Chapter 35: Chapter 35: Sorcerer Supreme? Not Even Close
"You will be the Sorcerer Supreme."
When Ben heard what the Ancient One said, a bewildered expression immediately crossed his crystalline features, as if someone had just asked him to personally defeat the Justice League single-handedly.
"You're joking, Master Ancient One. I don't know the first thing about magic," he said, shaking his head in refusal.
What was so appealing about becoming the Sorcerer Supreme anyway?
The title might sound impressive, but in reality, it meant being trapped in the sanctum, constantly defending against dimensional demons and cosmic threats. There were no tangible benefits, just endless responsibility and perpetual danger.
As for the Time Stone that the Ancient One wielded, Ben wasn't particularly impressed by it either.
Setting aside the temporal aliens like Clockwork that existed within the Omnitrix, or transformations like Alien X who transcended space and time entirely, the Time Stone was ultimately just a tool that only functioned within this specific universe.
Outside this reality, the Time Stone would be nothing more than an attractive paperweight.
Most importantly, Ben had no intention of confining himself to a sanctuary and taking on responsibilities that weren't his to bear.
"You possess tremendous magical potential," the Ancient One said with complete seriousness. "I can state with absolute certainty that if you were willing to remain at Kamar-Taj, you would be the most gifted student we have ever trained, surpassing even the greatest masters in our history."
What? I'm the most gifted? Ben's expression grew even more puzzled. For a moment, he couldn't tell whether the Ancient One was testing him or if she genuinely believed that anyone could achieve such heights.
The real question was: who actually was the most gifted?
"I thought Stephen Strange was supposed to be the most naturally talented," Ben said, referencing his knowledge of this reality's future events.
"He was," the Ancient One nodded, unsurprised that Ben knew about Strange. She spoke slowly and deliberately. "But then you arrived."
She stood and began walking in a slow circle around Ben's seated form, continuing her explanation. "Within your body, there exists enormous untapped potential. It resembles magic, but it's far more than just conventional magical energy. In your terminology, I believe you would call it—mana."
Ben was momentarily stunned by this revelation.
"Do I have Anodite heritage?"
In the Ben 10 universe, both Ben and Gwen possessed Anodite bloodlines through their grandmother Verdona. The Anodites were powerful energy beings who could manipulate mana instinctively, treating magic as naturally as breathing.
It was notoriously difficult for Anodite hybrids with diluted bloodlines to activate their abilities. Even Ben and Gwen's fathers, who carried half-Anodite genetics, had never manifested any supernatural powers.
The Ancient One shook her head. "No, your bloodline appears to be purely human. However, based on your explanation of this 'mana,' it seems that any sufficiently developed consciousness can potentially access such forces."
Hearing this, Ben nodded thoughtfully.
The Ancient One was correct—in Ben10 universe, beings like Charmcaster and Hex, while not Anodites themselves, could still harness mana to cast spells and manipulate reality.
However, in comparison, Hex could only access magical power through the use of talismans and artifacts, lacking the natural talent that Charmcaster possessed.
"But in this dimension, no such natural magical energy exists. You are the only being who possesses true mana, Mr. Parker," the Ancient One said, her gaze fixed intently on Ben.
There was barely concealed eagerness hidden beneath her calm exterior.
Perhaps Ben regarded mana simply as another superpower, but in the Ancient One's eyes, it represented something far more significant—a seed that could take root and flourish in this reality.
Every magician in this world who wished to cast spells had to bargain with dimensional entities for power, drawing energy from beings like Dormammu or the Vishanti. This created a system of magical debt and dependence that left practitioners vulnerable to corruption.
But Ben, with his natural mana abilities, could potentially explore and develop his own magical strength independent of any external sources. More than that, he might be able to teach others, fundamentally changing the magical framework of the entire planet.
However, Ben still rejected the Ancient One's proposal without hesitation.
Learning magical techniques might be interesting, but accepting the responsibilities that came with magical mastery was entirely different!
"Maybe I'll reconsider in the future, but right now, I don't plan to waste my time studying magic," he said with a shake of his head. With the Omnitrix at his disposal, magic would be nothing more than a supplementary skill set.
In response, the Ancient One said nothing further.
In truth, she had already anticipated this outcome, but she'd felt compelled to make the offer anyway.
"I will send you back now."
She opened another portal and watched as Ben stepped through, leaving Kamar-Taj behind.
After Ben's departure, Baron Mordo slowly approached, his eyes containing hints of resentment and jealousy, though he still spoke with respectful deference. "Master, Supreme Sorcerer, was what you just said... true?"
"I see no magical talent in that young man, yet you claimed he would be the greatest of us all..."
"It's perfectly normal that you cannot perceive it," the Ancient One replied without any trace of emotion, though her gaze remained fixed on the spot where Ben had vanished, even though nothing remained there now.
"This isn't a question of whether he is merely 'excellent' or not. He is... unique." The Ancient One paused, choosing her words carefully before continuing.
"Perhaps he has the potential to become a new type of dimensional entity entirely..."
Back in Queens, instead of returning Ben to Oscorp Tower, the Ancient One had sent him directly home.
Diamondhead's massive crystalline form was difficult to maneuver in the cramped confines of his small bedroom, but fortunately, the transformation's time limit expired soon after his arrival.
After Ben carefully stored the antidote serum, his thoughts turned to the state of Oscorp after the night's battle.
The entire Oscorp Building had been virtually destroyed during the confrontation. From the outside, the structure appeared intact, but the interior was a complete disaster zone.
"I wonder if this will have any serious impact on Norman," Ben thought with genuine concern.
If Oscorp Enterprises never recovered from this incident, it could be a devastating blow to Norman Osborn's empire.
He hadn't cared much about such consequences initially, but Norman had been genuinely generous to him. Even accounting for the man's obvious self-interest, he had provided Ben with hundreds of millions of dollars worth of resources and support.
Ben didn't particularly care whether Norman was fundamentally a good or bad person—he only knew that the man had helped him when he needed it most.
"Once my equipment arrives and I get the lab properly set up, I'll help Norman and Harry cure their genetic conditions first," Ben decided. "It'll be a small way to repay their assistance."
He turned his head and saw Peter leaning heavily against the window frame, looking utterly exhausted. Peter was soaked to the skin, his hair plastered to his cheeks, and he reeked of something absolutely horrific.
"Did you decide to take a swim in the city's sewer system?" Ben asked, pinching his nose in disgust but still opening the window to let Peter inside.
Peter felt as though his limbs could barely support his own weight. As soon as the window opened, he practically tumbled inside and slumped against the wall, gasping for breath like a marathon runner who'd just crossed the finish line.
"I had to swim through sewage and nearly drowned several times," he said with a weak smile and an exhausted thumbs-up. "The water had an extremely high concentration of... well, let's just say it wasn't pleasant."
Ben wanted to throw him right back out the window.
However, the bloody wounds visible on Peter's chest were genuinely alarming.
Sewers contained countless dangerous bacteria and pathogens. If those wounds weren't disinfected quickly, they could become seriously infected.
Though Ben wasn't entirely certain—with Spider-Man's enhanced immune system, perhaps those microorganisms would be quickly eliminated by his superior immune cells before they could cause lasting damage.
