Chapter 10: Chapter 10: The Sewer Chase
Spying Through the Window
I pressed my face against the store window, peering inside like some kind of professional stalker.
And what did I see?
Five cursed rats.
Pulling a dress.
I blinked. "…Are they… stealing clothes?"
It wasn't just any fabric—they were dragging an expensive-looking dress toward the door.
If I rushed in now, I could probably stop them.
But…
I didn't just want to stop them.
I wanted to know where they were going.
So I waited.
The rats slipped outside, still dragging the dress, and I followed them from a distance.
---
Into the Canal
The rats moved quickly, expertly dodging puddles and debris as they carried their stolen prize.
I crept behind them, stepping carefully over wooden planks and avoiding loose stones.
Eventually, we reached the entrance of a narrow medieval canal.
The rats descended into the dark, damp tunnels.
I hesitated.
"...This is either really smart or really stupid."
With a deep breath, I followed them.
---
The Trap
The deeper I went, the worse the smell got. Rot, filth, something worse.
But the rats didn't seem to care. They just kept moving.
And then—
Click.
The floor beneath my foot shifted.
A metallic clank echoed through the tunnel.
The rats froze.
Then, in an instant, they vanished.
Not ran away.
Not scurried off.
They disappeared.
Leaving the dress behind.
I stared at the empty space where they had been. "My money… NOOOO!"
I grabbed the dress off the filthy ground, holding it like a lost treasure.
150 CP—gone.
---
The Walk of Shame
Dragging my soaking, sewage-covered body out of the canal, I climbed back into the streets just as the sun started rising.
As soon as I reached Nina's store, she was already there.
She took one look at me and recoiled. "…Why do you smell like that?"
I sighed, rubbing my face. "Don't ask."
Her eyes drifted down. "…And why are you holding my dress?"
I groaned. "I followed the rats. They were dragging this, so I waited to see where they were going. I followed them into the canal, but—there was a trap. It alerted them, and they disappeared."
Nina crossed her arms, thinking. "A trap… So something is protecting them."
I nodded. "Yeah, but more importantly—our deal is still active, right?"
Nina smirked. "Right. But first—
Take a shower. You smell so bad, I'm about to disappear."
