Chapter 54: Chapter 54: Cold Air Enters the Body
Mrs. Xu said, “Give some of the meat to Huo Chen.”
Mr. Xu was completely puzzled. Since when had his wife become friendly with the Huo Family?
It was only then Mrs. Xu explained, “Huo Chen saved our daughter. If it weren’t for him, Yingying probably wouldn’t have made it back from the mountain today.”
Mr. Xu’s eyes widened, a wave of fear washing over his face. He hurriedly took out half of the wild boar meat that the family had received, “Huo Chen, take this back to eat, thank you for saving my daughter today.”
Huo Chen shook his head, “I don’t want it. Xu Ying also saved me and Old Hui before.”
Moreover, he wasn’t sure exactly what Xu Ying did for Old Hui today, but he knew that Old Hui seemed to have recovered a lot.
Mrs. Xu, insisting on giving the meat, said, “You were saved by my daughter before and we have already compensated her with thank-you money. This time you saved our daughter. It wouldn’t be right for our family not to show some gratitude.”
Huo Chen’s eyes flickered and he spoke, “Could you just make some food for me? The meal last time was too delicious.”
Upon hearing this, Mrs. Xu immediately knew this young man was praising her daughter’s cooking again. She smiled proudly, “Of course it’s delicious. My daughter’s cooking skills are no mere boast. Anyone who tries it finds it delectable—I’d wager even the Jade Emperor would find it to his liking.”
“But not this time, my daughter isn’t feeling well,” Mrs. Xu said.
Huo Chen nodded, his lips pressed tightly together, his fist clenching a bit more.
“Auntie, I’ll head back now.” After saying this, Huo Chen ran off with the meat.
Mrs. Xu, seeing that she hadn’t managed to give away the meat, stamped her foot in frustration.
“That’s enough. The lad obviously doesn’t want it. Besides, they don’t lack for meat. Why make a fuss? Let’s hurry back, what’s wrong with our daughter?” Mr. Xu looked worried.
Mrs. Xu glared at him. Her daughter was as beautiful as a celestial being, who knew if that rascal had taken a fancy to her?
What if it was true? The boy was fierce-looking, and his actions were rough. What if he really carried their daughter off? What would they do then?
She was lost in her thoughts, “She got her period and her stomach hurts, probably from catching a chill from falling in the water last time.”
Mr. Xu nodded and sped up his return home.
When Mr. Xu arrived home, there was a crowd around Xu Ying.
The two Xu brothers looked worried. Xu Jing and some of her cousins were also in the room.
Xu Ying, lying in bed, propped her forehead helplessly, “I’m really okay now.”
Is there anyone who feels pressured by their family’s concern?
She did. It felt like they were making a big deal as if she were about to die, just because she got her period. To those who were unaware, it might seem as if she were some princess.
“Ouch, my daughter, mom is back. Are you still in pain?” Mrs. Xu had intended to show her care, yelling even before she entered the room.
But once inside, she found the room full of people.
Her expression changed, and she coughed a few times, “What are you all doing standing around in the room?”
“Mom, I heard my little sister was in pain, so I came to see her.”
“Mom, what’s going on? Why is my little sister’s stomach hurting so much?”
“I, I wish I could take the pain for my little sister.”
“Sister-in-law, it’s all our fault for taking Yingying up the mountain, causing her this great misfortune.” Xu Ying’s periods were usually pretty regular.
After thinking it over, Xu Jing could only attribute it to the climb. After all, a morning of mountain climbing wasted a lot of energy, not to mention the shock.
“My stomach doesn’t hurt anymore!” Xu Ying said.
Everyone clearly didn’t believe her.
Feeling helpless, Xu Ying climbed out of bed with the urge to cry. Couldn’t she just use her period as an excuse to be a bit lazy without all this fuss? Wuuuuu~
Everyone finally believed that Xu Ying wasn’t in any pain when they saw her walk around without any reaction.
Then they all breathed a sigh of relief, thinking about the meat distributed at noon, every single one of them was excited.
A group of people surrounded Xu Ying, lavishing praises on her as if she was almost an ethereal fairy.
“Jingjing, hurry back, the guests have arrived,” Second Aunt Xu rushed over hastily.
Upon hearing this, Xu Jing’s face was filled with helplessness; she was nineteen years old and had already reached the age for matchmaking.
Over the past year or so, she had met with countless men, yet every one of them was a huge oddity.
Not only did Second Aunt Xu call Xu Jing, but she also called Mrs. Xu to help evaluate the suitor.
They had already understood his family background, the only thing left was to understand the man’s character.
However, assessing a man’s character mainly fell on Xu Jing, but Second Aunt Xu didn’t feel at ease, so she called Mrs. Xu to join as well.
Xu Ying had never seen a matchmaking event before and was full of gossip; Mrs. Xu, thinking that her daughter was also not young anymore and would soon have to attend matchmaking sessions herself, took her along to gain some experience.
“Don’t come out when you get there, just watch from inside the room,” Mrs. Xu instructed.
It’d be really embarrassing if the man didn’t take to Xu Jing and instead took a liking to her own daughter.
It wasn’t that Mrs. Xu was too vain; it was mainly because her beloved daughter was just too beautiful.
Xu Ying entered the room in advance, waiting for the arrival of the suitor’s family.
When the people arrived, Xu Jing was still in the room, the two sat on the edge of the bed whispering to each other.
“Yingying, what kind of partner do you want to marry?”
Xu Ying was at a loss for words; if it were her previous life, she would have yearned for romance, hoping to find someone romantic who loved her, someone who would understand her without her having to say anything.
But after her experiences in her past life, she no longer had any interest in love or marriage.
However, she could still offer Xu Jing some advice, “When choosing a man to marry, his character is the most important. There’s a lot to consider, such as a calm temperament.
He should be composed in the face of issues, able to make the right judgment, giving you a sense of security. If you marry such a man, at critical moments, he’ll be like a strong sedative, not leaving you flustered.”
“Also, someone who respects you. You should choose someone who knows how to respect and understand you so that you can have your personal space after marriage.
Someone decisive is more suitable for marriage because when dealing with affairs, they can make up their mind and not hesitate or be swayed by others’ opinions. So, you definitely want a man with his own views.
With no bad habits, who doesn’t smoke or drink; a small smoking habit might be okay, as long as it can be quit. The most taboo is gambling, as there are many families ruined by men who gamble…”
Xu Ying said quite a lot, and Xu Jing nodded her head, looking at her sister with bright, admiring eyes.
The suitor’s family soon arrived, and Xu Jing was called out.
Xu Ying peered out of the window and saw the man entering; her eyes were full of anger.
This man was the same one who had bullied Gu Fuying before.
This bastard even dared to come for a matchmaking session with her cousin; Xu Ying’s anger soared.
However, she didn’t rashly go out but gave her cousin some time to evaluate his character.
In the yard, Second Aunt Xu warmly welcomed the family, and the matchmaker praised them extravagantly.
Second Aunt Xu was extremely pleased, and as soon as they took their seats, she began to subtly inquire about the family’s situation.
The matchmaker couldn’t stop talking, “Oh, the man’s family conditions are just like this,” as she raised her thumb.
“This young man works at a seasoning factory, as a permanent employee, and his mother is a worker in a textile factory, same as his father. The entire family are permanent workers. Big sister, what more could you want?”
“Such good conditions, where else could you find them? It’s only because I have a good relationship with you that I take such care of you,” the matchmaker whispered into Second Aunt Xu’s ear.
Mrs. Xu, sitting next to Second Aunt Xu, heard every word clearly. She curled the corners of her mouth in disdain; she would have to be really foolish to take the matchmaker’s word seriously.
She tugged on Second Aunt Xu’s arm, signaling her to make her own judgment.
