Marvel: The Amazing Spider-Man in the Multiverse

Chapter 48: Chapter 48: Nick Fury

Peter Parker was a little out of sorts.

Not only because the person he was looking for suddenly appeared before him, but also because he once again realized what it meant for "your knowledge of the plot to be completely useless."

In the more well-known comic universes, Silk's story is primarily related to the Spider-Verse. To make a long story short, to avoid being hunted by the villain Morlun, Cindy was hidden in a facility for ten years, then released by Spider-Man when he learned about it.

This had absolutely no relation to the current situation where Cindy Moon had joined SHIELD and become a SHIELD agent.

"Kids these days don't know how to handle problems correctly. They get superpowers and don't tell the government, don't get debriefed, then get trained by professionals to master their abilities."

Nick Fury walked over with a glass in hand, seemingly with no intention of drinking the liquor. Peter, meanwhile, stared at Cindy for a moment, not because she was exceptionally pretty, but because, to his knowledge, a meeting between Spider-Man and Silk would immediately trigger a rush of hormones between them.

But in reality, there was no reaction at all. Peter shrugged. That was fine too.

"They just slap on a circus costume and then rush onto the streets to fight thugs, completely disregarding the possibility of being riddled with bullets."

"Actually," Peter retorted, "I've received training, and I wasn't at a disadvantage just now. Sorry, Cindy, no offense."

Cindy had already sat in a corner, showing no visible reaction, but Nick Fury wasn't about to let him off the hook.

"Oooh, think you're hot stuff, huh? Dealt with a locksmith, a famous international assassin, and a... whole swarm of spiders all within half a month."

Nick Fury's words made Peter realize he had indeed been through so much in just half a month. After speaking, Nick Fury lost interest.

"Listen, you might think you're not bad, but in reality, you're far from it," Fury grumbled on. "Take that spider-monster you dealt with this morning, for instance. Did you know there was a tiny, still-living spider hidden inside one of the corpses?"

"?!"

"See? You're still new to this, you don't know a lot of things. The Avengers... they think highly of you, but they always have their own matters to attend to..."

Peter realized what Nick Fury was there for.

"I'm guessing you're about to offer me a SHIELD gym membership discount, but I'm sorry, I don't have time for your gym membership."

"SHIELD can make you better, do things the Avengers can't help you with, turn you into—the Ultimate Spider-Man."

The offer was actually quite good, truly. SHIELD could provide him with ample equipment support, backup, and a more flexible communication network than the Avengers. If not for the many events in this universe not aligning with the MCU universe, he would have seriously considered it.

But for now, unless Peter could rule out SHIELD being thoroughly infiltrated by Hydra, as in the movies, there was no way he would join SHIELD.

"No thanks, I'm used to working alone. Even the Avengers just asked me to house-sit for them." Peter finished, then came up with a clumsy excuse: "Besides, I had a dream that I joined SHIELD and then was eaten by a s—"

He didn't finish the word "snake," because he saw Nick Fury shake his head. Instantly, he felt his eyelids twitch.

Great, now not only did the comic plot not line up, neither did the movie plot.

No, what's with you? You know SHIELD is infiltrated by Hydra? Then why no reaction at all? Is it possible you're intentionally keeping those Hydra agents around to scam Hydra for funds?

"—eaten by a shark."

Hearing Peter change his wording, Fury took a sip of his drink as if to calm himself: "Alright, you can accept this offer anytime. I'll leave you a number. Oh, right, regarding your multiverse travels, you'll be chosen as an intern for the Baxter Building. You and Silk will meet there then."

...

That's it?

"Can I ask you a question?"

Peter suddenly spoke. Fury put down his glass and started tidying up, nodding at the same time.

"What happened to your eye? Is that okay to ask?"

Fury opened his mouth, seeming to freeze for a moment.

"Blinded by someone. It was a hostage rescue mission that couldn't have been simpler. We had already completed the mission, rescued the target."

Nick Fury recounted a story Peter had never heard: "Then, a man appeared. He killed all my agents, my protected target, and blinded one of my eyes. To this day, I don't know who that guy is, what he looks like. All I know is he has a metal arm, and the Soviets called him the Winter Soldier."

Was Fury telling the truth? Peter, who was initially skeptical, frowned. If Fury was telling the truth, it meant the Captain Marvel movie story never happened, and the Skrulls hadn't infiltrated SHIELD...

Peter Parker, deep in thought about the plot, heard Nick Fury's final warning before he left.

"Watch out for people with metal arms. Be careful of the Winter Soldier, Peter Parker."

"Your parents died at his hands."

"?! Wait, what did you say?!"

Nick Fury had already pushed open the door, walked onto the helipad, and boarded a helicopter, leaving.

Peter, who had just received this completely unexpected news, was stunned for a moment, then realized something: Nick Fury had left without taking Cindy.

"He didn't take you with him."

Cindy nodded, simply sitting on the sofa, pulling out a book and reading it. She answered without looking up: "Fury said we'll have some collaborations later, and we can get acquainted first."

"He, uh... how did you join SHIELD?"

Cindy looked up at Peter.

"My parents found out I had superpowers and called the police. Then SHIELD came to our door."

...

So you're the positive example Nick Fury was talking about earlier.

Peter sat down on a sofa not far from her, rubbing his hands: "I heard Madame Web say you can sense me? Is that true?"

"Mm-hmm, you can't?" Cindy glanced at Peter, then confirmed he couldn't: "So you didn't notice the spider swarm still had survivors. I can sense you, your distance, your location, even the strength of your life force. Those dozens of seconds you were being electrocuted were very obvious."

"Sorry."

Cindy looked up at him again.

"Why apologize?"

"Uh, for causing you trouble?"

Peter didn't know what was so funny about that, but Cindy genuinely laughed. She closed her book and explained briefly: "It doesn't affect my life much. It's just like... always knowing where my phone is. It's that spider swarm, constantly breeding, that really disgusts me."

"Alright, my turn to ask questions." Cindy interrupted Peter's next topic: "I've watched a lot of your combat footage and learned many of your fighting styles. After I attacked you just now, according to your habit, you should have fired webs at me. Why did you throw a chair instead?"

"My web-shooter is broken. I can't shoot webs."

Then Peter saw a confused expression on Cindy's face.

"So you can't even sense where I am, and you can't even shoot webs yourself?"
