Chapter 48: Proud of You
7:00 PM.
At Daisy's home.
Daisy was busy in the kitchen, her graceful figure barely concealed by the pink apron.
"Ding-dong..."
The sound of the doorbell rang out.
Daisy walked to the door, checked the video intercom, let out a sigh of relief, and opened the door.
Luke stood at the entrance, pulling out a bouquet of roses from behind him, "These are for you."
"Wow..." Daisy took the roses and smelled their fragrance, "Thank you, I didn't expect you to have a romantic side."
"As long as you don't find it old-fashioned."
"No, no matter when, women always love flowers." Daisy stepped aside, "Come in, dinner will be ready soon."
"Do you need any help?"
"Could you help me set the tableware?"
"Of course." Luke washed his hands and helped Daisy prepare the dinner.
Seared steak, grilled tuna, vegetable salad, mashed potatoes, mushroom soup, sourdough bread, red wine.
The two sat opposite each other at the dining table, Daisy lifted her glass of red wine, "Cheers to you."
"I should be toasting you for preparing such a sumptuous dinner."
They clinked glasses, and Daisy said, "I haven't cooked in a long time, how does it taste?"
Luke cut a piece of steak, took a bite, "Very tender, and the flavor is good, I really like it."
They ate and chatted, talking about dreams, hobbies, and some interesting stuff.
After dinner, Luke took the initiative to wash the dishes, another thoughtful gesture that added points in Daisy's heart.
Luke came out of the kitchen after washing the dishes, Daisy had already prepared a fruit plate and red wine.
Luke took a glass of red wine, clinked glasses with Daisy, and took a sip, "Want to talk about the case?"
"Can we? I know you have confidentiality agreements."
Luke joked, "We're not as strict as you lawyers."
Daisy laughed softly, "Any progress in the investigation?"
"We interrogated the robber Tim again, and he stuck to his statement, refusing to admit there were other accomplices."
"Why? Doesn't he want to turn state's witness?"
"It's hard to say for now, but he is very adamant, so we have to investigate from other angles."
Daisy pursed her lips, "Do you need my help?"
"Tomorrow we're going to visit the hospital where Lorne is staying, and take the opportunity to talk to his family. It would be best to get the will's beneficiaries to come to the hospital."
Daisy nodded, "I'll try my best."
...
Ome Hospital.
This is a private hospital located in the suburbs of Los Angeles, with beautiful surroundings, no shared wards, only double rooms, single rooms, and luxurious suites.
Daisy led Luke and David into the inpatient building.
David, looking at the hospital facilities, commented, "This place is even better than the hotels I go on vacation to."
"Perhaps this is the joy of being wealthy." Luke smiled and asked Daisy, "Has Lorne's family arrived?"
"I contacted Lorne's wife, asked her to bring their children to the hospital, as there are matters regarding the will to discuss. I believe they will come."
David asked, "How many beneficiaries of the will are there?"
"I don't know the specifics of the video will." Daisy led them up to the third floor and stopped in front of room 302, "Lorne is in this ward."
Luke whispered to David a reminder, "Try to speak as little as possible later."
That big brother's temper could definitely cause trouble.
David replied discontentedly, "You're not the Detective Chief yet, are you?"
"I will be soon." Luke followed Daisy into the ward.
The ward was about thirty square meters, with the restroom on the right, including the hospital bed, cabinets, a table, a television, and a faint smell of disinfectant in the room.
On the hospital bed lay a man in his fifties with brown hair and a medium build, clad in a light blue speckled hospital gown, his face covered with an oxygen mask.
To the left of the bed sat a middle-aged woman exuding opulence, and to the right stood a woman in her twenties.
There was a young doctor in a white coat, wearing a stethoscope, standing by the bed.
Luke had reviewed Lorne Bull's profile and knew about his family situation.
Lorne's wife was Caroline Bull; the two were in a second marriage.
Lorne brought a daughter, Sofia, into the marriage, and Caroline came with a son, Brooke Pierce.
Lorne and Caroline remarried and had another little daughter, Emma.
The bejeweled middle-aged woman asked, "Daisy, the lawyer, what do you want from us?"
"Sorry, I didn't make it clear on the phone, actually, I've run into some trouble and was hoping you could help," Daisy said apologetically, gesturing to Luke and David beside her, and introduced,
"This is Detective Luke, and that is Detective Chief David."
The middle-aged woman frowned slightly, demanding, "Daisy, what do you mean by bringing a detective here? You'd better give me a reasonable explanation."
Daisy walked over to the bedside, concerned, "How is Mr. Lorne doing? Is there any improvement?"
The middle-aged woman answered noncommittally, "Please do not change the subject."
Daisy sighed softly, "Since Mr. Lorne has been hospitalized, I've also had some unpleasant incidents during this time.
On March 2nd, someone broke into my office and stole files.
On March 3rd, I was robbed on the street.
On March 15th, someone sneaked into my house and installed surveillance to covertly film in my study.
I reported it to the police, and they think it might be related to Mr. Lorne's will, so they wanted us to have a chat."
The younger woman showed a surprised expression, "OMG, are you serious? That's terrifying."
"Miss Sofia, these two gentlemen are officers from the 'Robbery and Murder Department'; they can verify what I've said."
Luke took the opportunity to ask, "Miss Sofia, are you Mr. Bull's eldest daughter?"
"Yes," Sofia replied, then pointed to the middle-aged woman and the man in the white coat, "This is my stepmother Caroline, and that's Brooke."
Luke looked at Brooke, "Are you a doctor at this hospital?"
Before Brooke could answer, his mother Caroline said proudly, "My son is a resident doctor at this hospital, and he was also my husband's primary physician. Thanks to him... Lorne's condition has improved."
Luke inquired, "How is Mr. Lorne doing? What illness has he got?"
Brooke answered, "He is in a coma due to cerebral hypoxia and a head injury from the fall, with some brainstem damage. The situation is quite tricky."
Luke suggested, "May I take a look at the medical report?"
Brooke hesitated for a moment, "Sorry, that relates to the patient's privacy."
Luke turned to Sofia, "I heard your father left a video will, may I see it?"
Before Sofia could respond, her stepmother Caroline refused, "No, that's a very private matter, a farewell from Lorne to the family. What right do you have to demand that?"
Luke said, "This is not a demand, just a conversation."
"We have nothing to discuss," Caroline told Daisy, "Lawyer, please escort these two detectives out. Also, respect your profession, and if you have disclosed another will of my husband to the police, I will sue you."
"Without Mr. Lorne's permission, I won't show it to anyone. Sorry for the inconvenience my personal issues have caused you," Daisy finished, then looked at Luke,
"Let's go."
After leaving the patient room, David said indifferently, "I didn't say anything."
Luke put his arm around David's shoulder, "I'm proud of you."
David gave the finger, "You just plan on leaving like this?"
"What's your bright idea?"
"Follow me." David walked over to the triage desk and asked a nurse, "Excuse me, on which floor is the director's office?"
The nurse asked back, "What do you need?"
David flashed his badge.
"Fifth floor, at the very end of the east corridor."
"Thank you." After David's response, he took the elevator to the fifth floor.
Daisy stood beside Luke and whispered quietly, "Does your colleague know the director?"
Luke felt conflicted, "He will soon."
