Chapter 98: Chapter 98: Tony Stark's First Appearance
"A fire broke out on the Brooklyn Bridge last night. Part of the bridge was damaged, and several cables were severed. Over 100 people were trapped when the fire started, but fortunately, most have been rescued. More than 20 have been injured, though there have been no reported fatalities."
The news anchor's voice echoed from the radio.
The car driven by Uncle Ben came to a halt due to an engine malfunction.
"It seems like it's one of those days when everything goes wrong," Uncle Ben remarked as he got out of the car, casting a glance at the gray sky.
"It should just be an engine problem," Peter responded as he listened to the sound of the car.
"Hmm, the quality of modern cars has really gone downhill. I still remember my first car—a 1977 Plymouth. I drove it out of the garage, hit the fender, then crashed into a tree. After struggling for a while, it still worked fine."
Uncle Ben chuckled, reminiscing about his youthful days.
Peter smiled and said, "Seems like you were quite the rebel back then, Uncle Ben."
"In my day, rebellion and punk were all the rage, and the social atmosphere was much different," Uncle Ben explained while opening the car hood.
After Peter quickly fixed the engine, the car started again. Their destination was Osborne Manor.
"Meanwhile, Norman Osborne, the CEO of Osborne Industrial Company, was confirmed dead last night. Although both the local police and the spokesperson for Osborne Industries claim that his death is unrelated to the Brooklyn Bridge incident, the situation still raises suspicion," the news continued.
Uncle Ben reached over and turned up the volume, sighing as he commented, "Mr. Osborne invited our family to an event not long ago. It's hard to believe something like this happened to him."
Uncle Ben appeared genuinely sorry for Norman's death, unaware that his nephew, Peter, had indirectly played a role in it.
Peter stared out at the passing scenery, his mind distant. "Norman Osborne had a lot of enemies. It's not surprising," he said quietly.
"You and Harry are friends," Uncle Ben said, turning to Peter. "This must be a tough time for Harry. Maybe you could help him through it."
Peter remained silent for a moment before nodding. He had hypnotized Harry the previous night, so the memory of his "father-killing" actions was likely erased from his mind.
The news continued, but Peter's expression darkened as he listened. The official media had been downplaying the existence of the Green Goblin and the two Spider-Men, even though the fierce battle on the Brooklyn Bridge was witnessed by many. Moreover, the media had failed to reveal that Norman Osborne was the Green Goblin. After he and Gwen left the scene, the police should have quickly identified the Green Goblin's true identity, yet the authorities remained tight-lipped.
Peter's thoughts were interrupted when his phone vibrated. He pulled it out to find that Liz had uploaded footage of the battle on the Brooklyn Bridge to her personal channel, and had even liked the video herself. The footage showed the Green Goblin being bombarded by violent explosions and crashing to the ground, with fiery scenes and the screams of bystanders.
Putting the phone down, Peter saw that they were approaching Osborne Manor.
In today's internet-driven society, it was becoming increasingly impossible to conceal such events. Despite the authorities' efforts to cover up the truth, information still spread.
Osborne Manor was filled with mourners, and Gwen had also arrived with George Stacy. However, Gwen couldn't shake the odd feeling of attending Norman Osborne's funeral after what had happened the previous night. It felt surreal to her, knowing she had just been involved in taking down the man.
Her mood lightened somewhat when she saw Peter, though.
George Stacy, noticing the change in his daughter's mood, shot Peter an unfriendly glare.
"Peter," Gwen greeted him, and Uncle Ben wisely stepped aside to give them space.
"Still haven't come to terms with it, huh?" Peter asked, noticing Gwen's heavy expression.
"I… I just don't know how to face Harry," Gwen admitted.
Peter offered her reassurance, "Just do what you've been doing. Harry doesn't remember what happened last night. Just pretend everything is normal."
"I know, but…" Gwen sighed. "I wish I could be that calm, but I can't ignore it."
Before they could continue, Harry, his eyes red from crying, walked toward them.
"Peter, Gwen," he greeted them, and in a sudden motion, reached for Gwen's left hand, which had been nervously hanging by her side.
The unexpected touch startled Gwen, but as Harry's warmth reached her, she felt her anxiety melt away.
"Harry," Gwen said, looking at him with a heavy heart. "I'm so sorry."
Harry was confused, unsure of why Gwen was apologizing.
He shook his head. "It's not your fault, Gwen. Thank you for coming today. And you too, Parker."
"So… what are your plans now?" Gwen asked, hesitating.
Harry looked uncertain. "I don't know. I have to figure out what comes next. I've always wanted to escape my father's shadow, but now that it's really happened…"
He trailed off, but both Gwen and Peter knew what he meant.
Gwen took a deep breath. "No matter what happens, we're here for you. Peter and I—we'll help you through it."
Harry gave them a small, grateful smile. "I know. You two were always there for me, back in high school. All I had were you two as friends."
Before he could say more, the butler approached and spoke to him. Harry gave them an apologetic look before walking away.
Peter watched Harry leave, a sense of unease settling in. He couldn't shake the feeling that Harry knew more than he was letting on.
As Peter looked towards the entrance of Osborne Manor, his eyes caught sight of a man surrounded by bodyguards. The man wore sunglasses, and Peter's eyes narrowed in recognition.
Could it be… Tony Stark?
