Chapter 142: Chapter 142: Extent of Development

The metallic door slowly opened, revealing an expansive space inside—much larger than the storage room Han Yu had repurposed in his general store.

Looking at the surrounding metallic walls, Han Yu stomped lightly on the ground. An invisible force surged from his foot, rippling across the floor. "This floor is six meters thick... all metal?"

"All metal," Charles replied with a smile. "A half-meter-thick block of this stuff can withstand a direct hit from a PRG missile without so much as a scratch. Getting my hands on it cost me a fortune."

"Not bad. It can serve both as a training area and a shelter," Han Yu said with a satisfied nod. Though he didn't know the exact composition of the metal, his earlier stomp had left no mark at all. If it had been any ordinary rock, it would have been reduced to dust.

Given that the space was designed for mutants to practice, the sturdiness needed to meet, or even exceed, the highest standards. The more durable, the better. Han Yu had initially considered using vibranium mixed with standard metals to build such a place.

But now, it seemed unnecessary. While this metal couldn't compare to vibranium, it was more than sufficient as a training ground.

To destroy this facility, at the very least, it would require a Level 4 mutant. Anything less wouldn't even come close.

"Who wants to go first?" Han Yu asked.

"I'll start," Genos volunteered, stepping forward. Addressing the group, he introduced himself, "I'm a cyborg and ranked 17th on the S-Class Hero list in my original world."

"Just demonstrating is boring. A sparring match would bring out your skills better. Let me try!" Erik stepped in front of Genos, smiling confidently. "My ability is telepathy. I'm a psychic mutant. Let's have a good match!"

"Please, go ahead!"

Though it was just practice, sparks flew between the two. Even though they were colleagues, it was their first time meeting, and neither wanted to show weakness.

Han Yu agreed this was a better approach. Real combat was more effective than simple demonstrations. Only in a fight could their true potential—and their opponent's—be fully displayed.

"Go all out. As long as you don't deal a fatal blow, I can heal you!"

Han Yu raised his right hand and made a twisting motion in midair. Suddenly, a woven grass basket appeared on the ground, filled with golden beans resembling small soybeans.

"These are Senzu Beans. As long as your brain isn't instantly obliterated, eating one of these will restore you to peak condition. Feel free to fight to your heart's content."

The crowd was stunned.

Such a miraculous item! If these were sold outside, even a single bean would fetch tens of millions—perhaps even hundreds of millions—of dollars. And now, there was an entire basket of them! A rough estimate suggested there were at least sixty or seventy beans inside.

"In that case, I won't hold back!" Erik's eyes burned with fighting spirit.

"Please, show me what you've got!" Genos replied with equal determination, refusing to back down.

As soon as the words left his mouth, Genos stomped on the ground, and the machinery on his shoulders instantly revealed two jet nozzles. His figure shot forward like a missile, vanishing from Erik's line of sight in an instant.

"So fast! But I'm no pushover!"

Erik's pupils contracted slightly, surprised by Genos's speed, but he remained calm. The next second, he closed his eyes. As his eyelids shut, a faint white glow enveloped his pupils.

"Resonance!"

A low command echoed from Erik's lips, and an invisible wave of psychic energy radiated outward in a circular pattern from him, spreading across the entire arena.

The psychic energy filled the area, allowing Erik to sense everything within it. In his mind, the movements of every person and object were vividly mapped out. Even with his eyes closed, he could clearly "see" everyone's actions.

"Sometimes, when you close your eyes, your mind becomes sharper."

Erik muttered softly. Then his movements changed abruptly. He turned sharply toward a specific direction—eyes still shut—and raised his hand to release a fan-shaped psychic force, which surged forward like an unstoppable wave.

Genos, caught in the psychic blast, slowed down from his lightning-fast pace. His blurred figure came back into focus and was now visible to the spectators.

"This guy is incredible. He's combining psychic power with echolocation, just like a bat. Even with his eyes closed, he can pinpoint my position, and he can release psychic attacks that are practically tangible!"

Genos suppressed the nausea brought on by the psychic force and took a deep breath. Muttering to himself, he analyzed the situation: "I need to keep my distance. Close-range attacks won't work. He must have a psychic field around him acting as a protective barrier. If I get too close, I'll be done for!"

He leapt backward to create some distance. As he retreated, data streams filled Genos's eyes, processing the optimal strategy for counterattack.

Among the onlookers, Han Yu raised an eyebrow and remarked, "Impressive. Erik's really developed his abilities to this level."

His tone carried a hint of admiration. In his memories, Professor X in his previous life primarily used psychic abilities for locating others and rarely employed them for flashy attacks. Erik, however, had taken the same ability and turned it into a powerful offensive tool.

"At first, I wanted him to pair up with the X-System to specialize in locating mutants, but he refused," Charles said with a mix of exasperation and pride. "He insisted on fighting on the frontlines. He's spent all this time honing his mutant abilities."

There was a hint of helplessness in Charles's voice, but also a sense of relief. He wasn't fond of combat, yet his powers were remarkably suited for it. It was a paradox he had come to accept.

Erik's relentless drive to improve his abilities was partly motivated by his desire to keep Charles off the battlefield. He knew how much his lifelong friend hated and avoided fighting.

From their childhood, whenever Charles was bullied, it was always Erik who stood up for him. Even now that they had become mutants, Erik had no intention of breaking that tradition.

Han Yu smiled and turned his attention back to Genos and Erik's battle.

Realizing that Erik's psychic abilities could be used for long-range attacks, Genos adapted his strategy. Knowing that simply running wouldn't work—since Erik could locate him through echolocation—Genos opted for a frontal assault instead.

Genos brought his arms together, the mechanical components on his limbs transforming into a massive cannon. Flames flickered to life inside the cannon, and in an instant, a torrent of fire roared out, engulfing the arena as it surged toward Erik.

"This guy... he's pulling out such a wide-range attack! This is bad!" Saitama thought to himself, preparing to intervene. But just as he was about to act, a hand grabbed his arm.

Turning, he saw it was Han Yu.

Han Yu shook his head and motioned with his chin toward the battlefield, signaling Saitama to wait and watch.

Saitama turned back to the fight. Standing calmly amidst the oncoming inferno, Erik's expression remained as composed as ever.
