Chapter 36: Chapter 36: Theme Day (2)
In America, at the start of every school year, there's a Homecoming event, usually held on a weekend.
The Monday to Friday of that week is designated as a warm-up Theme Day. The activities typically involve a different theme each day, requiring students to decorate the school and dress up accordingly, as well as participate in activities like signature walls or graffiti.
Then, on Friday, there's the Homecoming football game, and on Saturday, the Homecoming dance. The stated purpose of these activities might be to help new students integrate into campus life and older students to feel a sense of belonging to the school.
But in reality, it always just turns into playtime.
"I wasn't intentionally trying to be an outsider; I just didn't know who to dress up as. You know? When I looked up female superheroes or villains online, the costumes—my dad wouldn't even tolerate them, let alone me."
Gwen walked alongside Peter, complaining about why most female superheroes' outfits were so revealing. With costumes like that, Chief George would never spend money on a cosplay outfit for Gwen.
She and Peter were among the few who were dressed somewhat normally. The only difference was that Peter's character wore regular clothes, while Gwen simply couldn't get a costume.
"And then you know what they'd say. Me, standing alone amidst a bunch of people in flashy costumes, ugh! It'd be so awkward."
"You could have asked me beforehand; maybe I could have recommended something."
"Good idea, why didn't I think of that?"
"If anyone asks you which superhero you're playing, just say you're 'Wolf Girl'."
"Who's that?"
"Uh, from the same show as my character."
Gwen had no idea what character that was, but she didn't press it. Peter, meanwhile, glanced behind him. He could feel someone watching him; his spider-sense hadn't stopped tingling.
Karl King again? He's really fixated on me now, but why? Is he suspecting I'm Spider-Man? He witnessed the spider biting me on the neck. He saw the whole thing.
Is he trying to confirm it and then what? Connect with some villain organization? ...
"Peter? Peter!"
"Huh? Oh, sorry, I was still thinking about Karl King."
Although not entirely accurate, Peter still apologized and then asked Gwen: "What were you saying?"
"I was saying, do you want to come with me to pick out an outfit after school? I originally thought Theme Day would only last one day, but it turns out it's going to be this long."
"Uh..."
Seeing Peter's hesitation, Gwen raised an eyebrow: "What, do you have somewhere else to go?"
"Hard to say... depends on the news."
He was still planning to use the Avengers Tower's computer and J.A.R.V.I.S. to analyze Karl King's recent behavior. If he really suspected Peter was Spider-Man, Peter would have to find a way to counter him.
"Are you hiding something from me? You've been so mysterious since high school; we barely walk to and from school together anymore."
Gwen looked at Peter, who was zoning out again, and couldn't help but ask. Peter quickly waved his hand: "No, absolutely not, don't worry. If I had something going on, I'd definitely tell you."
"Then it's settled, you're coming with me to buy clothes today."
"Alright..."
Peter, having somewhat appeased Gwen, continued observing the campus with her. Due to the broadness of the superhero theme and the diversity of costumes, the entire school was actually filled with a strangely joyful atmosphere. Besides the tight-fitting cosplay costumes and hardcore individuals like Harry, who brought an electric wheelchair, there was another way to cosplay superheroes: mascot suits.
And it was one thing for someone to wear a Sonic mascot suit, but why were there Pikachus? Can that really be considered a superhero?
Of course, there were some familiar faces around, like Jessica, the senior. Her costume was a perfectly standard Sherlock Holmes: deerstalker hat, double-breasted coat, shoulder cape—a textbook Sherlock Holmes at a glance.
"Hey, Peter. Oh, hey, Doctor."
Jessica clearly recognized who Peter was dressed as. Conversely, facing such an easily recognizable costume, Peter couldn't help but ask: "Are you sure you're a superhero right now? You're just dressed as... Sherlock Holmes."
"Hey, Parker! Of course Sherlock Holmes counts as a superhero, why wouldn't he?"
After complaining, Jessica finally noticed Gwen and happily said: "Hi, I'm Jessica, president of the Detective Club. Peter is a member of our club."
"Hey, I'm Gwen. We're... friends."
While making their brief introductions, Peter again felt Karl King's gaze. He decided to switch strategies now and not give Karl King any feedback; he'd let him continue thinking his stealth was perfect. Peter wanted to see what Karl King was really up to.
But Karl King was already starting to doubt the correctness of his answer. Peter Parker had nothing strange about him; his locker didn't even have a Spider-Man costume, and Parker hadn't noticed him.
Torn, Karl King began to wonder how to resolve these issues. He was planning to follow Peter after school today to see if he was the supposed Spider-Man, but he unexpectedly found a video on his phone.
It was a recording of Spider-Man helping ordinary people and beating up thugs. That wasn't important. What was important was that it had just been posted, and Spider-Man was wearing his new suit. Both his movements and every other angle looked perfect.
All of this left Karl King utterly confused. Could Peter Parker really not be Spider-Man? Had he really been wrong? Had that spider not given Peter Parker powers after all?
The one who posted the video and impersonated Spider-Man was, of course, the Chameleon. With Quentin Beck's help, he completed another excellent performance, and this time, he was fully dressed as a superhero. To prevent the Punisher from suddenly appearing and killing everyone, this performance was actually handled entirely by Quentin, using projections to transform a warehouse into a street and then cordon it off. He planned to lure Spider-Man to that specific building, and there, it would be Spider-Man's end.
The thought of the humiliation Spider-Man had inflicted on him made Chameleon take a deep breath. But Quentin Beck didn't think that way. He thought of Spider-Man, wondering why the other party knew his name, and more importantly, something else.
Quentin knelt before the large fish tank, muttering to himself.
"Infrared vision... infrared... is infrared light also light?"
