In the end, Evan and the others did not turn Fury into a sheep and throw him onto the playground to watch him graze.
Noah sighed. Although he had stopped this plan, he felt a deep sense of regret.
Imagine it: the future director of S.H.I.E.L.D., a man who would do anything to achieve his goals, turned into a sheep, grazing in the playground of the mutant school. What a sight that would be!
After a moment of thought, Noah considered that Fury would likely choose to forget this incident once his anger subsided. Then, when he or his subordinates needed a mission carried out, they might approach them, asking for help with turning into animals or something similar. This possibility seemed the most likely, right?
"It seems not telling Fury exactly where we are was the right choice," Noah mused.
He had never been particularly fond of Fury. But after multiple interactions and considering the context of this world, Noah's feelings had shifted.
In fact, whether in this world or the world of the original movie, many of Fury's actions that had once disgusted Noah were, in retrospect, not that egregious.
From the standpoint of an ordinary person, his decisions were quite logical.
For example, when studying the Cosmic Cube, it made sense that Fury would take precautions. Earthlings had discovered that aliens existed and were a threat. Fury didn't know that Earth had its guardians. Naturally, he had to prepare.
Though the results were catastrophic—attracting Thanos's attention and bringing the Chitauri to attack Earth—Fury had acted out of necessity.
And as for his humble approach toward the Avengers, well, if he hadn't done that, how could the proud Avengers have ever taken him seriously?
"Although I still think he's annoying, I also think he's kind of interesting," Noah reflected aloud.
Noah was walking downstairs, stroking his chin in thought. Their room had been on the third floor, while Professor Charles' office was on the first. Noah wasn't planning on using magic for such a short distance. It would be too lazy for just a few steps, wouldn't it?
Evan and the others were still engaged in an animated argument with Fury. Despite their heated debate, it was clear there was no malice involved.
Fury, using his more modern knowledge and experience, was taking jabs at Evan and the others. Meanwhile, the three magicians were mocking Fury with their understanding of magic.
Noah deliberately filtered out the frequent comments about "What creature do you want to be turned into?" He was worried that he might get too carried away and start researching again. Noah was never one to shy away from specialization, and his elemental magic was proof of that.
He used to think he wasn't good enough, but it turned out that his lack of interest had been the only thing holding him back. When he was genuinely interested, he found that he was no worse than anyone else.
The concept of being "interest-driven" was very true. When you're invested in something, you often get twice the results with half the effort.
"Huh?"
While walking, Noah suddenly sensed someone sneaking into Professor Charles' office.
This surprised him. Had someone fled?
He was also curious about the soul of this individual—it felt ancient.
At Kamar-Taj, Noah had not only learned space magic but had also continued studying soul magic. Although this took up much of his energy—given that he was learning three types of magic at once—he was managing well. The system space had provided him with more time, more information, and more opportunities for practice, which helped him advance his knowledge at an accelerated rate.
"An old soul, sneaking into Professor Charles' office? Could it be Logan?"
Noah stroked his chin, considering the possibility, but quickly dismissed the thought. After all, he would meet this person soon enough.
Without saying anything to the four still arguing, Noah quietly approached the door to Professor Charles' office.
Just then, a girl emerged from the office.
"Wow, is this through the wall?"
The others stopped upon noticing their destination.
The girl, a bit startled at first, nodded in acknowledgment before leaving quickly. Evan, touching his chin, spoke in a low voice.
"Nothing strange, don't forget that we saw a little ghost in the teleportation space yesterday. They seem to be doing well here."
Noah casually responded, "Yeah, we did observe the children here yesterday. They seem fine. They're a bit sensitive and wary of strangers, but once they realize we mean no harm, they're fine."
"Innate abilities are incredible, but I don't think they're as practical as magic," Kate commented, tilting her head.
"That's not entirely true," Noah replied, shaking his head. "It's more about specialization versus diversity. Mutants' powers are more specialized—they might only have one ability, but if they perfect it, it could be powerful. Magicians, on the other hand, develop multiple abilities and use them against different enemies. It's hard to say which is better, but perhaps a versatile magician would have the upper hand against a mutant who's mastered just one skill."
He paused, contemplating the idea. "At the same level, a magician with multiple skills would have an advantage over a mutant who only knows one ability. After all, I can use skills that specifically counter yours."
Noah knocked on the door and, finding it unlocked, pushed it open.
Unlike at Hogwarts or Kamar-Taj, they didn't need to be overly formal.
"Ah, our guests are here. Are you members of S.H.I.E.L.D.?" Professor Charles greeted them with a warm smile.
"Hello, Professor Charles. Yes, we're from S.H.I.E.L.D. I'm sure you've heard of us," Fury answered, stepping forward and looking around.
"We've heard about your situation here and wanted to come check in," Fury continued, with the four magicians standing behind him. He felt more confident with them present, especially since he'd never forget how a certain bald female magician—Noah's teacher—had crushed an alien fleet in front of him!
Logan, standing nearby, shook his head in disdain. "What bureau are you from? Forget it, it doesn't matter. Are you planning to recruit mutants as weapons?"
"Thanks for the concern," Fury replied, taking a deep breath and looking slightly annoyed. "Our plans don't concern you. Are you Logan Howlett? Lieutenant Howlett, Captain Howlett, or Sergeant Howlett?"
Fury was well aware of Logan, his history, and his service in multiple wars, including World War I, World War II, and the Vietnam War. The SHIELD database contained extensive files on mutants, including Logan. Fury didn't know about Logan's involvement in the Civil War, but he did notice that Logan seemed confused by his questions.
"Okay, Commander, Logan has lost his memory. He doesn't remember his past," Professor Charles interjected, his expression troubled.
He sighed, looking at Fury with concern. "If you're looking to recruit mutants, you've come to the wrong place. We're a school, not an agent training center."
Noah suddenly spoke up, his voice filled with frustration. "Are you really going to let the mutants die like this?"
Professor Charles frowned. "What do you mean by that?" he asked, sensing something unusual in Noah's tone.
Noah sighed again. "You think you're protecting your kind, but you're being naïve. Your approach is flawed…"
Before Noah could finish, Logan's eyes flashed with anger. He walked toward Fury, gritting his teeth.
"What do you know about me? What do you know?"
"Stop, Logan!" Professor Charles shouted, his face tense as he sensed an unusual headache beginning.
He knew Logan had lost his memory, but he was unaware of which specific memories were gone. Now, with Fury hinting at Logan's past, the situation was rapidly becoming volatile.
If Logan attacked a SHIELD agent in the mutant school, the consequences could be disastrous.
Professor Charles knew he had to take action to protect everyone.
But just as he was about to intervene, his eyes widened in shock.
