Marvel Disassembler

Chapter 238: MD-Chapter 237 Sergeant Barnes

Jeff suddenly felt that there was no justice in this world. Even in the legendary Asgard, there was such darkness, where a few words could put an unfortunate soul like him under house arrest. Where could he find justice in that?

As Thor's big hand reached for him, Jeff tried to dodge, but it was impossible. Thor picked him up effortlessly, and no amount of flailing or struggling made any difference. He was pitifully dragged out of Arthur's room.

Arthur closed the door and breathed a sigh of relief. Jeff, who had lingered in his Disassemble Space for so long, was finally gone. Every time Arthur looked at the blue-skinned prisoner in that Space, he felt like he was losing his mind for forgetting about him.

"So why did Thor come to see me in the first place?" Arthur blinked. Maybe Thor just wanted to chat. "If it was something important, I wouldn't have forgotten, would I?"

With that, Arthur turned his attention back to the Disassemble space. Inside was a black-clad, long-haired young man wearing a mask. This one was a real problem.

With a thought, Arthur pulled the figure out of the Disassemble Space and dropped him to the floor. He looked around, trying to find something suitable to use as a restraint, but came up empty.

He spotted a metal lamppost in the room, weighed it in his hand and found it sturdy enough. He twisted it and used it to bind the young man's hands behind his back.

"That should hold him, right?" Arthur felt slightly unsure. The man's left arm was incredibly strong, stronger than anything he'd seen before.

Too bad the "Abomination" he had used to fight Tony for the nuke was still on Earth. If he had, subduing this guy wouldn't have been a problem.

"On second thought, I should have asked Thor to leave Mjolnir behind. That hammer would keep even a god down," Arthur mused, then realized it was pointless since he couldn't lift Mjolnir himself.

While Arthur was lost in thought, the young man suddenly opened his eyes. After scanning his surroundings, he showed no sign of fear or struggle. Instead, he stared intently at Arthur.

Arthur pointed to his own face in confusion and asked. "Do you recognize me?"

The cold, indifferent stare made Arthur realize it was a pointless question. Hydra's brainwashing had been thorough; even if Steve stood in front of him, this man wouldn't recognize him, let alone Arthur.

Arthur removed the mask, revealing a familiar face. He sighed. "It's been a while, Sergeant Barnes."

"I don't know you," The man's voice was as cold as a machine without emotions.

Arthur shook his head. "No, you do know me. We escaped from a Hydra research base together, remember?"

"I have no idea what you're talking about." Bucky's tone was emotionless, without a flicker of memory.

Arthur thought for a moment before saying, "We have no reason to be enemies. In fact, we're comrades. You've been brainwashed by Hydra, which is why you don't recognize me or... Steve."

Bucky's brow furrowed slightly, but he didn't speak.

Arthur sat across from him. "So you don't remember Steve either. What about Howard Stark?"

This time Bucky didn't even react. He closed his eyes, giving off an air of complete indifference.

Arthur sighed. "You don't even remember the man you killed with your own hands?"

Bucky looked up at Arthur. "Who are you?"

"You were sent to kill me and you don't even know who I am?" Arthur smiled. "Tell me, what did Hydra tell you? Did they ever mention that I'm your comrade? That we fought side by side against Hydra? The last I heard of you was when you and Steve were sent to capture Dr. Zola and you fell into that ravine."

"We? Fought side by side?" Bucky shook his head. "That's impossible."

"There's nothing impossible about it..." Arthur thought for a moment and then sighed. "I have no proof. But there is a memorial in New York. It has a portrait of Steve and details of his life. You take up a large part of it, with records of your origins, experiences, and how you were declared dead... but I doubt you ever planned to visit it."

Arthur paused, then smiled. "Of course, even if I told you, you wouldn't believe me, would you?"

Bucky closed his eyes again and decided to ignore Arthur.

"I don't know much about brainwashing or hypnosis, and I can't imagine what you went through. But it can't have been pleasant... you know, I really should kill you."

Arthur, sitting across from Bucky like a neighbor making small talk, continued, "Howard was an interesting man. After a drink, he loved to brag. We shared similar interrogation methods, a kind of common interest. He was a good man...and so is his son. Oh, by the way, his son is Tony, Tony Stark... Iron Man."

"He must hate you." Arthur looked up. "I should turn you over to him so he can make his choice. This whole thing must weigh heavily on him. But that pain won't go away just because you're dead; in fact, it would turn into something else. That's why I don't want to hand you over. Also because we were comrades. And now I'm faced with a difficult decision..."

"My comrade was brainwashed and he killed my friend."

Arthur looked at Bucky. "Tell me, what should I do?"

After a long silence, Bucky met Arthur's eyes. "I don't know you."

"How frustrating."

Arthur laughed suddenly. "Only someone like Steve could face you like this, with endless patience. If I had that, maybe we could find a solution that would free Tony from his torment and spare you from the guilt of your past. And I don't mean the present you."

"All right, enough of that."

Arthur looked at Bucky. "Whether you're under the effects of brainwashing or have genuinely forgotten the past, at least you seem lucid now. With that clarity and calm judgment, you should at least consider everything I've said."
