interlude 3

Empty pizza boxes lay scattered across Brendan's desk, remnants of a late-night study session fueled by caffeine and pepperoni. Mark, sprawled on the floor amidst a tangle of textbooks and gaming magazines, stretched and let out a satisfied groan.

"Man, I think I've absorbed enough organic chemistry to last a lifetime," Mark said, rubbing his eyes wearily. "I'm pretty sure I saw the periodic table in my dreams last night."

Brendan chuckled, pushing aside a stack of notes to make room for his coffee mug. "You'd be dreaming about level grinding if you weren't so worried about passing Dr. Smith's class," he replied, a playful smirk on his face. "Don't you have enough to worry about with the new Sword of Aethelred expansion coming out next week?"

Mark’s face lit up, his fatigue momentarily forgotten. "Dude, don't even get me started on Sword of Aethelred. I've been saving up all my vacation time just for that release." He paused, a thoughtful frown creasing his brow. "Actually, speaking of vacation time..." he began, his voice trailing off.

Brendan, sensing a shift in Mark's demeanor, raised an eyebrow. "What's up? You finally decided to ditch those history notes and hit the Aethelred servers early?"

Mark shook his head, a nervous chuckle escaping his lips. "No, it's not that." He hesitated, fiddling with a loose button on his shirt. "I'm thinking of taking Sarah on a trip. Maybe somewhere tropical. Get away from all this stress for a bit."

Brendan smiled, genuinely happy for his friend. He knew how much Mark adored Sarah. They were practically inseparable, and their relationship had only grown stronger over the years they'd been together.

"That's awesome, Mark. She'll love it," Brendan replied, taking a sip of his now-lukewarm coffee. "Where are you thinking of going?"

"I haven't decided yet," Mark said, a shy grin spreading across his face. "But I have a feeling she'll say yes no matter where we go."

Brendan's eyebrows shot up, a sudden realization dawning on him. "Wait a minute," he said, his voice laced with disbelief. "You're not..."

Mark's grin widened, confirming Brendan's suspicions. "Yeah, man," he said, his voice filled with a quiet excitement. "I'm going to propose."

Brendan let out a whoop of joy, unable to contain his enthusiasm. He jumped up, knocking over a precariously balanced stack of textbooks, and grabbed Mark in a bear hug.

"Dude, that's fantastic! I'm so happy for you!" Brendan exclaimed, his voice booming with genuine happiness.

Mark laughed, returning the hug with equal enthusiasm. "Thanks, Bren. It means a lot." He stepped back, his face suddenly serious. "And, well, there's something else..."

"What is it?" Brendan asked, sensing a hint of hesitation in Mark's voice.

"I was hoping... well, would you do me the honor of being my best man?" Mark asked, his voice tinged with a mix of hope and uncertainty.

Brendan felt a wave of warmth wash over him, a warmth that had nothing to do with the stale air of his cramped apartment. This was a moment of genuine connection, a testament to the bond of friendship that had been forged over years of shared experiences, late-night study sessions, and countless hours spent exploring virtual worlds.

"Of course, Mark," Brendan replied without hesitation, his voice filled with emotion. "It would be my privilege."

Mark's face broke into a relieved grin, his eyes shining with gratitude. "Thanks, Bren. That means the world to me." He paused, his grin turning mischievous. "Just promise me you won't start any bar fights at the reception."

Brendan laughed, shaking his head. "No promises."

They shared a knowing grin, a silent acknowledgement of the unspoken bond that connected them, a bond that transcended the boundaries of virtual worlds and the pressures of real-life responsibilities. A bond that would endure long after the final exams were over, long after the servers shut down, and long after the last level was cleared.
