Mark of the Beast :Destiny Awakening

Chapter 16: The Echoes of the Past

Ryu's steps were heavy as he exited the ethereal chamber, his heart still pounding with the intensity of the trial he had just endured. The Guardian's presence lingered behind him like a shadow, its cryptic words still echoing in his mind. "The Vale's trials have only just begun."

What did that mean? Ryu had confronted the chaos within him, faced his darkest memories, and come out stronger for it. But the Guardian had made it clear that his journey was far from over. This was just the first step. And from the way it spoke, there would be more. Much more.

As the mist parted before him, Ryu found himself standing in a vast, open field. The land stretched endlessly before him, the sky above a dull gray, as if the world itself were holding its breath. The ground beneath him was barren, cracked, and lifeless, the remnants of some long-forgotten battle.

It felt eerily silent.

Ryu surveyed the area carefully, his senses on high alert. His sword was gripped tightly in his hand, ready for anything. His mind was still racing from the trial, the weight of his own emotions still fresh. He could still feel the chaos inside him, but it was no longer the wild, untamed beast it had been. He had a sense of control over it now, a delicate balance between light and darkness within.

But the silence in the air made his instincts scream that something was wrong.

Suddenly, the stillness was shattered by a deep, guttural growl that came from the distance. Ryu's heart skipped a beat as he turned toward the sound, his eyes narrowing.

What was that?

The growl reverberated through the ground beneath him, a low rumble that sent vibrations through the earth. It was the kind of sound a predator made before striking, the kind of noise that sent a chill down the spine of anyone who heard it.

Ryu took a cautious step back, his hand tightening around the hilt of his sword. His senses were heightened, every muscle in his body coiled and ready for a fight. The air felt charged, the tension so thick he could practically taste it.

Then, from the depths of the field, a shape began to emerge. At first, it was a small figure, but as it grew closer, Ryu realized just how massive it truly was. A hulking figure, shrouded in shadow, its eyes glowing a fierce, unnatural red. Its body was like a monstrous amalgamation of different creatures—clawed limbs, a hulking frame, and fur covered in scars, as though it had been in countless battles.

A beast. But this one… this one was different.

The creature's growl deepened, and its massive jaws parted, revealing rows of razor-sharp teeth that could rip a person in half with a single bite. Its eyes locked onto Ryu, and the intensity of its gaze sent a shiver down his spine.

This wasn't just a beast.

This was something far worse. This was a creature that had been shaped by malice, its very existence twisted by the same darkness that had once consumed Ryu. The aura of hatred and bloodlust that emanated from it was suffocating.

Ryu instinctively tightened his grip on his sword, but his hand trembled. He could feel the weight of the moment bearing down on him, the air thick with impending doom. This creature, whatever it was, was unlike anything he had ever encountered before.

"So... you're the one they've sent to test me." Ryu muttered under his breath, his voice steady, though a flicker of doubt passed through his mind. "I'm not afraid of you."

The beast let out a deafening roar that shook the very earth beneath them. Its claws scraped against the ground as it charged forward, moving with terrifying speed. Ryu barely had time to react, raising his sword in defense just as the creature lunged.

The impact of the creature's massive weight sent Ryu flying backward, crashing into the dry earth. The wind was knocked out of his lungs, and for a moment, he struggled to catch his breath. His vision blurred, and the chaos inside him began to stir again, a raw, untamed power begging to be unleashed.

Focus. Breathe. Control.

He gritted his teeth, forcing himself to push through the pain. The creature was already on its feet again, its eyes blazing with fury as it bared its fangs. It was relentless, a creature born of darkness and destruction. Ryu could feel its malice, its hunger for destruction, and he knew that if he didn't act fast, he would be consumed.

Ryu's mind raced, calculating his next move. He couldn't fight this beast with raw strength alone. He had to think. He had to control his power. The chaos within him was a tool now, not a curse, but if he let it take over completely, he would be no better than the creature in front of him.

With a determined shout, Ryu surged forward, channeling the chaos that thrummed through his veins. His sword ignited with a faint blue glow, the mark on his wrist pulsing with energy. He could feel the power building within him, and he let it surge outward, focusing all of his energy into a single, devastating strike.

But just as he was about to swing, the beast's eyes gleamed with an unsettling intelligence. It ducked, moving faster than Ryu anticipated, and before he could react, it swiped at him with a claw the size of his torso.

The force of the attack sent Ryu crashing to the ground once again. This time, the impact was enough to knock the wind from his lungs entirely. Blood dripped from his side where the creature's claw had grazed him, but Ryu didn't have the luxury of pain. He couldn't afford to stop. Not now.

As he staggered to his feet, he saw the beast approaching again, its steps slow and deliberate. The monster was savoring the fight, the hunt. And as it grew closer, Ryu noticed something else—a strange symbol etched into the beast's chest, glowing faintly.

The mark.

Ryu's heart skipped a beat as a realization hit him like a bolt of lightning. The creature… it wasn't just any monster. It had the same mark that had appeared on his own wrist. The same symbol that had been with him all this time.

Was this creature… a part of him?

The ground beneath him trembled again, and before Ryu could fully process what was happening, a deep, resonating voice filled the air. It came from everywhere, surrounding him like a storm.

"You are not the only one chosen by the Mark, Bearer."

The beast let out another bone-chilling roar, its glowing eyes locking onto Ryu's.

"You are not the only one who will suffer."

And then, the world around him darkened. The winds began to howl, and Ryu's heart raced as the beast's shadow loomed over him. The chaos within him flared, but Ryu knew that it wasn't enough. Not yet.

He had to fight. He had to survive.

But as the monster lunged once more, Ryu's mind flashed with the unsettling thought that maybe, just maybe, this trial was only just beginning.
