Lord of Pain: Becoming the Crime Boss with my Pain Extraction System

Chapter 3: Awakening

They took a bus and arrived somewhere quiet and desolate. There were hardly any buildings around, but at least the street lights were still functioning.

They walked silently for a few minutes before Archie spoke,

"What do you think is inside the bag?"

Vincent had also pondered about it but he didn't entertain the idea for too long so curiousity wouldn't make him do something stupid.

"I don't know, but you shouldn't be thinking about that. Let's just focus on the money we are about to make,"

He placed his arm on the older man's shoulder,

"Didn't you say you needed to send your daughter some money for her college tuition, this is the universe coming to your rescue, so don't blow it," he smiled.

Archie also smiled, "you are right, I shouldn't concern myself with something like that, and what about you, what are you gonna do with your money?"

"What else, drink as much as I can and fuck as much as it can carry me, not like there's anything else I can do with it," a wide grin spread across his face as he spoke, just imagining the future left him with butterflies.

Archie chuckled, "you know you could do other things with that money, you are still young so maybe you could go back to school or even start a business. I've even heard of people making it big by investing in crypto online,"

"Yeah, I guess. But school didn't work out for me the first time so I don't think I can bring myself to do it again. And if business or crypto was truly as profitable as they made it seem everyone would have been rich. There is always a risk that I might lose everything so I just rather spend my money on happiness, who knows if I'll ever get a chance like this again"

Archie furrowed his brows, he could hardly understand Vincent's thought process, "but isn't there risk in everything we do-"

Suddenly the glare of a flashlight suddenly caught his face, freezing him in place. The light was followed by a voice.

"Who's there? This is a restricted area,"

Two men approached wearing police uniforms.

Vincent's blood froze, there wasn't supposed to be anyone else here. This place has been abandoned for years and there were no houses around the area.

'So why is the police here?'

His heart began beating faster as flashbacks from the 6 months in prison began to plague his mind.

And he wasn't the only one scared, Arch was already sweating profusely,

"Calm down Arch, I'll handle this," he whispered as he stepped forward.

"Officers, we were just passing through the area and decided to see the condition of the station,"

The officer squinted his eyes, "passing through the area?"

Vincent tried to remain calm but it was very difficult, "yes, we like to explore abandoned sites. We didn't know this area was restricted. In fact we would be taking our leave now. Let's go Arch,"

He turned to move but was stopped by one of the officers.

"Wait, what is in that bag?"

Vincent gritted his teeth, 'shit!'

He turned, trying to force a smile, "to be honest sir, even I don't know,"

The officer was confused by his reply, "you don't know what is in the bag you are carrying?"

"Fine then open it,"

Vincent didn't move at first, he was in the worst case scenario. If he had just taken a peak at what was inside the bag he would have at least known if it was safe to show them.

But one thing was for sure, whatever was in that bag wasn't meant to be seen by the police.

"Officer I'm afraid I can't do that," he sighed, as he considered throwing a final hail Mary. "We were sent by Don Angel,"

It was no secret that there were a lot of cops under his payroll, the bosses all had strong connections within the government. No matter who it was, nobody would want to get on his bad side.

"Oh, why didn't you just say that," the officer said with a calm tone.

But before Vincent could breathe a sigh of relief a loud bang echoed in the quiet night. Blood splashed across his face as Archie fell to the floor.

It was a perfect shot in the middle of his forehead, killing him instantly.

"Huh?"

Vincent's eyes were filled with sudden horror and shock, without giving him any time to process what he had just witnessed the officer fired a second shot missing his head by just a bit.

Vincent needed no other warning he turned around and sprinted but he only made it a few steps away before a bullet hit him in his back.

The pain exploded through his body, it was like he was stabbed with a red-hot knife. It was too much to bear, causing him to drop to the floor.

Through the pain he heard a female voice,

"What's all the commotion?" She asked.

"Madame, we were just about to finish up here," The officer replied, "seems like Angel already suspected that it was a trap and sent only two men,"

She sighed, "That sly bastard… retrieve the bags and leave the bodies, I'll have my men come and clean it up,"

"Yes Madame," the officer replied with a slight bow.

They took the bags and followed her away leaving Vincent to slowly bleed to his death.

Laying there in a puddle of his own blood Vincent watched as the world faded around him. His life began to flash through his eyes and the pain from the bullet wound was no more damning.

He chuckled as he realized a sad truth, 'No one is going to miss me'

He had absolutely no one waiting for him so his death wouldn't even be noticed. He wasn't really bothered by that but it left a question in his mind.

'Did I actually live or did I simply exist? I spent every day of my life looking for my next meal. I always pursued happiness in my imaginations but I was never able to do it in reality. Maybe it's better it ended this way, I would have spent the rest of my life just surviving instead of living'

The darkness was slowly beginning to cover his sight until heard a voice.
