Chapter 141: Chapter 141: Fury's Suspicions
Night enveloped the earth in silence...
By the Potomac River, the iconic Triskelion (headquarters of S.H.I.E.L.D.) stood facing the Washington Monument across the water, with the famous Lincoln Memorial nearby. The gleaming white Greek-style structure built of granite and marble was particularly striking...
Nick Fury strode into his office, followed by his trusted aide Coulson. Since his failed attempt to recruit Tony Stark into S.H.I.E.L.D., the one-eyed director had turned his attention to the Fantastic Four.
Unfortunately, Reed Richards preferred focusing on research over close collaboration with government agencies.
Phase One of the Avengers Initiative now faced an awkward predicament. Having finally secured approval from the World Security Council, Fury found himself struggling to recruit members... an ironic twist.
Fortunately, one piece of good news emerged. With the awakening of the war hero who had slept for seventy years, the Avengers had found their first member... Captain America, the super-soldier from WWII with unwavering willpower and noble virtues.
Government officials dismissed the outdated war hero, while the military sought to crack the secrets of the super-soldier serum. Only S.H.I.E.L.D. could shield him from these pressures, and so Steve Rogers became part of the clandestine organization.
"Captain Rogers went out today," Coulson reported upon entering the office.
The legendary figure known to every American had only recently awakened. A misunderstanding had initially caused quite a stir, but once fully conscious, Steve, true to his military nature, cooperated fully with S.H.I.E.L.D.'s examinations, including weekly psychological evaluations.
This pleased Fury immensely. Unlike the unruly Tony Stark who constantly caused headaches, Steve Rogers was the ideal soldier; willing to comply with reasonable requests, even entertaining White House officials and military personnel.
"He's the world's finest soldier. We don't need to worry about him going AWOL..." Fury settled into his black chair.
Since Stryker's failed plan, Magneto's Brotherhood had seemingly vanished, while Xavier's Institute remained quiet, easing the director's concerns about potential mutant unrest.
"...Captain Rogers just needed some air. Don't overthink it. For a soldier who slept through seventy years, the war is over. He has nowhere else to go." said Fury.
Coulson nodded silently, wondering when he might get his idol's autograph. As a lifelong fan of Captain America comics, he had collected stacks of trading cards.
"What about that playboy Stark?" Fury asked after a moment's thought.
He hadn't abandoned hopes of recruiting Iron Man. Beyond the combat capabilities of the armor, Fury valued Stark's scientific brilliance.
Coulson shook his head, "Busy with his Expo. And judging by his physical condition, the palladium poisoning seems to have eased."
The playboy remained elusive. Even his rapport with Pepper Potts yielded little intel.
Fury's expression remained unreadable. After consideration, he ordered Coulson to retrieve Sean Cyphers' files, emphasizing physical copies.
"Databases and video records can be unreliable. Old-fashioned methods are often safer." Fury eyed the file box his subordinate brought in.
The rising star's dossier wasn't extensive, containing nothing particularly noteworthy. To an outsider, it read like a rags-to-riches tale, the kind journalists might embellish into an inspirational underdog story to move readers.
But Nick Fury was a seasoned spymaster with sharp instincts. His single eye gleamed like a patient hunter tracking prey through darkness.
"Coulson, do you believe such people exist?" Fury lifted the file with a cold smile, "Orphaned, used compensation money to finish high school, displayed genius in college by developing groundbreaking gene therapy with a struggling scientist... No vices, no drinking, no womanizing, none of youth's arrogance. Polite, humble, impeccably mannered... If this guy ran for president, even I'd vote for him."
Coulson was speechless. The file had seemed ordinary, but Fury's perspective revealed something... unnervingly perfect?
Pulling up a holographic micro-map, Fury began marking locations, muttering to himself... "Gangland slaying... Frank D'Amico, around the time Sean Cyphers was on graduation trip with Harry Osborn..."
"...Oscorp stock plummets... Curtis Connors' lab reclaimed... then receives unexpected funding. Interesting... The money came from James Wesley, Hell's Kitchen's real estate mogul, formerly Wilson Fisk's right-hand man... And coincidentally, the so-called Kingpin died in a 'terrorist attack'."
Red circles bloomed across the map. With sharp intuition and S.H.I.E.L.D.'s vast resources, Fury easily traced the faintest clues... a hunter following crushed grass toward his quarry.
"The Hand... Fantastic Four... Worthington's collapse... Mutant Defense Initiative... Alkali Lake Dam base... Stryker's death... Mutants vanishing!"
As connections formed, an invisible web emerged, with the smiling young man at its center. Fury's voice dropped to a growl: "Got you."
Watching this, Coulson felt an inexplicable chill. He had met Sean Cyphers, who, by all appearances, was an exemplary young man.
Yet who could have imagined Director Fury would uncover so much from mere suspicion? Only a veteran spymaster would link a brilliant rising star to shadowy conspiracies.
"We lack concrete evidence," Coulson cautiously reminded, "James Wesley's funding went through SUNY's official accounts as charitable donations. And the night Frank D'Amico was killed, Sean Cypher's alibi holds... And no cameras captured the assassin."
Perhaps Fury's suspicions were correct, but S.H.I.E.L.D. lacked proof. The director's web of connections remained speculative... logical, yes, but equally dismissible as baseless conjecture.
Fury's eye gleamed thoughtfully. Tapping the desk, he stared at the hologram where Sean's radiant smile gave no hint of hidden depths.
"No one hides perfectly. Even beasts leave traces." The director's gaze turned icy as he addressed Coulson, "Soon enough, we'll see what this golden boy truly is..."
