Chapter 116: Chapter 116: Hammer Industries's Solicitation
Though Emma Frost and Clarice refrained from verbal responses, their eye-rolls and skeptical expressions conveyed their feelings with perfect clarity.
Richard sighed helplessly at their reaction. He wasn't particularly surprised—their disbelief seemed entirely reasonable. In their position, he wouldn't have believed such an outlandish story either.
Unlike Emma and Clarice's evident skepticism, Natasha, Susan, and Sharon maintained composed demeanors. Though they'd only learned today that Richard could extract them from the zombie universe, they weren't strangers to the names Emma Frost and Clarice.
Shortly after establishing their intimate relationships with Richard, they had inquired about other women in his life. Richard had candidly revealed Emma and Clarice's existence, withholding nothing.
Under the scrutinizing gazes of Emma and Clarice, Richard retrieved his phone from his system space, placed it on the table, and offered: "Natasha and Susan's contact information is stored in there. If you don't believe me, call and ask their whereabouts."
Both Emma and Clarice frowned simultaneously at the device. After several contemplative seconds, Emma broke the silence: "Are they genuinely from alternative universes?"
"Yes," Richard replied measured. "They come from a parallel universe devoid of mutants where a zombie virus has devastated civilization."
Upon hearing his explanation, Emma and Clarice exchanged meaningful glances, silently communicating their thoughts.
Witnessing this wordless exchange, Richard found himself frowning. When did their relationship become so harmonious?
Though Clarice had resided at the manor for several months and had accepted Emma's presence, they had never truly developed a friendship, let alone become close confidantes.
Their relationship more closely resembled neighbors sharing a community with minimal daily interaction—cordial but distant.
"Have you slept together?" Emma asked bluntly after her silent consultation with Clarice.
"Yes," Richard admitted without hesitation.
For a Transmigrator, cultivating a harem seemed perfectly natural. Even as someone who hadn't technically "transmigrated" in the traditional sense, he saw nothing objectionable about male desire. There exists no man without desire! The genes for complete disinterest had been eliminated through evolutionary processes long ago.
In his assessment, desire was intrinsic to masculinity—the only variable being whether one encountered compatible partners.
"What do you intend to do with them?" Emma pressed. "What happens when they inevitably encounter their counterparts in this reality?"
"Whatever happens, happens," Richard replied casually. "It's no significant concern."
"Aren't you worried about others discovering their extradimensional origins?" Clarice interjected quickly.
"There's nothing to fear," Richard responded. "Seventy or eighty years ago, humanity refused to acknowledge mutants' existence. Now, mutants are universally recognized. If people learn about parallel universes, they'll simply accept another layer of reality."
Richard had contemplated this issue thoroughly before bringing Natasha, Susan, and Sharon back from the zombie universe. Public awareness of parallel realities seemed largely inconsequential—knowledge alone didn't confer the ability to travel between dimensions.
If any complications arose, they would likely involve the reactions of this universe's Natasha, Susan, and Sharon. However, even if they objected to their doppelgängers' presence, Richard remained unconcerned.
After hearing his reasoning, neither Emma nor Clarice pursued the matter further. Though the new arrivals meant additional women in the manor, they had mentally prepared for this eventuality.
Study Room, Second Floor, Silver Manor.
"If you wish to meet your counterparts in this universe," Richard advised Natasha, Susan, and Sharon, "simply inform me directly and I'll arrange it. Don't attempt to approach them independently, or you risk being mistaken for a mutant called Mystique."
Mystique? All three women displayed identical expressions of confusion.
"Mystique is a mutant capable of transforming into anyone at will," Richard explained. "Her metamorphosis extends beyond mere appearance—voice, fingerprints, retinal patterns, everything becomes identical to the original."
Are there many mutants with such abilities? Though they'd learned early about this universe's mutant population, the women remained largely uninformed about specific mutant capabilities.
"I'll have information compiled about this world's mutants and your counterparts to help you better understand this reality," Richard continued. "If you require additional details, you can approach either me or Emma."
The three women nodded in unison.
"Very well. Please go downstairs and rest. If you need anything, contact either myself or Emma."
After receiving these instructions, Natasha, Susan, and Sharon departed without further comment.
Richard watched them leave before approaching the study window to contemplate the view outside.
One week later. Training Ground, Silver Manor.
Richard, transformed into his True Demon Form, conducted his daily "Vergil Integration" training regimen.
Since returning to his home universe, he had awakened the Vergil template and established three distinct daily training protocols:
Project Sephiroth
Project Superboy-Prime
Project Vergil
Each program corresponded to different skills and mutant power exercises. The Sephiroth regimen contained the most extensive training elements, while the Superboy-Prime protocol featured the simplest requirement.
In fact, Project Superboy-Prime included only a single training component: sunbathing.
This seemingly peculiar activity represented the entirety of Superboy-Prime conditioning. The character's powers—heat vision, freeze breath, super strength, Super Speed, Enhanced Durability—all stemmed from his Kryptonian physiology. The most effective method for enhancing Kryptonian capabilities involved direct solar absorption.
Though this might render the Superboy-Prime protocol somewhat comical in appearance, it provided the optimal approach for strengthening Kryptonian attributes.
After training in True Demon Form for nearly three hours, Richard finally relinquished the transformation, reverting to his normal human appearance. After fusing the separated Yamato with Masamune, he returned the integrated weapon to his system space.
Using teleportation, he departed the training ground and materialized in his second-floor bedroom. He removed his clothing and entered the bathroom alone. Lying in the bathtub, he contemplated his forthcoming plans.
A week has passed since my return—time for an excursion.
Throughout the previous seven days, he hadn't left the manor once, dividing his time between daily training sessions and "in-depth exchanges" with Emma, Natasha, and the others.
Though somewhat decadent, he had to admit the lifestyle offered considerable comfort.
After enjoying a relaxing hot bath, Richard rose and returned to the bedroom to don fresh attire. Just as he prepared to leave and ask Susan if she wished to accompany him to an evening social gathering, the system unexpectedly issued a new directive:
[Mission: One-Winged Angel (III)]
[Mission content: Defeat the Frost Giant King Laufey and the Fire Giant Surtur]
[Mission Reward: Increase Sephiroth template fusion by 10%]
[Task time limit: 3 months]
Reviewing the mission information before him, Richard's brow furrowed slightly.
The system's sudden task issuance didn't particularly surprise him—its assignments typically materialized without warning. However, he hadn't anticipated a reward of 10% template fusion. Previously, he'd assumed system rewards would be limited to specific skills and abilities from template characters, not direct increases to fusion percentages.
Though unexpected, he harbored no objections to the assignment. Even without this directive, he'd already contemplated confronting Frost Giant King Laufey and Fire Giant Surtur. Moreover, he maintained significant interest in the frost giant artifact "Winter Casket" and Surtur's "Eternal Flame"—both currently secured within Odin's treasury.
While these artifacts now constituted Odin's war trophies, Richard's fascination remained undiminished.
Dismissing the information panel, he left his bedroom and sought out Susan Storm.
"Join me tonight for a social gathering," he proposed casually.
"What sort of event?" Susan inquired immediately.
"Nothing extraordinary—just a conventional dinner party hosted by a wealthy New Yorker," Richard explained. "You've been in this universe for a week now. It's time to introduce your existence to the outside world."
Throughout the past week, Susan, Natasha, and Sharon had rarely ventured beyond the manor, instead absorbing information about this reality through intelligence gathered by the Hellfire Club.
After brief consideration, Susan nodded. "Alright, I'll accompany you. Should I wear formal attire?"
"The decision is entirely yours," Richard replied.
"I understand," Susan acknowledged.
7:00 PM.
Richard piloted a black Rolls-Royce Phantom from the manor grounds, accompanied by Susan wearing an elegant deep-V backless evening gown in dark blue. They headed toward Manhattan's glittering skyline.
Though Richard had maintained a low public profile recently, invitations continued arriving at the manor with remarkable frequency—earnest requests for his attendance at dinner parties, galas, and various social functions.
While the invitations remained plentiful, Richard accepted very few. Most received polite but firm declinations.
"Who's hosting tonight's event?" Susan asked during their drive.
"An arms dealer named Justin Hammer," Richard answered evenly. "The founder of Hammer Industries—Stark Industries' primary competitor."
Though Justin Hammer existed in this universe, the events depicted in Iron Man 2 had never materialized here. Furthermore, after Stark Industries shuttered its weapons division and terminated military contracts, Hammer Industries had successfully supplanted Stark as the US military's principal supplier.
Richard had encountered Justin Hammer several times previously, forming neither favorable nor unfavorable impressions. His sole complaint involved Hammer's persistent attempts to recruit him to Hammer Industries.
Such interest wasn't surprising. Despite Richard's strained relationship with government authorities, numerous weapons manufacturers actively pursued his expertise. Hammer Industries represented just one among many.
To entice him, these arms companies—Hammer Industries included—had demonstrated remarkable generosity: offers of 10% annual profit shares, board director positions, stock packages worth hundreds of millions, and various other incentives.
Despite these attractive propositions, Richard declined consistently. Money, beyond certain thresholds, represented mere numerical abstractions. Moreover, he faced no financial shortfalls. Even if he had, he wouldn't succumb to corporate courtship from entities like Hammer Industries.
If financial needs arose, extracting resources from the US government seemed more direct. Should they refuse, they could experience firsthand the implicit threat posed by a humanoid nuclear deterrent.
Thirty minutes later.
Richard and Susan arrived at the hotel hosting the evening's gathering. After parking before the entrance, Richard exited first, immediately drawing the attention of assembled entertainment reporters.
Recognizing him, journalists raised their cameras, frantically capturing his rare public appearance. Since his previous live interview, Richard had seldom attended functions hosted by New York's social elite.
Though he'd briefly surfaced in San Francisco—publicly eliminating Shang-Chi and an associate—his appearance had proven too fleeting for substantial coverage. He'd departed with Ying Li before San Francisco reporters could fully mobilize.
While reporters photographed Richard, Susan emerged from the vehicle in her striking dark blue evening gown, instantly capturing all observers' attention.
The Invisible Woman?
Stunned expressions swept across reporters, fellow guests, and hotel staff alike. As they struggled to comprehend why Susan Storm accompanied Richard, his subsequent action elicited even greater astonishment.
Under their collective gaze, Richard calmly approached Susan, extended his right arm, and encircled her slender waist with casual confidence.
Tomorrow's headlines are secured!
Noting that Susan offered no resistance to Richard's embrace, this singular thought resonated among the journalists simultaneously. Though they couldn't determine when Richard and Susan's relationship had developed such intimacy, one certainty emerged—their public appearance together would dominate tomorrow's front pages.
Immediately, a particular name materialized in their minds: Mr. Fantastic.
Reed Richards's romantic interest in Susan Storm wasn't merely public knowledge—it had become something of a cultural punchline. Though Richards had never formally confirmed his feelings, his affection for Susan remained transparently obvious to even casual observers.
Beyond this, Richards had endured considerable public ridicule for his unsuccessful pursuit of Susan Storm. Major entertainment publications throughout New York had conducted extensive street interviews and surveys exploring this dynamic.
Questions like "Why do you think Mr. Fantastic failed to win the Invisible Woman's affection?" and "Could Mr. Richards's elastic abilities cause unexpected physical complications?" had circulated throughout the city.
While Mr. Fantastic undeniably held status as a respected superhero, contemporary society's insatiable appetite for entertainment meant that no public figure—superhero, president, or otherwise—remained exempt from becoming fodder for amusement and mockery.
