Chapter 32: Chapter 31: Caubert

"No, I don't like being domesticated. I'll make my own way," Tom, the blue cat, replied after some thought.

"Well, if our target shows up and we confirm his identity, this package of food is yours," Big White shrugged. While slightly disappointed, he respected Tom's choice.

Their journey had been smooth and quick, not too late considering the robber's habits. He might be out stealing again.

Having gathered the necessary information, Big White stood up and looked at Peter. Before he could speak, Peter chimed in.

"I see good news written all over your face."

"You're right. According to Tom, there's someone who frequently runs through here wearing sunglasses."

"That's a pretty noticeable trait, especially in these dark, deserted alleys," Peter observed. In such places, animals could quickly identify distinct humans without forming chaotic memories.

"So, is he here now?" Peter's demeanor turned serious.

"Yes, but he's not back yet. If Tom's right, we just have to wait," Big White nodded, taking out dried fish from his backpack and feeding it to Tom.

"So, my part's done. The rest is up to you."

"No problem, it's better if you don't get involved," Peter's expression grew somber as he prepared to face the man responsible for Uncle Ben's death.

Meanwhile, a robbery was taking place at a gas station convenience store on 19th Street, parallel to 17th Street. By the time the police arrived, the thief had vanished into the shadows.

Woolley Caubert, an American with a criminal past for child neglect, had served twenty-five years in prison. Once released, his record barred him from jobs. After wandering aimlessly, he fell back into gambling and turned to robbery.

He targeted convenience stores at night, believing most people, including the police, were resting. Even with a quick police response, he would have fled by then.

Two days ago, after robbing a store, he accidentally shot an elderly man while escaping. Wanted for murder, he hid in an abandoned boxing gym, only venturing out today due to financial desperation.

The remote Uptown location made his thefts relatively smooth.

Turning into a dark alley, Caubert reached the iron gate, deftly unlocking it with his key. Once inside, he resecured the lock from the inside.

"Hey, man, looks like you've hit the jackpot again," a mocking voice called from above.

"Who's there!" Startled, Caubert spun around, drawing his pistol and pointing it into the dark alley.

"Up here. That gun's caused enough trouble, so I'll take it," a shadowy figure descended quickly, disarming Caubert before he could react.

"Bang!" A dull thud resounded as a blow struck Caubert's abdomen, nearly knocking him unconscious.

"Bang!" Another hit to his back sent him sprawling to the ground, gasping for air.

Peter, venting his anger, landed two solid punches before continuing.

As silence resumed, Caubert's raspy groans filled the alley.

"Who are you?" Caubert wheezed, seeing the red and blue figure before him.

"You don't need to know, but you'll feel the power of this toy," Peter aimed the pistol at him.

"No, please, no! I can change! I swear!" Caubert, fearing death, begged on his knees, his survival instinct overriding the pain.

"Bang!" Peter pulled the trigger, a spark flickering beside Caubert's head.

Caubert collapsed, fainted from shock.

Peter bound him in webbing, inspecting the star tattoo on Caubert's wrist.

After a moment's silence, he hoisted Caubert over his shoulder and headed for the gym.

"I thought you killed him," Big White noted, seeing the web-wrapped figure.

"No, we're heading to the Empire State Building," Peter replied.

"Hang on, I need to leave our hero some rewards," Big White said, pouring the remaining food from his backpack in front of Tom.

"Here's your reward. The human you feared won't bother you again. Live in peace."

"Meow!" Tom's eyes lit up at the sight of the feast, eagerly diving into it.

Big White smiled, then nodded to Peter. "Let's go. I've never seen the Empire State Building."

Peter nodded, shooting a web to leave with Caubert in tow.

Big White glanced back at Tom, still engrossed in his meal, before shooting his own web to follow Peter.

---

Caubert awoke, disoriented and in pain, unable to move. As awareness returned, he looked down at the brightly lit abyss below, a chill enveloping him in the night air.
