Marvel 1919 : Rise of an Empire

Chapter 164: Danger Getting Closer

This was clearly not the appropriate time for conversation. Diana turned around to assess the group of students huddled behind her, then spoke in soothing tones.

"Is everyone alright? No one is hurt?"

"Good, everything's alright now. You can stand up, it's completely safe," Diana said gently, helping to pull up the elementary school students who had fallen to the floor during the commotion.

"It's all over now. Are you okay?" Diana smiled warmly at a small girl who had not yet risen to her feet.

"Are you hurt at all, sweetheart?"

The little girl smiled brightly and nodded at Diana, then asked with innocent curiosity, "Can I be just like you someday?"

"You can be whoever you want to be," Diana replied, looking directly into the child's eyes with complete sincerity.

Diana patted the girl's head, then stood gracefully and glanced briefly at George before instantly disappearing from the area in a blur of motion.

George offered a slight smile to the students who were now curiously staring at him with wide eyes. In the next moment, he too vanished from the hall.

At the summit of The Shard, London's towering new landmark building that stood 309.6 meters tall, Diana positioned herself on the very edge of the structure. She gazed out over the sprawling expanse of London spread below her.

"Where exactly are you from, and why are you seeking me out?" Diana asked without bothering to turn her head toward him.

"Could you perhaps remove the Lasso of Truth before conducting this interrogation?" George requested, glancing down at the golden rope wrapped securely around his calf.

"No," Diana replied curtly, finally turning around to face George directly.

"Alright, no problem at all," George responded with a casual smile, shrugging his shoulders in acceptance.

"You may call me George. I am not originally from this particular timeline or reality. However, due to the presence of a certain artifact existing within this timeline, I was compelled to travel to this world."

"Be more specific about your intentions," Diana demanded, maintaining her firm grip on the Lasso of Truth.

"Mother Box," George uttered these two words softly but with unmistakable gravity.

"That's impossible!" Diana's entire expression transformed upon hearing this revelation.

As the Princess of Paradise Island and daughter of Queen Hippolyta, Diana naturally possessed intimate knowledge of the Mother Box's existence and significance. The chamber containing it was the only forbidden area on the entire island of Themyscira that she had never been permitted to enter freely.

This meant Diana harbored particularly vivid impressions regarding the ancient artifact.

"Why would that be impossible?" George challenged her assumption.

"It hasn't displayed any activity for thousands of years, so there's no reason to believe..." Diana began to explain her reasoning.

"So nothing concerning will ever happen? Is that your logic?" George interrupted her mid-sentence.

Diana found herself suddenly uncertain how to respond to his pointed question. She could only give George a long, searching look before finally stating, "I will investigate this matter thoroughly and determine the truth."

After delivering this promise, she immediately used the Lasso of Truth to swing away from the building's top floor. She disappeared into the London skyline.

"As expected, it's not nearly that simple to gain her trust," George sighed to himself.

His earlier decision to assist Diana in dealing with the terrorist threat had been strategic. He intended to leave a positive first impression and create an opportunity to eventually join the final battle alongside her.

At that crucial moment, it should not prove too difficult to claim one of the Mother Boxes as rightful compensation for his contributions.

Now it seemed considerably more effort would be required to achieve his goals.

George began extending his enhanced perception abilities outward. Within moments, the entire cityscape of London formed a detailed three-dimensional image within his mind.

George now possessed what amounted to a god's-eye view, enabling him to clearly observe every minute detail throughout the metropolis.

Continuing to expand his perceptual range even further, George soon located the mystical presence of Paradise Island somewhere in the North Sea.

Paradise Island, also known by its ancient name Themyscira, had been created by Zeus himself, the King of the Olympian Gods.

The island remained protected by a powerful magical force field that prevented human high-technology equipment from detecting the island's existence. This safeguarded the Amazonian civilization that dwelled upon its shores.

Although conventional methods could never locate Paradise Island, George could pinpoint the island's exact location by detecting and tracking energy movements and magical signatures.

After successfully identifying Paradise Island's position, George chose not to rush toward it immediately. Instead, he waited patiently for the optimal opportunity to present itself.

Two days later, George detected a massive spatial fluctuation erupting from the direction of Paradise Island. This prompted him to immediately teleport directly into Diana's office.

Fortunately, Diana was alone in her workspace at that precise moment, reviewing various documents and files. This saved him the considerable trouble of having to modify other people's memories afterward.

"Diana, you need to come with me immediately," George announced directly upon materializing before her.

"Is that truly how all you mystical practitioners invite ladies to accompany them?" Diana looked up from her paperwork with a raised eyebrow.

"I've detected violent spatial fluctuations emanating from Paradise Island. Someone is employing ultra-long-range teleportation magic," George ignored Diana's teasing comment and directly informed her of his discovery.

"That's completely impossible. Paradise Island is protected by an impenetrable barrier established by God King Zeus himself. How could such defenses be so easily breached?"

"Moreover, Paradise Island is defended by numerous Amazonian warriors with centuries of combat experience. Trust me, no enemy force could possibly act with impunity on Paradise Island," Diana explained with obvious pride in her homeland's defenses.

"What if those legendary Amazonian warriors prove unable to resist this particular threat?" George posed the troubling question.

George suspected that Diana believed he was simply attempting to manipulate her into granting him access to Paradise Island. This explained her repeated rejection of his expressed goodwill and warnings.

However, this misunderstanding didn't particularly concern him. He had no genuine intention of preventing Steppenwolf from successfully claiming the Mother Box located on Paradise Island.

He merely needed to demonstrate appropriately that he stood firmly on the side of justice and righteousness. Being overly enthusiastic in his efforts might actually prove counterproductive to his ultimate goals.

"Very well, this remains your own choice to make," George observed, watching as Diana once again became absorbed in her writing and sketching.

"Believe me when I tell you, danger has already arrived at your doorstep." With that final warning, he instantly teleported away from her office.

After George's departure, Diana glanced up toward the spot where he had been standing. She appeared lost in contemplation for several moments, before shaking her head dismissively and burying herself once more in her work.

Following his exit from Diana's office, George began traveling throughout the United States as an ordinary civilian. Many of the cities here simply did not exist within the Marvel Universe he was familiar with.

Places like Gotham City, Central City, Metropolis, Coast City, and Star City represented entirely unique locations.

The heroes of the DC Universe operated quite differently from their counterparts in the Marvel Universe. Heroes here typically dedicated themselves to protecting individual cities.

Many heroes adhered strictly to a no-kill principle in their crime-fighting methods. Batman and the Flash served as particularly representative figures of this philosophical approach.

The day immediately following George's departure from London, Diana was carefully restoring an ancient sculpture while discussing upcoming vacation plans with a museum colleague.

At that moment, another coworker entered the room. He began complaining extensively about the museum's recent budget cuts, the increasing problem of grave robbers targeting archaeological sites, and incidents of public arson resulting in the destruction of cultural artifacts.

He switched on the television to show his colleagues the breaking news report.

"This is a live report from the island of Crete. The massive bonfire you can see behind me has been burning with incredible intensity. The flames have been raging throughout the entire night."

"It's morning now, and even though we're positioned at least eight kilometers away from the source, we can still clearly observe the inferno continuing to burn..."

This particular news broadcast immediately captured Diana's complete attention. When she witnessed the raging flames consuming what remained of the ancient Amazonian temple ruins, she instantly understood the coded message being conveyed to her: "Enemy invasion!"

Moving with urgent purpose, Diana quickly traveled to the site of the Amazonian temple ruins. She successfully retrieved a hidden message that had been concealed within an arrow shaft lodged precisely in the center of the destroyed temple structure.

Following the cryptic guidance provided by the message, Diana located and entered a secret chamber concealed beneath the temple foundations.

There, depicted across elaborate wall murals, she discovered comprehensive information about the Mother Box's history and significance. She also found detailed intelligence regarding the invading enemy force.

Even Diana, with all her combat experience and divine heritage, felt genuinely concerned about the approaching threat.

This inevitably made her reconsider the mysterious mage who had appeared before her with his warnings and predictions.

If everything he had told her proved to be accurate, then she would need to assemble a proper team of allies immediately.

Diana now understood with crystal clarity that the enemy she was facing this time was not someone she could possibly hope to defeat alone.
