Although the battle in Houston didn't last long, it caused a great deal of chaos.
As for casualties, Mike and his group cleaned up quickly. While there were some, the number was minimal.
Even so, the incident caused a sensation, dominating headlines across major news outlets and sparking a storm of discussion online.
Coincidentally, Coulson was already in Houston. After reporting the situation to his director, he was instructed to remain there and manage the aftermath.
Shortly afterward, Nick Fury gave Mike a call. After asking a few questions about the situation, he returned to handling S.H.I.E.L.D. business.
Lately, he had been acting quite mysteriously.
As for Mike's family, due to the heightened tension in Houston, they decided to leave the city altogether and take a trip to a nearby town.
Carrie, having gained her freedom, bid farewell to the three of them and immediately headed to New York.
From Raven and Gwen, she had learned a few basic details about Clark—where he worked, his phone number, and so on.
Dragging a small suitcase behind her, Carrie left the airport alone. After hailing a cab, she headed straight for the Daily Planet.
This time, she didn't wear her old business suit. Instead, she had dressed up beautifully.
She wore a fresh floral dress that gave off a breezy, natural vibe. Her exposed shoulders and lovely collarbones added a touch of allure, and her white high-heeled sandals further accentuated her already impressive figure, making her appear even taller and more elegant.
Carrie casually ran her fingers through the golden hair draped over her shoulders, then took out a compact mirror. Sitting in the backseat, she checked her makeup. Once satisfied that there were no flaws, she tucked the mirror into her backpack and let out a gentle breath.
Perfect.
She was about to see him—and she was filled with anticipation.
The driver glanced at Carrie through the rearview mirror, swallowed hard, and asked, "First time here, beautiful?"
Carrie nodded slightly.
The driver's eyes lit up. "Here's my number. If you ever need a ride, just give me a call. I'm always available."
"Okay."
Carrie glanced at the number but immediately pushed it from her mind.
A few minutes later, the cab pulled up in front of the Daily Planet. After Carrie got out with her suitcase, the driver called out to her.
"You're really beautiful—be careful when you're out and about."
Carrie waved without turning back and walked straight into the building.
The moment she stepped inside, her striking appearance was like a breath of fresh air, instantly attracting attention.
She approached the front desk and smiled as she explained the reason for her visit.
The receptionist glanced at her while smiling and dialed Clark's number.
"Please wait a moment. He'll be down shortly."
"Thank you."
Carrie smiled softly and stood quietly to the side with her suitcase.
A few minutes later, Clark came downstairs. The receptionist nodded toward Carrie and whispered teasingly, "Nice one, Clark."
Clark paused, noticing the playful glint in her eyes. He gave a helpless smile.
As he walked toward Carrie and saw her from behind, he frowned slightly. Did he know her?
"Hi, were you looking for me?"
Clark's deep, magnetic voice echoed, and Carrie's body immediately tensed.
She had already sensed his arrival but didn't know how to greet him. After all, the last time they saw each other, things had gotten rather... intense.
Clark had gently pinned her to the ground, and she, in turn, had lovingly buried him in the dirt...
Carrie turned around nervously and offered Clark a slightly stiff smile.
"Long time no see, Clark."
Clark furrowed his brow. Though his eyes were cautious, they mostly reflected surprise.
"You came back? How did you find this place?"
Hearing his questions, Carrie showed no sign of impatience.
Letting go of the suitcase she'd been holding onto, she said, "I met Mr. Kent in Houston. I got the information from him."
Houston?
The monster attack?
She met his father. If she had any ill intentions, his dad probably would've purified her on the spot.
Several thoughts flashed through Clark's mind before he asked, "So, why are you here?"
Carrie's cheeks flushed slightly. "I came to find you. I…"
"Hey, Clark! We're supposed to head out!"
A lively voice interrupted her. A confident-looking woman with her hair tied back walked out briskly.
"Who's this?"
Lois glanced at Carrie with a questioning look and stood beside Clark, handing him a camera.
"Carrie. She's a classmate of Clark's."
Carrie graciously extended her hand toward Lois. Though her smile was radiant, a flicker of coldness flashed in her eyes.
Lois paused for a moment before reaching out to shake her hand.
"Lois, Clark's colleague."
Their eyes met, and in that instant, both women keenly sensed the subtle hostility in each other's gaze.
They both liked Clark.
Once that realization hit, their smiles grew even more dazzling.
"So, what brings you to Clark?" Lois asked gently, but Carrie inwardly sneered.
What business I have with him—does that have anything to do with you? Do I need to tell you?
Carrie instinctively ignored Lois, pulled out her phone, and dialed a number. As Clark's phone began to ring, she smiled and said, "That's my number."
"My number—how did you…?"
"Oh, I got it from Gwen and Mr. Kent," Carrie replied casually, twirling a lock of her golden hair. Her smile deepened as she turned to Lois and added, "Mr. Kent is such a lovely person. You really should meet him sometime."
"I already have," Lois replied, smiling sweetly. "Mr. Kent's cooking is quite impressive."
Carrie's smile faltered for a second.
Damn it, I'm falling behind.
Noticing Carrie's expression, Lois chuckled inwardly and said to Clark, "Let's go. We've got an interview to get to."
With that, she grabbed Clark's arm and started walking out.
Clark gave Carrie a polite nod while holding his camera. "Sorry, I've got to go. Let's talk another time."
Carrie responded with a cheerful gesture, mimicking a phone call.
"Call me."
Clark hesitated briefly, then nodded.
Carrie was a dangerous woman. He needed to find out exactly why she was looking for him. Keeping in touch was probably a good idea.
Seeing the look in Clark's eyes, Lois pressed her lips together. A sense of unease crept into her heart.
Meanwhile, back inside the newsroom, Carrie's expression darkened. A bone-chilling aura radiated from her.
She had nearly crushed that woman named Lois just moments ago.
But doing so would have destroyed any chance she had with Clark.
She wasn't foolish enough to make that mistake.
After a brief pause, she walked up to the front desk and smiled.
"Hi there, gorgeous. Is your paper still hiring?"
