Chapter 323: I don't feel so good!
Back in the spectating stands where hawk-like beasts crowded the skies, Max stood amidst a whirlwind of chaos.
Moments ago, he had executed a large-scale attack that annihilated hundreds of the flying creatures, attempting to close the swirling portals above. But despite his best efforts, the portals remained.
Thinking the wave of beasts had ended, Max prepared to rest—until more hawks poured from the portals like a flood. Gritting his teeth, he surged to his feet, lightning crackling around him as he prepared to go all out.
"Shit! I won't be able to eliminate them all at once," Max muttered, his voice laced with frustration. He raised his finger skyward, lightning pulsing from his core.
The wolves lunged.
The hawk-beasts opened their beaks wide, spewing acidic goo in countless streams aimed at the small group below.
"You don't have to eliminate them by yourself. We're here to help!" a feminine voice rang from above.
In the blink of an eye, a barrage of fireballs rained down from a majestic dragon composed entirely of roaring flames. The beast let out a thunderous cry, its wings flaring wide.
Descending from its back was a young woman with crimson hair fluttering like wildfire in the wind.
Zip!
Lightning flashed, and a figure shot into the stands. A young man emerged, his body crackling with energy.
"Greg, Scarlet?!" Vanica gasped in disbelief.
"Yes," Scarlet replied firmly. Above her, the fire dragon hovered with wings ablaze. Greg stood beside her, electric arcs spiraling from his limbs.
"Wait, weren't you both at the clinic? Is Vince still back there alone?" Arthur asked, panic creeping into his voice.
"Vince is safe. The clinic's the most secure spot right now. But we need to focus on surviving this mess," Greg said, never taking his eyes off the enemy.
"I recognize you both. Grey's friends, right?" Max asked without turning.
"Yes," Scarlet confirmed.
"Good. Do you think you can handle the wolves? Let me take care of the flying insects." Max asked and right on cue, out of the three dozens of wolves, three bolted forward at astonishing speed.
"Drags!" Scarlet shouted.
The fire dragon roared, opening its jaws wide and releasing a torrent of flames that engulfed the wolves. Within seconds, they were reduced to smoldering ash.
"Does that answer your question?" Greg smirked.
"Fair enough," Max replied, crouching low. Then, with a thunderous burst of lightning, he launched into the sky.
The hawk-beasts responded immediately, adjusting course toward him. Max spun mid-air, lightning shooting from his limbs like spears, striking down any creature that dared approach.
'I…I…I…I…' Max stuttered inwardly as he leapt from beast to beast, slamming them out of the air with a single punch.
His gaze turned back towards the two swirling portals in front of him that kept spawning more and more beasts.
'I have to take out those portals no matter what.' Max resolved as he encased himself with a tremendous amount of lightning detonating it and causing a huge explosion that knocked and killed all the hawk beasts in the air.
Unlike before where he fell back down in exhaustion, Max coated his body with more lightning and then shot towards one of the portals in a burst of electricity and then…
He disappeared into the portal.
"What the hell?!" Vorden shouted, eyes wide.
"What happened?" Greg asked, dodging a wolf's snapping jaws. He retaliated with a bolt of lightning that blasted another beast backward.
"He just flew into the portal!" Vorden exclaimed, summoning a mist shield around himself as a wolf lunged.
Vanica scanned the sky frantically. "Max? Where is he?!"
"Damn it! What did he do?!" Scarlet growled as her dragon incinerated wolves and she hurled fireballs left and right.
"What if he doesn't come back?" Gordon said, launching waves of dark purple mist that disoriented and poisoned the advancing wolves.
*AWHOO!*
The wolves howled together before feeling a little groggy and dizzy. Foams spewing from their jaws, black blood dripping down their eyes before they all hit the ground with a sickening thud.
'Even Gordon is more useful than me right now,' Vorden thought bitterly.
"We don't have time to focus on him right now. It would be best we focus on ourselves instead." Greg grunted. Too slow to dodge, a wolf slashed at his leg, drawing blood.
Staggering, he fell into the path of another beast.
"Look out!" Scarlet shouted.
She thrust her hand forward, launching a fireball. The wolf recoiled, but Greg reacted first, firing a point-blank lightning bolt that crushed the beast's skull.
Vanica glanced up at the portals. 'Why aren't they spawning more hawks? This feels wrong...'
"Lightning Creation Magic: Lightning Serpent!" Greg shouted.
Boom!
A colossal serpent of lightning burst from his hand, crashing through a dozen wolves before dissipating into static.
*Kuk!*
"Okay, that is almost all my mana that I have managed to gather left." Greg panted as he glanced up to see a wolf lunge at him, fangs bared.
"Curses!" He tried to summon a sword, but was too slow.
Thump!
A fiery arrow pierced the wolf's skull, saving him.
"You okay?" Scarlet asked, panting, knees trembling.
'Not good. These two are getting tired especially since they had initially exhausted all their mana during the tournament.' Arthur thought, panic washing over him as he saw the remaining twenty wolves dashing towards them.
Above, Scarlet's dragon flickered. Her mana was nearly gone.
'My mana is almost over, so I guess it's time for a big one, huh?' she thought.
"Drags!" she called. "Fire Magic: Inferno!"
The dragon unleashed a tsunami of fire. Scarlet added a giant fireball to it, the combination reducing the wolves to ash.
She collapsed, sweat dripping from every pore. Greg dropped to one knee, his lightning aura fizzling out.
"Did we... do it?" Vorden asked, stepping from his mist.
"Yeah... but it's not over," Scarlet warned, gazing below.
"At least the skies are clear," Gordon said, breathing a sigh of relief.
"Yeah, I gu—"
"ARGHHHH!*
They all heard a loud shout followed by a lightning bolt crashing into the stands, all chairs were flung out almost crashing into the stunned students if it wasn't for the fact that Arthur had quickly cast a bubble that protected them all.
"That voice..." Vanica muttered.
She ran toward the blast site, others following.
There lay Max—bloodied, burned, clothes torn, one arm melted from acid.
"Shit! Max!" Vanica screamed. Her hands glowed with healing light as she placed them on his chest.
"Guy…guys." Max was heard trying to say and everybody leaned closer trying to listen to what he was trying to say.
"No! Don't say anything. Keep shut let me fix your wound. I know I can't regrow limbs yet, but I can at least patch up these wounds." Vanica said as she concentrated hard.
*Kuk!*
"You don't understand guys." Max said, his voice barely above a whisper as he coughed loudly. "You… you all need to run now. He… it is coming."
"It's coming?" Greg asked. "What's coming?"
"Uhm...Guys?" Vorden called out from beneath one of the portals, now expanding rapidly.
"What is it?" Gordon snapped loudly as he strode over to stand beside Vorden who pointed at the portal.
"Something is going on with the portal." Vorden replied and Gordon followed Vorden's fingers to glance up causing his eyes to widen in shock, beads of sweat trickling down.
"If something is wrong with the portal, should you be standing directly below it?" Greg shouted in anger as he slowly limped over when.
"NO! Get away from the portal!" Max screamed.
"What is he?" Vorden trailed off as he tried to move when…
SPLOOSH!
A thick, dark liquid rained from above, drenching Vorden and Gordon.
"Huh? Rain?" Gordon blinked.
Scarlet gasped. "What the hell?!"
"Greg... I don't feel... so good," Vorden mumbled.
And then he melted. Flesh, clothes, bone—all dissolving into sludge.
Gordon followed.
"NOOO!!!" Greg roared, his cry echoing over the battlefield.
