Marvel: Master Of Role-Playing

Chapter 183: Aquaman’s Close Call

"Wait... what did you just say..."

Logan felt something was wrong after hearing Reid's words. But before he could say anything, the battle reignited.

A wave of invisible force surged from Onslaught's body. In an instant, the surrounding ruins were flattened. Broken walls and shattered debris crumbled into floating dust.

The crushing power kept spreading outward, tearing through everything.

"You should get clear." Reid spoke calmly, then kicked Logan away without hesitation. The very next second, that invisible force slammed into him. His regular clothes were shredded instantly under the pressure, leaving him completely exposed.

"Great… forgot to make myself a combat suit."

Since Reid had always operated from the shadows, he never thought to create a proper battle outfit. Before gaining Martian Manhunter's powers, he at least had an armor modeled after Luthor's suit. But after inheriting the Martian's strength, even that thing had become useless junk.

With the current level of technology, not even Luthor's intellect could build something strong enough to match the raw power of the Martian Manhunter.

And so, this was the result.

Aquaman stood solidly nearby, tanking the impact from Onslaught's burst without a scratch on him. Meanwhile, Reid's clothes had completely disintegrated.

"Eh... whatever. No one saw."

He sighed helplessly. The awkwardness passed in a blink, and he immediately launched a counterattack. In a flash, he appeared beneath Onslaught and drove his fist straight into the man's chest.

If this had happened earlier, the mutant would have had no choice but to dodge. Even with magnetic powers, there wasn't any metal nearby strong enough to block Reid's attack. His only option would've been to teleport away.

But this time, it was different. A telekinetic shield, far stronger than anything Jean had ever created before, materialized in front of Onslaught and caught the punch.

Boom!

The impact was absorbed by the barrier, but the soundwave from the collision still blasted Logan off his feet again.

In a battle of this scale, it didn't matter that he no longer had adamantium bones. Even if he still did, there was little he could do here.

Then, he spotted someone else.

Jean had also been thrown aside by the shockwave and landed not far from him.

Only, her body, which had looked shriveled and lifeless just moments ago, was now full of energy again. She had returned to her original appearance.

'No way...'

Logan recalled what he'd heard during his time back at the academy.

People had noticed a change in Jean. Her personality had become colder, more distant, but the impression she'd left on others still remained. More than once, he had overheard people calling her the most promising mutant at the school.

Now, seeing her recover from that drained state, he couldn't help but wonder if she was hiding some kind of dormant power all along.

Reid had told him to try waking Rogue's consciousness. But Logan knew, during a clash like this, there was no way he could manage that. If it were that easy to break through a telepathic suppression with words alone, Charles would never have been seen as a threat by humanity.

Logan still wanted to save Rogue. But the only way he could do that now was by finding someone else who could help. And Jean, who clearly had some power left in her, was the best option.

With that thought, he forced out his bone claws and, keeping his eyes on the violent shockwaves from the battle ahead, began dragging himself inch by inch toward her.

Back on the battlefield, Onslaught was now using the telekinetic powers he had taken from Jean to successfully block Reid's frontal assault. But almost immediately, he had to contend with Aquaman's attack coming from the side.

Even while channeling telekinesis, the mutant still had enough focus to use his magnetic manipulation. The countless metal fragments, which had been pulverized into fine dust earlier by telekinetic force, were now swirling around him, forming a powerful barrier to block Aquaman's strikes.

And as time passed, the Atlantean King's movements began to slow.

"Something's wrong… my body…"

Aquaman wasn't a clone, but rather a summoned servant. He didn't have full access to Reid's diverse range of abilities, so his reaction speed was slightly lacking.

As such, when he realized what was happening, it was already too late.

A massive fist, formed from compressed metal shavings, came straight at him.

Boom!

Aquaman was sent flying by Onslaught's iron fist. The moment it connected, the giant metal construct exploded into a cloud of metallic dust.

Reid found out the sudden change in Aquaman and turned his gaze toward him. It didn't take long for him to spot the issue.

Those floating metal fragments in the air had been subtly entering the man's body through his breathing since the very beginning of the battle. And that process had started long before Reid even arrived, right when Aquaman first began fighting Onslaught.

That also explained why the mutant had chosen to use unstable, hard-to-control iron dust instead of solid metal. It wasn't a random decision. It was all part of a trap.

By now, the iron content in Aquaman's body had reached a dangerous threshold, and with Onslaught's immense power, he could no longer resist the force building up inside him.

"Ahh!"

Sure enough, Aquaman, who had been blasted away, still couldn't get back on his feet. His limbs and body felt as heavy as lead, and a sense of dread crept over him.

"Boss!"

Even with the pride of the King of Atlantis, he was forced to cry out for help.

And Reid responded at once.

Aquaman couldn't fully sense or control the changes in his body, nor did he have x-ray vision to see what was happening inside him.

But Reid could see everything clearly. The reason he couldn't move was because the iron particles inside his body were rapidly making their way toward his head. If it continued, once his brain was packed with metallic matter, Onslaught wouldn't even need psychic abilities, he could simply induce brain death.

"You're not getting past me!"

Onslaught quickly stepped in to block Reid, determined to stop him from saving Aquaman.

But his interference wasn't enough to halt the man's advance. With a subtle phase shift, he passed right through the mutant and entered Aquaman's body.

Using possession ability, Reid infiltrated his system from within. There, he destroyed all the metallic fragments that had been inhaled, stopping them before they could reach Aquaman's brain and bring about his death.

"Arthur, get ready to drown him."

"You've made your decision?"

Before leaving the man's body, Reid told him his decision directly.

"This is no time to worry about collateral damage. Onslaught's power is starting to show signs of going out of control."

Then, as he exited Aquaman's form, he drove his fist hard into the ground.

The impact was so powerful it cracked the earth beneath them wide open. Through that rupture, Aquaman sensed something familiar—the flow of water.

It was the underground water vein, connected to the ocean.

In the blink of an eye, seawater surged up through the fissure, rising rapidly into massive waves that came crashing toward Onslaught.
