Chapter 33: Investigation
Gerry's house was located on the west side of town, not far from an abandoned factory.
Due to the factory's early environmental pollution, the surrounding neighbors had long since moved away, leaving only Gerry's house isolated in the area, looking empty and desolate.
Pete led everyone to Gerry's doorstep:
"This is Gerry's house."
Jino stood still, examining the house.
It was a small, two-story house with white painted walls. The wooden front door was closed, and the windows were tightly shut, making it impossible to see inside.
Lana Lang looked very agitated. The girl darted forward and began pounding on the door.
"Mrs. Ted, are you home?"
"Mrs. Ted?"
There was no answer, only Lana Lang's voice echoing around.
Lana Lang's small face was filled with anxiety. She was desperate to know if Gerry had been secretly filming her.
Bang bang bang.
The door vibrated from the knocking, and a little dust drifted down from the eaves.
Chloe sighed, hugging her arms. "I heard Gerry's father died in a mining accident. Their house hasn't been cleaned in a long time."
Lana Lang's shouts didn't elicit a response.
The house was completely silent, as if the owner had gone out.
"Move." Jino pushed Lana Lang aside with a calm expression and walked to the door.
Wham!
Jino extended his arm, his fist moving so fast it blurred into an afterimage.
The wooden door, several centimeters thick, was shattered by Jino's single punch as easily as if it were paper.
"Oh my God!"
Lana Lang stared in astonishment at the large hole in the door, unconsciously covering her mouth. She looked at Jino's arm with concern: "Won't that hurt?"
Lana Lang instinctively reached out to check Jino's arm.
"I'm fine."
Jino glanced indifferently at Lana Lang, stopping her action.
The girl sheepishly withdrew her hand, watching Jino, who seemed to feel no pain, as his right hand fumbled for the switch inside the door.
Soon, his index finger touched a cold, small object.
"Found it."
Jino gripped the doorknob. The door seemed to be locked from the inside.
Click.
Two fingers hooked onto the latch inside the house, and he pulled it out gently.
Screeeech~
The old door slowly opened with a grating sound, revealing the scene inside to everyone.
Sunlight streamed into the house from behind them, revealing many dust particles floating in the air.
A stale, decaying smell permeated the air inside, wafting out through the open door and causing a few of them to instinctively cover their noses.
Everyone walked into the house together.
"How long has it been since this place was cleaned?" Pete looked at the messy living room.
Broken lampshades were scattered haphazardly across the living room.
Overturned sofas and broken glass shards seemed to silently speak of unhappy events that had occurred here.
Moreover, Jino even caught a faint scent of blood lingering in the air.
Jino and Clark exchanged glances, both understanding each other's thoughts.
This situation didn't seem right.
"What's on the table?"
Chloe, being observant, noticed a stack of videotapes on top of the TV set-top box.
"Let's put one in and see."
Jino glanced at the TV, watching Chloe insert a videotape into the DVD player.
As the screen flickered, soon, a scene of Lana Lang and Whitney laughing during a picnic appeared on the TV.
Whoosh!
Lana Lang's face instantly turned pale. The footage of herself and her boyfriend on a picnic was clearly recorded, confirming that Gerry was the peeping tom!
Watching the two people laughing on TV, Clark's expression turned grim. He pursed his lips, walked over, and took out the videotape: "Stop watching. We need to figure out what happened here."
"No way, I'm not done watching yet." Chloe pouted, expressing her displeasure at Clark's fawning over his crush.
But she also knew they needed to track down Gerry, so she shrugged and said nothing more.
"Let's check the kitchen."
Jino's blue eyes fixed on the kitchen around the corner.
That pungent smell of blood was coming from there.
Tap, tap~
Sneakers tapped crisply on the floor.
As they got closer, a pair of women's high heels first entered Jino's sight, followed by a pair of short legs.
Jino sighed inwardly, a faint guess already forming in his mind.
Taking a few quick steps forward, above those legs was a floral dress, and a woman with wide, bulging eyes and a greenish face stared unblinkingly at the ceiling.
It wasn't that her eyes were dry; rather, her slightly swollen face and the massive wound on her abdomen proved that the woman had been dead for a long time.
Apart from the expressionless Jino, everyone else was terrified by the body lying in the kitchen.
Through the ruptured chest, bloody internal organs were visible.
Countless pools of blood stained the floor and the woman's clothes.
A faint stench of decay assailed everyone's nostrils.
Fear, fear was spreading, pervading!
Little Pete was the first to break.
The fear etched into his genes made little Pete let out a scream first. The boy's eyes rolled back, his body twitching uncontrollably as if he'd had a stroke, his arms and legs flailing as if he'd been whipped by a farmer. His eyeballs rolled up, and he neatly and decisively fainted, collapsing to the floor with a dull thud.
Chloe wasn't much better. Seeing a corpse for the first time, the woman's unseeing expression made Chloe's face turn pale, and her stomach churned.
"Ugh!"
Chloe clapped a hand over her mouth and bolted out of the kitchen with incredible speed. She didn't want to offend the dead; she was very superstitious about such things.
Soon, sounds of painful retching and crying came from outside.
Not everyone could remain composed upon seeing a corpse. Lana Lang, behind Jino, was equally terrified, instinctively wanting to find an embrace for comfort.
Then, Lana Lang's gaze unconsciously fell on Jino.
Without thinking, Lana Lang took a step forward, intending to hug Jino.
However, Jino took a step forward, avoiding the woman's embrace, and slowly walked towards the corpse, even crouching down to carefully examine the wound.
It was as if it wasn't a corpse, but some interesting textbook.
Left with no choice, a pale-faced Lana Lang turned and threw herself into Clark's arms.
"Clark, I'm scared."
Though equally afraid, Clark still puffed out his chest, trying to maintain his composure and not embarrass himself in front of his crush.
"Ji-Jino, maybe we should leave?"
Clark swallowed, his heart pounding erratically. He felt as though Mrs. Ted's eyes were secretly watching him, constantly twitching.
"Why leave? Just because of a corpse?"
Jino scoffed, breaking off a piece of wood and gripping it in his hand.
These young people's minds were still too fragile. If they had witnessed him blowing Jeremy's head off, would they have been scared to death?
"But if you're scared, you can wait in the living room."
