Chapter 7: The Trials of the Beast 2
The Beast that stood before Ryu remained still for a moment, its massive form looming like a dark shadow. It watched him intently, its glowing eyes no longer filled with hostility, but something deeper—curiosity, perhaps even respect. The air between them seemed to shift, as if the very atmosphere had come alive with the energy of their connection. Ryu could feel it now—the power he had been searching for, pulsing and resonating within him, the mark on his wrist thrumming in perfect synchronization with the Beast's presence.
For a few moments, neither of them moved. The other Beasts surrounding him remained eerily silent, their glowing eyes locked on the two of them. Ryu wasn't sure what was happening—whether it was the mark that had awakened something in the Beast or whether it was the connection he had finally made—but for the first time since this trial had begun, Ryu felt the beginnings of control. Not over the Beast itself, but over the power that was flowing through him.
The Beast in front of him let out a low growl, almost approving. It took a step back, its massive paws making no sound on the cracked earth as it slowly circled him once again.
"You have begun to understand, Bearer of the Mark," it rumbled, its voice vibrating through the ground. "But strength is only part of the equation. You must learn the Beast's true nature, for only then will you command its power."
Ryu swallowed hard, his pulse still racing from the adrenaline of the fight. His limbs were sore, his body aching, but he could feel the mark still pulsing within him, like a beacon. His mind was focused, clear in a way it hadn't been before. He knew what the Beast meant now. Strength alone wouldn't win this trial. He had to understand the Beast's nature, connect with its primal essence. But how?
He had to reach deeper.
The mark on his wrist glowed brighter, and in that moment, something in Ryu's mind clicked. He wasn't just fighting the Beasts. He was becoming one with them. The connection wasn't a one-way street; it was a bond that needed mutual understanding. He had to meet them halfway. He had to give as much as he took. His mind and heart had to align with theirs.
Closing his eyes, Ryu took a slow, steadying breath. He let the surrounding noise fade away, focusing only on the energy flowing through him. It was like an electric hum that ran beneath his skin, vibrating through every fiber of his being. The mark wasn't just a source of power—it was a bridge, a conduit to the Beasts, a means of understanding their world. If he could connect with that, he could control it.
The image of the Beast before him filled his mind's eye, and with it came a flood of ancient memories—hunting in the wild, running across open plains, feeling the wind against its fur. He could sense the Beast's instincts, the raw, unfiltered force of its being. The Beast was a creature of freedom, of power. But it was also bound by the rules of nature, governed by an unspoken order. There was a balance within it, a harmony between strength and wisdom, fury and restraint.
Ryu's heart pounded as he began to understand. He had been trying to force the power, to control it with strength alone. But that was not how the Beasts operated. They were wild, yes, but they were also creatures of balance. It was this balance he needed to learn to command.
Opening his eyes, Ryu faced the Beast once more. He raised his hand, palm open, and without speaking, let his intention pour out through the mark. He wanted to understand. He wasn't going to fight it anymore. He was going to listen.
The Beast paused its circling, its glowing eyes narrowing. It was waiting, sensing the change in Ryu's energy. The air seemed to grow even heavier, charged with the power of the connection. Ryu felt his heart sync with the rhythm of the Beast's presence, as though they were breathing together, moving as one.
And then, the Beast spoke again, its voice like a deep rumble in the earth.
"You seek to understand us. But understand this: only those who are true to their nature can stand beside us."
Ryu felt the weight of the Beast's words settle into his chest. It wasn't just about power. It wasn't even just about strength or understanding. It was about something deeper—something more primal. The Beasts were not creatures that could be tamed, controlled like mere tools. They were forces of nature, bound by their own instincts, their own rules. And to walk with them, to wield their power, he had to be true to his own nature as well.
"What does it mean to be true to my nature?" Ryu asked quietly, the question slipping from his lips almost instinctively.
The Beast's eyes flickered with a sharp gleam of recognition, as if Ryu had said something it had been waiting for.
"It means you must acknowledge the Beast within you, Bearer. You are not just a human. You are bound by the same instincts, the same primal hunger that we are. To command the power, you must first accept that you, too, are wild. You, too, are part of this world's balance."
The words were heavy, loaded with meaning. Ryu's mind raced as he processed them. He had spent so much of his life trying to deny the primal side of himself, trying to fit into a world that didn't make room for his true instincts. But now, with the mark burning against his skin, he was starting to realize that the world of the Beasts was not something foreign to him. It was something inside him, a part of him he had only begun to tap into.
The Beast stood motionless, watching him closely. Its eyes were searching, probing, as if to see if Ryu was ready.
Without another word, the Beast slowly backed away. It was clear now that the test was not over—not by a long shot. Ryu felt the weight of its gaze, still focused on him as it turned and walked into the mist that surrounded the clearing.
"The test continues."
As the Beast's words echoed in his ears, the other Beasts began to move, stepping forward and circling him once again. The circle was closing in tighter now, the energy in the air thickening with their presence. Ryu could feel the tension building, the pressure rising. This was the moment. He had made progress, yes, but he wasn't finished. Not by a long shot.
His mark burned once more, and Ryu knew that he was being tested not just in power, but in spirit. The Beasts weren't just going to hand him control—they were going to see if he could truly master the balance they lived by.
The first Beast lunged again, this time faster, its speed blurring before Ryu's eyes. His body reacted instinctively, but this time he was ready. He didn't dodge in panic; he didn't think about evading the attack. He simply let his instincts guide him, feeling the rhythm of the battle rather than forcing it. His movements were fluid, his body in perfect sync with the power of the mark. He was no longer just reacting—he was one with the flow of the fight.
With each strike, each dodge, Ryu felt the bond growing stronger. He was no longer fighting the Beast; he was understanding it, moving with it, as though their movements were one continuous dance. The Beast growled in frustration, but there was a strange respect in its eyes now. Ryu's control was growing, but there was more to prove.
As the Beast lunged for the final time, Ryu stepped into its strike—not away from it. His palm struck the Beast's chest with a powerful thrust, sending it skidding back, stunned. The mark flared on his wrist, and he felt the power surge within him. The Beast staggered, its breath heavy, but it did not attack again.
Ryu lowered his hand, panting, his body exhausted. He had done it. He had passed the trial—at least, the first part of it. The Beast slowly lowered its head, its eyes gleaming with a strange, ancient wisdom.
"You are ready."
The words hit Ryu like a wave crashing against the shore. He had passed the test. He had earned the right to stand with the Beasts.
But he knew this was only the beginning.
