Nova's gaze stayed locked on the massive Thunder Dragon for several long, tense moments. Every instinct screamed to turn back, but there was no other path. The gate shimmered faintly behind the altar — and the opportunity the compass had led him to was behind it.

Of all the damn things it could've been, it had to be a Dragon. A Thunder Dragon.

After a brief moment of hesitation, Nova suppressed his greed and shook his head. "I can't compete with that dragon yet. He's a level hundred boss villain while I'm still in a novice village. I will be back… back to kill and claim the title of 'Dragon Slayer' and whatever that dragon is hiding."

He took a single, cautious step back.

And the dragon's eye snapped open.

A storm-gold slit of light cut through the gloom, locking directly onto Nova's position despite the layers of cloaking spells around him. Every muscle in his body froze.

Oh, shit. It can see through cloaking? That's cheating. That's actual cheating.

A low, guttural snarl rumbled through the cavern. The air thickened, thunder mana crackling along the walls, and the dragon uncoiled, its corrupted scales brushing against stone with a sound like grinding steel.

"Shit."

Nova reacted on instinct.

"Reality Script: Gravity Lighten, Mana Skin."

Gravity around him warped, his body feeling feather-light as his movements quickened. A shimmering barrier of mana formed around his frame — a crude but sturdy Mana Skin patterned after what he'd managed to glean from the Ashbourne family notes.

Alright, Nova, you made the dumb decision, now survive it.

The beast lunged forward, wings flaring wide and kicking up a violent gust. Debris and leaves spiraled into the air as the cavern shuddered under the force of its movement.

Nova summoned the old broom Father Orsi had given him from his inventory and kicked off the ground, streaking upward. The enchanted broom wobbled under the sudden acceleration but carried him toward the cavern's higher reaches.

Still the shittiest broom in existence, but it'll have to do.

But the dragon was faster.

With a roar, it surged upward after him, massive clawed forelimbs slicing through the air. Nova dodged one swipe by a hair's breadth, the gust from its passage nearly tearing him from his broom. A second later, the beast's tail swept sideways.

Nova's eyes widened.

Not dying to a tail swipe. Not today.

"Reality Script: Weight Shift!"

The spell barely altered his broom's trajectory as the tail whooshed past, the shockwave sending Nova tumbling. He crashed hard onto an outcropping, the broom splintering beneath him.

His ribs screamed in protest. Blood filled his mouth.

Cracked a rib. Perfect. Add it to the list.

"Damn thing's fast."

The dragon landed with a crash, scales scraping stone, lightning crackling around its jaws. It wasted no time, hurling itself toward Nova again, claws swiping low and fast. He barely ducked, the claw-tip nicking his shoulder and sending a searing line of pain down his arm.

Nova dove into the undergrowth, sliding between mossy stones and collapsed roots. The beast gave chase relentlessly — a game of cat and mouse. Tail strikes shattered boulders inches from his head. Claws tore trenches through the earth he rolled over a second before impact.

I did not sign up for this. Which bastard signed me up for this?

"Reality Script: Gravity Lighten!"

His body grew lighter again, allowing him to dart forward, leaping from stone to stone, every movement driven by pure instinct and terror. The dragon's jaws snapped shut where he'd just been, teeth crashing together with bone-crushing force.

Another swipe caught his leg, hurling him against a broken column. He coughed blood.

Alright, maybe… definitely should've stayed home.

"Enhancement Magic: Mana Reinforcement!"

The bruises dulled, his limbs regaining strength. Still, exhaustion crept in.

Move. Move now, Nova, or you're dragon food.

Nova kept moving, always a half-step ahead of the next attack. Claws pulverized ancient trees. The tail nearly flattened him. Another breath attack missed narrowly, lightning detonating against a stone ledge. The air shimmered with residual static, burning his skin.

He dove, rolled, scrambled over rocks slick with old moss. Then he noticed something.

The dragon's pace slowed imperceptibly. Its breaths deepened, its attacks a fraction less precise.

This old lizard's getting slower. Maybe he's old? Age catching up to it?

Nova decided to gamble. He ran toward a broken column that lay nearby.

"Reality Script: Zero Gravity."

The gravity lost its effect on the pillar, which Nova easily picked up and hurled violently at the dragon.

The dragon swiped its claw and easily crushed the column.

It turned its head and saw five more columns and large stones flying toward it. The dragon opened its mouth and roared, unleashing its thunder breath, which tore apart those columns and rocks.

' That old lizard bastard, it was acting to be slowed to trick. No way he could be exhausted if he could use that huge thunder breath.'

Nova grumbled, while panting, those attacks taxed heavily on his energy reserves.

Suddenly a tail strike sent Nova tumbling. Unguarded, he was hit hard, his vision swimming. The massive creature loomed overhead, panting, dark mist curling from its maw.

Okay… one more gamble. This'll decide whether I live or die.

"Reality Script: Gravity Lock!"

Sigils flared beneath its feet. The dragon's limbs wavered as gravity increased fivefold around it.

Nova forced himself upright.

This is it. My only chance at life.

He drew the Demon Dweller Sword, having wisely absorbed a huge amount of water mana into it earlier.

Pointing the sword towards the dragon, a torrent of pure water mana surged forth, a beam of sapphire light smashing into the dragon's skull. The force hurled the beast backward. Debris and dust exploded.

Nova staggered, watching carefully as the dust cleared.

The dragon remained alive. That massive water mana attack had only damaged a single eye, leaving it scorched shut.

Nova could practically see the killing intent surging in the dragon's other eye.

Gripping the sword's hilt, he almost drowned in despair. Then a stray memory surfaced. Something about the Demon Dweller Sword, he saw from canon.

All or nothing.

He hurled it forcefully toward the dragon.

The blade spun through the air. Despite seeing it coming, the dragon didn't move — and the sword pierced its remaining eye.

The beast howled in pain as the sword began absorbing its magic.

Nova lay there, utterly exhausted and spent, bleeding from countless wounds and with broken bones. It all now depended on fate — whether the sword drained the dragon's life force completely or if the dragon managed to tear it free.

Suddenly, a colossal draconic roar startled Nova back from the brink of unconsciousness. He turned toward the dragon and felt his blood turn to ice.

A massive black magic formation, exuding a decaying, malevolent aura, had appeared beneath the dragon.

And the worst part — the dragon's eyes were healed. It clutched the Demon Dweller Sword in one claw.

Nova closed his eyes.

So… do dragons like their meals raw or roasted?

A moment passed.

No searing pain. No crushing death.

Nova cracked one eye open and saw the impossible: the dragon wasn't striking him. It raised the sword high — and plunged it into the black formation.

The formation cracked.

A deafening crack echoed through the cavern, followed by a hiss as the malevolent aura recoiled. The magic formation shattered in a burst of violet light.

The dragon turned to Nova.

And it spoke. In a voice like rolling thunder.

"You… freed me."

Nova collapsed fully then, unconscious before the words fully registered.

The last thing he heard was the dragon's massive bulk collapsing beside him.

And the world went dark.
