Chapter 206: After Darkness Comes The Light (Long Chapter)_4
At first, she didn't clearly refuse, but then she met Gil, and the two of them got together.
You felt very lost and thought that Gil had taken Margret away from you. You harbored resentment towards him and even caused him trouble, asking him to leave Margret.
Later, when Margret found out about this, she confronted you fiercely and clearly rejected you.
You were furious and wanted to take revenge.
So, last night, you followed them and brutally killed Gil.
Even so, you still weren't satisfied and attacked Margret as well.
One reason was out of revenge and possessiveness; another was that it would also tarnish Margret's reputation.
But you didn't care, you could even pretend to be a warm-hearted man, comforting Margret, and eventually gaining her trust.
It could be said that you played a smart game...
William interrupted Luke, exclaiming, "No, that's a slander. I never did those things, I wouldn't kill anyone, let alone hurt Margret.
I'm not the person you describe."
Luke questioned, "Then why did you lie? If you didn't kill anyone, why deceive the police?
I've seen more suspects than you've served customers. Do you think you can fool me?"
William sighed heavily, ruffling his hair, "Sorry, I didn't mean to deceive you all. I just didn't want to be suspected by you."
Luke said sternly, "We had already gathered enough clues before we came.
If you lie, and your statements don't match the clues we have, we'll suspect you even more.
Just tell the truth, and we will clear it up; we never wrong an innocent man."
William was silent for a moment, then pursed his lips, "You guessed it, I indeed saw Gil and Margret yesterday.
And yes, I followed them, I lied.
I didn't mean to lie; I was just afraid you would suspect me.
Though I tracked them, I never thought of hurting them."
"Then why did you follow them?"
"I did it to protect Margret, worried that she might be harmed by Gil."
"But according to Margret, Gil was her boyfriend, and they were on good terms. Why did you think Gil would harm Margret?"
William snorted, "She doesn't really know Gil.
Gil comes from a wealthy family, is handsome, and many girls like him.
But he's not a good guy; he's a playboy. I have looked into him. I heard that he started having girlfriends as early as elementary school.
He even got a classmate pregnant; this guy is definitely bad news.
I was worried he would harm Margret and get her pregnant, which would ruin her life.
This guy is definitely capable of it."
"That's still no reason for you to follow them."
"I know what I did was wrong, but I was just worried about Margret."
"Since you followed them, did you witness the scene where Gil was killed?"
"No, my car broke down halfway. So, I lost them on the way and don't know where they went afterward.
If I had kept tracking them, maybe... this wouldn't have happened."
"Your car broke down? How coincidental," Luke was skeptical.
William pointed outside, "My car is outside; you can check it if you don't believe me."
Following his direction, Luke saw a gray Kia, quite worn out, obviously hand-me-down.
The three of them left the pizza restaurant and walked over to the gray Kia, where Luke ordered, "Open the car."
Reluctantly, William unlocked the car.
"What's wrong with your car?"
"It wouldn't start at the traffic light."
"Where did it break down?"
"At the intersection of Kangjia Road and Lion West Street."
Luke said to Xiao Hei standing beside him, "Check the dash cam."
"OK." Xiao Hei got into the car, pulled out the dash cam storage card, and plugged it into a computer to start reviewing the footage.
William said, "Vice-captain Luke, I am telling the truth. This car is almost twenty years old and often breaks down at critical moments."
Luke seemed reminded of something, "You mentioned Gil got a girl pregnant, do you know the woman's name?"
"I don't know.
I also heard it from a classmate; there's always various kinds of gossip in school. I can't guarantee it's true; you'll have to judge for yourself."
"Now that you know about Margret being hurt, what do you plan to do?"
"I will visit her and help her to the best of my ability."
Sitting in the Kia, Xiao Hei gestured, "Luke, I checked yesterday's dash cam footage; this guy didn't lie. His car really did break down last night."
Luke had Xiao Hei bring over the computer, and he placed it on the car's hood to inspect.
From the dash cam footage, it was clear that this car indeed followed the victim's car but broke down after some distance, quite a bit away from the crime scene.
Luke reviewed the video repeatedly to confirm whether William was really at the scene fixing the car or if it was a smokescreen.
Upon closely inspecting the video, he found that William didn't lie; he was indeed fixing the car at the scene and didn't sneak away.
He had an alibi.
Just as Luke was about to close the computer, he suddenly discovered another clue. A black Tesla sedan appeared in the dash cam, following not far behind a Cadillac...
This car immediately caught Luke's attention.
