Chapter 5: Chapter 5: Lab Rat
Once Fury leaves the room, Ray puts his forehead on the table, the cold metal cooling him down somewhat. He stays there for a few minutes before another agent enters the room and asks Ray to follow him.
Ray slowly stands up and follows behind the agent while walking fairly slow, a perpetual aura of sadness surrounding him. They get back into the elevator and go up a few more floors before exiting the elevator in what appears to be the lobby of a hotel.
The agent walks up to the receptionist's desk in front of them and gets a keycard that he hands to Ray, explaining that it will be his room key and that he shouldn't lose it.
The agent then brings him down another hallway and leads him to a door, beckoning him to use the keycard on the scanner next to the door. Ray looks at the keycard for a moment before holding it up to the scanner, the red light on it turning green as the door unlocks.
The agent opens the door for him and Ray walks in, his depressed mood improving somewhat upon seeing the expensive apartment complete with its own kitchen, living room, dining room, and a large glass window overlooking the city.
Before the agent leaves, he shows Ray where everything is along with the master bedroom where he can take a shower. Ray tries his best to smile as he thanks the agent for his time, the agent accepts his thanks before leaving the room.
Ray walks over to the master bath and takes a long, hot shower, the sweat and grime from the most hectic day of his life falling off his body from the expensive soaps that he rubs his body with liberally.
After drying himself off, Ray puts on a bathrobe before raiding the fridge, making himself a ham and cheese sandwich that gets sucked down his throat like it's a vacuum.
He grabs a bottle of water and drinks half of it before laying down in the king sized bed in the Master bedroom, he closes his eyes and goes through his memories once more, finding a new set of memories that aren't his own. Memories of a young boy who lived in this universe with a mutant ability that is eerily similar to Gamer's Body.
This younger him never got tired for more than a few minutes, only sleeping for maybe an hour in an entire week. Whenever he would get hurt, the wounds would vanish within the blink of an eye, never leaving even a blemish on his skin.
He was always bullied by those around him for being different, even his parents wanted him gone. But instead, they died when they were driving somewhere and a massive truck collided with their tiny car, crushing it into paste.
While the fire fighters were cleaning up the wreckage, one of them saw a hand sticking out of the metal pancake that was twitching. They quickly grabbed the metal cutter and pulled the young boy out, flabbergasted that there wasn't even a scratch on him.
Ray tosses and turns as more memories come to the surface, though soon sleep somehow manages to take him…

Meanwhile, Fury and Natasha are walking down a hallway as they head towards the meeting with the world security council.
Fury gives her a sidelong glance. "How much of his story do you think is true…"
Natasha has a thoughtful expression on her face. "It is quite hard to tell… In my opinion, he was faking it all, hoping we won't ask anymore questions. Though I highly doubt that he has the training to fake his emotions to such an extent… All in all, I would give it a seventy percent chance that he was telling the truth."
Fury nods. "I can work with that... We will keep him monitored for the time being, watching his every move to determine if he is suitable for the avengers initiative. A mutant that is hard to kill is just what we need right now."
"You are dead set on this avengers initiative, aren't you?"
Fury gives Natasha the side eye. "We need a response team, someone that can answer the threats that ordinary soldiers can't deal with. Whether it be mutants or aliens, we are hopelessly, hilariously, outmatched."
Natasha and Fury enter the elevator, she stares Fury in his eye. "With all due respect, if the boy does have the X-gene, wouldn't Charles Xavier have picked him up by now?"
The door of the elevator opens and they both start walking down another corridor.
"Why he wasn't is what we need to figure out. But for now, I have a meeting to attend while you need to get some shut-eye yourself. I can't have one of my best agents collapse from overworking themselves."
Natasha rubs her temples. "Of course sir, I will get right on that."
Fury nods before entering a very dark room and shutting the door, large panels on the walls light up one by one, revealing grayed out likenesses of the men and women on the world security council.
Fury holds in a sigh, knowing that he is going to be here for a long time.

With the bright morning light shining through his window, Ray sits up, groaning in pleasure as he stretches his body and marvels at the softness of the bed sheets. Begrudgingly, he gets up and takes a quick shower before changing into a set of clothes that seems to have been laid out for him.
He exits the master bedroom wearing a dark blue, skin tight shirt along with a pair of black dress pants and black socks. He enters the kitchen and finds some eggs as well as bacon and sausage so he goes all out, making himself a full course breakfast that soon disappears down his gullet.
After eating enough for three people, Ray still doesn't feel full. It's then that he remembers that the Gamer's Body skill affects even his need to eat and drink. So, in theory, he could go without any food or water for years and still be perfectly fine.
'If that is the case… What about dying of old age? Will I just stop aging at some point? Am I technically immortal? These are all questions that I won't know the answers to until far later in my life.'
With nothing else better to do, Ray lays down on a couch in the living room, thinking over his plans for when he returns to the lands between.
'Ok, I need to either acquire Godrick's great rune or find a rune arc ASAP. Are there any easy rune arcs to grab in Limgrave? … I can't think of any off the top of my head. Most of them are in Caelid or Liurnia if I remember… for starters, I need to find Melina and get Torrent. Then I can ride my trusty steed all the way to Caelid and grab the rune arc next to the greatsword chest.'
'Man I would love to use the greatsword but that thing requires a lot of strength and I am still not sure about what build I want to go. Without the knowledge of how sorcery or incantation casting will work for me, I am not sure about using either even if it would be better in the long run.'
Ray turns on his side. 'I really don't want to go the strength route. We have Hulk and Thor to fill in that category. My best bet would be to go dexterity and grab rivers of blood… Eh, I'm not a complete loser though, only noobs use that weapon.'
Ray sighs loudly. 'I guess I will grab some strength to start. I can always try out the low level spells and see if I like them or not… Now what strength weapon is easy to get from the beginning of the game and will be able to carry me through the early game…'
Ray contemplates for a moment. 'If I am remembering correctly, there is a merchant in the Weeping Peninsula that sells a zweihander and there is a morning star along the path to castle Morne… yea, let's start with that, I will use the morning star on enemies that can be bled and the zweihander on anything else. Along the way, I will grab the guaranteed glintstone staff drop from that noble and get glintstone pebble from Selene, giving me the option of testing out how sorceries work.'
Ray continues to strategize while relaxing on the couch for a few hours before the sound of a door bell startles him, making him jump into a seated position. After a few moments, the door opens and the same agent from yesterday walks into the room. This time Ray gets a good look at him but doesn't recognize him at all.
'Probably just a no name agent for SHIELD, though he could be a HYDRA agent…'
Ray shakes his head before standing up and following the agent to the elevator once again. This time, the elevator descends a few floors below the lobby before opening to reveal a pristine, white corridor. As they walk down the corridor, there are a few glass windows that Ray looks through, seeing various people doing exercises while doctors look over the results of their tests on computer screens.
It doesn't take long before Ray finds himself in a room nearly identical to one he just passed, only this time, there is a bald man with an eyepatch staring at him.
"Feeling better, Ray?"
Ray nods, his hands going over his head as he stretches. "That bed was wonderful, that was the best sleep I have had in years…"
Fury glances at one of the doctors in the room. "If it's alright with you, I would like to run a few tests, make sure you don't have any diseases or abnormalities…"
Ray looks at him blankly. "You want to document my mutant powers, to see if I can become a valuable asset… And the answer to that question is yes. If there is any chance of me living better than I was, I will take it."
Fury stares at him for a moment, like he is trying to bore his way into Ray's mind. "If you are going to put it so bluntly… I was thinking about adding you on as a temporary agent as long as you pass my tests. And I will need accurate information about your mutant abilities to do so."
Ray gets into a playful fighting stance. "Well what are we waiting for, Christmas? Bring on the tests…"
Fury waves at the doctors and they get right to work, one of them pulls out a syringe and rubs his arm with an antiseptic cloth over the vein. The doctor looks at him, seemingly asking for his consent for which Ray nods resolutely.
The doctor wastes no time in plunging the syringe into his arm and drawing out some blood… Only for the syringe to magically teleport away and the blood inside the vial to vanish into thin air.
The doctor looks at the syringe in confusion for a moment before trying again, getting the same result. Ray raises his eyebrow in confusion before remembering how his arm got crushed by the troll and it appeared fine a moment later.
"Huh… Looks like my body doesn't heal fast, it's basically instantaneous…"
Fury's eyebrow lowers in frustration as he realizes that it is most likely impossible for him to get a blood sample from him. He directs the doctor to try and gather skin cells, hair, or saliva, only for the same thing to happen again.
One of the doctors stares at him in wonder. "This isn't regeneration, it's like your body is returning to a perfect state every second…"
A fire starts to light in Fury's heart at the implications of this boy's ability while Ray just sighs in his head.
'So I have built-in protection from cloning and other medical BS, cool. It's a good thing I can keep my other skills hidden. HYDRA would stop at nothing to acquire the abilities that I have. Hell, they might just kidnap me anyways in the hopes of getting just a portion of what Gamer's Body can do.'
The doctors try a few more tests before Fury calls them off and instead focuses on more physical tests. He has Ray run on a treadmill with a bunch of nodes strapped to his chest, the doctors noting that his stamina seems to be working differently then they expected. Ray just goes along with all of the tests, knowing that he must build a good reputation with Fury if he wants to stay in SHIELD's care for a period of time.
Once Ray is finished with the tests he is returned to his room. Later that day, Fury looks at the condensed notes of the doctor's findings.
…
Subject: Ray Winters
X-Gene factors: instantaneous body restoration, delayed stamina recovery.
Notes: Because of the subject's restoration ability, it is impossible to acquire a sample of the subject's blood, skin, saliva, or hair. Without a DNA sample, we are unable to verify if the subject possesses the X-Gene but all signs point to this being the case.
The subject is able to suffer grievous injury with only pain as a repercussion, all signs of damage vanish so instantaneously that even recording the process at 1000X slower speed cannot film the moment of restoration.
The subject informed the researchers that there is likely a threshold of damage he can take that would result in death but this cannot be confirmed.
Even though the subject has been living in poor conditions, the subject's body has had little to no decline or improvement beyond that of a standard human. It is theorized that the subject's body cannot grow beyond a set amount, making any training of the body ineffective.
The subject has a low stamina ceiling but is able to recover from fatigue in seconds after a brief moment of inactivity. This feature seems to work on his mind as well, causing the subject to not require sleep to function. More tests will be needed to determine the limits of the subject's stamina recovery.
The subject's physical fitness is below optimal levels. More tests will be needed in order to determine how to improve the subject's body to acceptable levels.
X-Gene classification: Gamma class with potential to reach Alpha or Omega in the future.
