Lovers In Crime: Soulflames

Chapter 11: Escaping Engagement

BLITHE DEL ROSARIO

Back inside my room, the atmosphere was thick with tension, a palpable energy that crackled in the dim light. Shadows danced along the walls, mirroring the turmoil in my heart. Harleigh sat on the edge of the bed, her brow furrowed, uncertainty etched on her face. The weight of the moment pressed down on us, and I felt a rush of determination surge through me, my heart pounding with a mix of fear and exhilaration.

"Harleigh, you owe me this," I insisted, stepping closer, my voice urgent yet steady. "I just need time to make a plan to stop this engagement myself. If I don't get out now, I might never have the chance again."

Her eyes widened, a storm of emotions swirling within them. "But what if something goes wrong? What if they find out? I can't just pretend to be you, Blithe. It feels... wrong." Her voice trembled slightly, revealing the vulnerability she was trying to mask.

I softened my tone, sensing the fear radiating from her. "I know it's a lot to ask, but think about it. If you can just take my place for one night, it gives me the breathing room I need to figure this out. You could be my eyes and ears in there—gather information, learn their plans."

Harleigh bit her lip, clearly torn. "You make it sound so easy, but it's not. What if Victor looks at me and sees right through the disguise?"

"That's where the Chameleon ring comes in." I held it up, its shimmering surface catching the dim light and casting playful reflections around the room. "It'll change how you look, how you move. You just need to act confidently. Be me for a night, and I promise I will find a way to get us both out of this."

After a long silence, Harleigh finally sighed, her shoulders slumping in defeat. "Fine. But if this goes wrong, I'm holding you responsible," she said, a mixture of resignation and concern etched on her features.

Relief flooded my system, and I couldn't help but smirk. "Fair enough. But I promise, it will work."

With my heart racing, I glanced down at my bracelet. "B-Ai, contact Gabrielle," I commanded, my voice steady. The bracelet pulsed gently, responding to my call.

A moment later, Gabrielle appeared at the door, her expression a mix of curiosity and concern, long hair cascading around her shoulders like a dark waterfall. "What's going on?" she asked, stepping inside and immediately sensing the tension in the air.

"Gabrielle, I need you to take Harleigh's place tomorrow night," I said, my tone brokering no argument. "This is about buying me time to come up with a plan to stop this engagement."

Her eyes widened, but her loyalty shone through like a beacon. "Of course, milady. Whatever you need, I'm here for you." Gabrielle stepped forward, straightening her posture as if preparing to support me without hesitation.

"Are you sure you can handle it?" Harleigh asked, still apprehensive. "What if they ask you questions?"

Gabrielle smiled warmly, her confidence unwavering. "I've been with you long enough to know how milady thinks. I'll do my best to channel your essence. Just trust me, Miss Harleigh."

Gratitude swelled in my chest at Gabrielle's words. "Thank you, Gabrielle. I knew I could count on you."

Hours passed as we meticulously planned every detail, weaving a tapestry of deception. Gabrielle and I discussed logistics, poring over the expected guest list and potential pitfalls, while Harleigh remained quiet, her face a mixture of fear and determination.

"Okay, Miss Harleigh," Gabrielle said, breaking the silence. "You'll need to practice your posture. Stand up straight. Confidence is key." She demonstrated the poise she expected, shoulders back and chin high, exuding an air of authority.

"Right," Harleigh replied, rolling her eyes but straightening her back. "Is this how Blithe walks?" She attempted a bold stride, but it came off more like a waddle, her nerves evident in her shaky movements.

I chuckled, shaking my head, the tension momentarily lifting. "More like this." I demonstrated a graceful, confident stride, my movements fluid and composed, a picture of ease.

"Show-off," Harleigh muttered, but a small smile broke through her anxiety. "I'll need a miracle to pull this off."

"You'll be fine," I reassured her, my voice softening. "Just remember, you have to embody my spirit. It's not just about the looks; it's about the attitude."

As midnight approached, the room felt charged with anticipation, like the calm before a storm. A surge of adrenaline coursed through my veins. It was now or never. I took a deep breath and donned the disguise meant to transform me into Gabrielle. The Chameleon ring on my finger shimmered, its iridescent surface pulsating gently, ready to work its magic.

"Are you ready?" I asked, glancing at Harleigh, who stood nervously fidgeting with her own ring.

"Let's just get this over with," she replied, her voice wavering slightly as she tugged at the hem of her shirt, trying to steady her nerves.

With a quick flick of my wrist, I activated my ring. A warm glow enveloped me, and I felt the familiar tingling sensation as my features began to shift. My hair lengthened and darkened, my facial structure subtly altering to mimic Gabrielle's. The reflection in the mirror showed not just a new face but a new identity, one that felt both liberating and overwhelming.

"Wow, you look... different," Harleigh said, her eyes wide with admiration. "You could totally pass for someone else."

"Thanks, I think?" I replied with a laugh, my heart racing. "Just remember, you're the one who's going to be dazzling everyone tomorrow night."

As I spoke, Harleigh activated her Chameleon ring, and the transformation began. Her features softened, her posture straightened, and soon she bore an uncanny resemblance to me. The delicate curve of her lips and the sparkle in her eyes mirrored my own. It was surreal to watch her become me, and yet I felt a thrill of excitement at the thought of her stepping into my world, even for a night.

"Okay, that's creepy," she said, examining her new reflection. "But I can do this. I have to."

Gabrielle, standing nearby, activated her ring next. The glow enveloped her, and she transformed into a striking blend of Harleigh and me. The dark waves of her hair settled into a style that was effortlessly elegant, while her features took on an ethereal quality that made her look regal. She glanced at us, a confident smile playing on her lips. "Well, I think we all look fabulous."

After a while, I exchanged glances with my friends, a silent understanding passing between us. "Before I go," I said, turning to Harleigh, "remember to stay calm. Just be yourself, or the best version of me."

Harleigh nodded, her expression earnest. "I'll try. Just make sure you come back in one piece, okay?"

"Promise," I assured her, my heart swelling with gratitude for her support. "And if anything feels off, just text me. I'll be close by."

"Good luck," she replied, her eyes reflecting both fear and determination. "And don't do anything reckless!"

I chuckled, the sound lightening the mood. "Me? Never." With a final nod to Gabrielle, signaling her to take care of everything while I was gone, I revved the motorcycle's engine. The vibrations echoed my racing heart, and I felt a rush of excitement coursing through me.

In one fluid motion, I twisted the throttle and sped away, the mansion receding in my rearview mirror, a symbol of my past life. As the shadows of the estate faded into the distance, anger bubbled within me, a reminder of the constraints that had bound me for so long. How had it come to this? I felt trapped in a gilded cage, with my future being decided by others, and the engagement looming was the final straw.

But as the wind whipped through my hair, carrying away some of that anger, I felt a flicker of relief. For the first time in ages, I was free from the troubles—if only for a moment. The open road stretched before me, a dark ribbon of possibility winding into the horizon. I inhaled deeply, the cool night air filling my lungs, pushing out the frustration that had weighed me down.

Yet, beneath the relief was a simmering resolve. I would not let this be the end. I would find a way to have them payback for all the trouble I had endured. The night sky opened up before me, a canvas of stars, each one a reminder that I would no longer be bound by the walls of that mansion. I was venturing into the unknown, ready to fight back and reclaim what was rightfully mine.

With each mile I put between myself and that estate, I felt more alive, more determined. I would not rest until I had turned the tables on those who sought to control my life. Freedom awaited, and I was determined to seize it.
