Chapter 145: Chapter 145 - Black Cat's Bad Guess
Gwen entered relevant search terms on the computer and began her investigation. Using her father's internal police account, she accessed the police department's network and searched for criminal records involving Kingpin. The entire criminal underworld of New York City was accessible through the internal network.
When Gwen entered "Wilson Fisk," the details of the criminal leader immediately appeared on the screen. She muttered to herself, "Everyone knows he's a criminal mastermind, but no one can bring him to justice. He just keeps getting away with it."
She thought about how the Daily Bugle constantly reported on Spider-Man and Peter, but never focused on the real threats like Kingpin. Suddenly, she stumbled across an important detail. Kingpin had investments in the Daily Bugle. The truth was now clearer: the Bugle was part of Kingpin's empire.
"Figures," Gwen whispered, connecting the dots. "The Bugle and Kingpin are tied together, just like I thought."
Later that night, Gwen, in her Spider-Woman suit, stood on the rooftop of an office building, gazing at the moonlit sky. She replied to Peter's text: "I'm fine, Peter. Those two thieves were nothing. I handled it."
Peter's concern was evident in his message: "Are you okay?"
Gwen hesitated for a moment, debating whether to tell him about Kingpin's connection to the Daily Bugle. In the end, she opted for a less serious reply: "It's just frustrating. I saw another Bugle report about us today, and it's always biased. They should be reporting the real issues, like Kingpin, but no one cares."
Peter responded thoughtfully, "People don't want to know the truth. They just want the story to be simple: good guys vs. bad guys. They want villains they can boo and heroes they can cheer for. They don't really care about fairness."
Gwen sighed as she thought about her conversation with Peter. "Maybe Peter's right," she mused. "Am I being too harsh on my dad? Does the world really care about justice?"
As the cold December night air filled her lungs, Gwen swung through the city, her mind still turning over Peter's words. She reached the Fisk Building, the towering structure where Kingpin's office was located on the 34th floor. Using her skills, she climbed up the building's exterior and slipped into the office window.
Inside, Gwen searched desperately for evidence of Kingpin's criminal activities. Despite her efforts, she found nothing substantial. Standing by the window, she looked out at her own reflection, an uneasy feeling creeping up her spine. Just as she felt something was wrong, a loud alarm blared in the distance.
Her spider-sense tingled, warning her of imminent danger.
Before she could react, a deep voice echoed behind her, "Do you need help?"
Gwen spun around, instinctively throwing a punch. Her fist missed as the figure swiftly dodged. Gwen, now on alert, jumped back, keeping her distance. To her surprise, standing before her was none other than the towering Kingpin.
His henchmen burst into the room. "Boss, do you need help?"
"No," Kingpin growled, waving them off. "I'll handle this."
Gwen shot a strand of webbing at Kingpin's wrist, trying to immobilize him. She then launched herself forward, landing a powerful punch to his chin. Kingpin staggered back but remained unfazed. Gwen quickly delivered another blow, but Kingpin caught her fist mid-strike, squeezing her wrist.
"Who sent you?" Kingpin demanded.
"Does it matter?" Gwen shot back, but before she could finish, she broke free with an acrobatic flip and took a few steps back.
"I'll tell you who sent me," Gwen taunted. "Carson Daly."
Kingpin frowned. "I don't know him."
"Well, you should," Gwen quipped. "He invented cupcakes, and I thought a man your size would love those."
Kingpin's expression darkened with rage. "Very funny," he said, his voice low and menacing. "But now you've really angered me."
Gwen shot another webbing at him, but Kingpin, despite his size, was quick on his feet. He charged toward her, ignoring the webs. He reached her in seconds and threw a punch. Gwen ducked and grabbed a nearby chair, hurling it at him. The chair shattered upon impact, but Kingpin barely seemed to notice. With a powerful grip, he seized Gwen's ankle and slammed her into the floor.
The force of the impact was staggering, but Gwen quickly recovered, kicking Kingpin off and rolling to her feet. She shot another webbing to a nearby metal safe, using the momentum to swing it into Kingpin's face.
The massive man was momentarily disoriented, but he quickly raised his arms to block another punch. As Gwen continued to attack, she realized that Kingpin's resilience was far beyond her expectations.
Just as she prepared for another move, Kingpin's voice roared, "Electro!"
From behind, a bright yellow flash lit up the room, and a man covered in crackling electricity entered. His electric eyes glowed fiercely, and his body radiated sparks. Gwen stepped back warily.
Electro's gaze met Gwen's. "Sorry, boss. Took me a minute to get here. Had to deal with this female intruder."
Gwen raised an eyebrow. "Female intruder? Is that what you're calling me now?"
Kingpin, clearly annoyed, waved him off. "Forget the Black Cat for now. Take care of Spider-Woman first."
Electro grinned, "You got it." With a snap of his fingers, a bolt of lightning shot toward Gwen.
Her spider-sense screamed, and she dodged just in time, narrowly avoiding the attack. The sudden appearance of Electro shifted the odds, but Gwen was far from outmatched. As she evaded more attacks, she noticed a figure darting into the fray—the Black Cat.
Black Cat had infiltrated the building, and she was now fighting off some of Kingpin's henchmen. Gwen hesitated but quickly realized that the enemy had been distracted. She leaped into action, helping Black Cat handle one of the most dangerous of Kingpin's goons, a woman wielding a three-pronged dagger.
Together, they quickly gained the upper hand. However, the chaos wasn't over. Kingpin roared in frustration, "We're not done here!"
More of his men poured in, and it was clear the battle was far from over. But just as things seemed to be at their worst, the lights in the building suddenly went out, plunging the room into darkness. Chaos ensued as Kingpin's men scrambled in confusion.
"Where's the light?" they shouted, stumbling in the dark.
Taking advantage of the confusion, Gwen grabbed Black Cat's hand, pulling her out of the room and through a broken window. They jumped to the rooftop across the street, just as Kingpin's men were still disoriented.
"Let's go," Gwen said urgently, pulling Black Cat along.
Black Cat shot Gwen a surprised look. "I didn't expect you to help me."
"Well, technically, I'm not on your side," Gwen replied, "but I'm definitely not on Kingpin's side."
As the two of them made their escape, they saw Kingpin's men still scrambling below. Electro stood still, looking lost in the dark.
"Are you planning to steal something again?" Gwen teased as they caught their breath on the opposite rooftop.
Black Cat rolled her eyes. "I wasn't planning on stealing anything important tonight, but that's none of your business. Thanks for the help, though. I'll treat you to dinner after the concert on Sunday. Don't embarrass yourself on stage."
"Wait!" Gwen called out, still trying to wrap her head around what had just happened. "Why do you keep thanking Peter?"
Black Cat paused, then smiled slyly. "Tell Peter I owe him. Again."
Gwen was confused, but Black Cat was already slipping away into the night.
Back at his home, Peter had been keeping an eye on the situation through his surveillance system. He saw everything that had transpired between Gwen, Black Cat, and Kingpin's men.
The night wasn't over yet, and the game was far from finished.
