Marked by My Stepbrother

Chapter 6: Chapter 6 What are you laughing at_1

Wen Mian nodded.

"That's what I can't figure out either, so I submitted my resume to the piano class. The day after tomorrow, I start the job officially."

Mo Xiaoqi looked at Wen Mian with heartache, choking up for a long time.

"Whatever the outcome, take good care of yourself."

"Okay."

After hanging up the video call, Wen Mian took a hot shower and lay down on her bed, exhausted.

That night, Wen Mian slept restlessly.

The pale, swollen face of her mother hanging herself, the blood splattering from her father's suicide, and the lingering gaze in Axuan's eyes as he lay in a pool of blood tormented Wen Mian's nerves one after another.

She slept for a whole day and night.

When she opened her eyes again, it was already 7:30 in the evening.

Wen Mian quickly got up and hurried downstairs to hail a cab.

Just as she took out her phone, she was blinded by a strong glare from car headlights.

As the car window slowly rolled down, Wen Mian recognized the familiar face in the driver's seat.

It was Pei Zhiyao again.

"Get in," he said curtly.

Wen Mian's expression darkened.

"No need, I can take a cab myself."

Pei Zhiyao looked up, raising an eyebrow, "Oh? Then why does your phone show that no drivers are taking orders?"

Wen Mian was at a loss for words.

She lived too far from the city center, and at this hour, few drivers passed by. She had no other choice.

Clenching her teeth, Wen Mian opened the car door and got in, bracing herself.

The car started quickly, the scenery outside changing and receding.

Wen Mian subconsciously reached for the motion sickness medication in the side pocket of her bag, but it wasn't there.

She suffered from severe motion sickness and usually kept medicine in her bag, but she had left in such a hurry that she might have forgotten it.

It seemed this ride was destined to be difficult.

Wen Mian closed her eyes to rest, trying her best to ignore the increasing sensation of nausea in her chest.

From beside her came the man's cool, pleasant voice—

"The medicine is in the drawer to your left."

Wen Mian paused and looked up at Pei Zhiyao.

He continued to drive without looking away, the light from the street lamps outside the car casting a beautiful play of light and shadow on his face.

Opening the drawer on her left, Wen Mian saw a familiar medicine box, the brand she always used.

She opened the box and paused again.

All the pills had their sharp edges considerately trimmed off, the foil was curved and felt smooth to the touch.

Wen Mian took one but scoffed disdainfully.

Pei Zhiyao frowned, "What are you laughing at?"

"I'm laughing at how much Young Master Pei has improved his skills over the past five years, with such attention to detail in wooing women," Wen Mian's eyes were thick with scorn, "How many women have been pleased with such tricks?"

Hearing this, Pei Zhiyao's face darkened and he gritted his teeth.

"I shouldn't have given you the medicine; it would be best if you died in the car!"

Wen Mian rolled her eyes, "I never thought I'd have the honor. I wonder which of Young Master Pei's women I must thank for this favor."

The hands holding the steering wheel tightened involuntarily, and Pei Zhiyao clenched his back teeth even harder.

The two of them didn't speak another word during the drive.

Half an hour later, Wen Mian followed Pei Zhiyao into the party's private room.

As they entered, cheers and screams filled the room, where everyone was lively, toasting and drinking.

Standing behind Pei Zhiyao, Wen Mian looked on with calm eyes, observing everyone quietly.

For a moment, she attracted everyone's gaze.

Today, Wen Mian wasn't wearing heavy makeup, just a simple white body-hugging long dress that outlined her shapely figure. Her chestnut hair curled slightly, and her upturned fox-like eyes were cool, yet carried a hint of allure, creating a beauty that was untouchable.
