carnage continued, the warship began rotating to bring its deadly ion cannons to bear directly on Skywalker's fighter squadron.

"Prepare to fire ion cannon," Grievous ordered with sadistic anticipation.

"But sir," a tactical droid protested, "our own fighters are still engaged within the target area."

"Carry out my orders without question," Grievous commanded coldly, demonstrating his complete disregard for his own forces.

In the space around the Malevolence, a chaotic dogfight erupted as Republic squadrons weaved between and around Separatist fighters in a deadly three-dimensional ballet of laser fire and evasive maneuvers.

Sam shot down another Hyena bomber with a precisely aimed burst and called out, "Guys, these droid pilots are absolutely terrible at dogfighting!"

"They're bringing their main guns around to target us!" Ahsoka yelled desperately, firing at every enemy fighter that entered her targeting reticle.

Anakin performed a sharp barrel roll around an attacking Vulture droid and destroyed it with a concentrated burst of laser fire, his natural piloting skills enhanced by Force precognition.

Grievous watched the developing battle with narrowed mechanical eyes, anticipating the moment when his ion cannon would be ready to fire again and eliminate the troublesome Republic squadron in a single devastating blast.

"Here it comes!" Steve shouted as he detected the building energy signature.

"Evasive maneuvers!" Anakin yelled, pushing his starfighter's engines to maximum power as five Y-wing bombers followed closely behind him. The remaining pilots formed smaller groups of four or five and rapidly moved beyond the ion cannon's effective targeting range.

"Shadow Squadron, report in," Anakin ordered with growing concern.

All pilots responded through the communication system except for Shadow Four, Six, Seven, and Ten.

"We lost four fighters in that blast," Ahsoka said with heavy disappointment and grief.

"They're still alive, though," Rhodey reported, scanning with his suit's advanced sensors. "I'm reading life signs, but their ships are completely powered down. They won't survive long in the vacuum without life support."

Anakin nodded grimly, gripping his flight controls tighter as he spoke with renewed determination. "Then we fight back, we win this engagement, and we bring our people home."

"Everyone tighten formation and prepare for our attack run," Anakin commanded, leading Shadow Squadron in a direct assault course toward the massive enemy warship.

Aboard the Malevolence, Grievous released a mechanical chuckle of amusement.

"Fools!" Grievous said with obvious glee. "Skywalker has learned nothing from losing so many fighters to my ion cannon." He turned to one of his tactical droids and demanded, "How long until our ion cannons can fire again?"

"Approximately three minutes for full recharge, General," the pilot droid replied with mechanical precision.

Shadow Squadron was now weaving frantically around the Malevolence, desperately trying to avoid being shot down by the warship's numerous defensive turret batteries while searching for vulnerable targets.

"We need to maintain our current approach vector," Anakin called out.

"Easy for you to say," one of the clone pilots responded with strained humor. "These defensive batteries are putting out some seriously heavy fire."

"Matchstick, you're taking hits!" Ahsoka yelled to one of her fellow pilots.

"My stabilizers are damaged," the clone pilot reported with concerning calm.

"Fighter down!" Master Plo Koon shouted, watching in grief as another Y-wing spiraled out of control toward the warship's hull.

"Master, we need to reconsider our tactical approach," Ahsoka argued with growing desperation.

Anakin remained focused, pushing his fighter forward at maximum speed while maintaining his unwavering determination. "Hold on, Ahsoka. We can do this."

A tactical droid on the Malevolence's bridge noticed that despite the intense defensive fire, Shadow Squadron refused to break off their attack, and reported to Grievous: "Sir, enemy fighters are still approaching our position."

"Let them come," Grievous said with arrogant confidence. "Prepare the ion cannon for another firing sequence. We will destroy that medical station first, then turn our attention to eliminating Skywalker permanently."

One battle droid turned to another and whispered nervously, "I have a very bad feeling about this."

"Watch out for those defensive towers, everyone," Sam warned while engaging several Vulture droids that were trying to intercept his bombing run.

"We're hit! Going down!" The damaged clone fighter crashed directly into the Malevolence's hull in a brilliant explosion before the pilot could eject.

"Shadow Nine is down!" someone reported with anguish.

Ahsoka gritted her teeth and continued her argument with Anakin: "Master, I believe in you, but we're losing too many good pilots." When Anakin remained silent and focused, it only increased her anxiety about their situation.

Aboard the Malevolence, a tactical droid provided status updates. "Our primary weapon systems are being targeted, General."

"Accelerate the ion cannon charging sequence," Grievous ordered impatiently.

After destroying several more droid fighters, Master Plo Koon suddenly conceived a potential solution to neutralize the ion cannon threat. "If we can inflict sufficient structural damage to the ion cannon's primary focusing array, it should overload catastrophically when Grievous attempts to fire, potentially causing a complete system failure."

Hearing this tactical assessment, Anakin immediately began formulating a plan to accomplish this objective and transmitted new orders: "Shadow Squadron, break right and approach the ion cannon from its rear firing arc. Attack the support structure with everything you've got."

"Ion cannon charge at seventy-five percent," a Separatist droid reported dutifully.

At that moment, Shadow Squadron had successfully maneuvered into position behind the massive weapon system.

"Target those primary support beams and unleash full ordnance," Rhodey commanded with military precision.

Shadow Squadron released every proton torpedo loaded in their Y-wing bombers, and the massive explosions from concentrated torpedo impacts caused the entire Malevolence to shudder violently.

On the bridge of the Malevolence, Grievous observed that the ion cannon had finally reached full charge capacity, and ignoring the damage being inflicted on his ship, he roared the firing command: "Fire all weapons!"

However, he was completely unprepared for the ion cannon to suddenly suffer a catastrophic overload failure. The violent explosion tore through both sides of the Separatist warship, causing the entire vessel to shake violently as secondary explosions rippled through adjacent systems. Grievous was thrown to the deck by the force of the blast.

"Outstanding work, Shadow Squadron!" Master Plo Koon praised with genuine admiration.

Grievous struggled back to his feet and shouted frantically, "Damage assessment report!"

"Sir, both primary ion cannons are completely destroyed!" one droid reported.

"Hyperdrive systems severely damaged!" another tactical droid added even worse news.

"What?!" Grievous was absolutely horrified and screamed, "Impossible!"

"General," yet another droid delivered the final crushing blow, "Republic Star Destroyers are approaching our position at maximum speed."

"Anakin, please respond," came Obi-Wan Kenobi's familiar voice through the communication channels.

Anakin smiled when he heard his former Master's voice and quickly replied, "Copy that, Obi-Wan. Good to hear from you."

"Congratulations on your successful mission. It appears you've accomplished your primary objectives."

"Only partially accomplished," Anakin replied with slight disappointment, his voice growing more somber. "Grievous is still alive and operational. This battle cost us dearly—we lost good pilots today. Now we need to proceed to the medical station to complete the evacuation."

General Kenobi nodded with understanding. "Don't worry about the Malevolence. Leave the rest to us."

"I'll be waiting for your good news, Obi-Wan."

After ending the communication, Kenobi addressed his clone commanders with renewed determination: "Alright, men. Now let's finish what Shadow Squadron started. Give them everything we've got!"

Soon afterward, Republic Star Destroyers under Obi-Wan's command opened concentrated fire on the crippled Malevolence as it attempted to retreat from the battlefield.

The Malevolence, having lost most of its offensive capabilities and suffering critical system failures throughout, desperately tried to escape back to Separatist-controlled space while Republic forces pressed their advantage.
