Lord of Mysteries: The Traveler

Chapter 7: Chapter 7: Father

After conducting experiments, Florent successfully confirmed that transporting other objects through the paper door required more spiritual energy than transporting his own body.

Through more precise testing, he also determined that clothing of the same weight required less spiritual energy to transport than other objects of the same weight.

Later, Florent repeated the experiment with objects and clothing of the same volume, and the results were the same.

He concluded that objects closer to him in proximity required less spiritual energy to transport than those that had never been in contact with him, even if they were inorganic...

As for other people's bodies, although Florent hadn't tested it, he suspected it would consume even more spiritual energy.

Based on these simple experiments, Florent made an inference: "The 'Apprentice' requires less spiritual energy to transport items closely related to themselves than items with no connection to them."

Although 'Door Opening' had no offensive capabilities, it didn't stop him from developing it into an offensive method. The most important tool for this was the piece of paper passed down on his Freeman side of the Abraham family...

After rummaging through his home, Florent found a very sharp dagger.

The dagger had a black handle, and its elliptical design made it compact, almost as if it could radiate a chilling aura. The blade, which seemed to exude a cold sharpness, indicated that this was no mere decorative item.

It was said that this dagger was forged from meteorite iron and some extraordinary materials by a craftsman as a practice piece. While it had no extraordinary abilities, the blade was incredibly hard and sharp, requiring no maintenance...

Even now, after being stored away for so long, the blade remained as sharp as new.

This dagger was the only item in the Freeman branch of the family that could be considered an offensive extraordinary object.

When Florent was a child, he often saw his father, Martin Abraham (Freeman publicly), handling it. Of course, as Florent grew older, he became the one who frequently played with the dagger.

Florent sheathed the dagger and tucked it into the inner layer of his clothing, feeling its coldness against his skin. He was grateful that, although modern clothing tended to be tight and lightweight, his preference for looser garments allowed him to conceal the dagger without it being noticeable.

After enveloping the dagger with his spiritual energy several times, Florent's head suddenly felt as if it were being struck repeatedly by a giant hammer. A strange sound, neither a whisper nor a shout, echoed in his ears...

When he tried to ignore it, it felt like a mosquito buzzing annoyingly, tempting him to listen closely. But when he focused, the sound grew louder, as if trying to implant something destructive into his mind.

It felt like a thousand needles were piercing Florent's brain. He felt as though he had stayed up for three days and nights playing games without sleep, only to realize he had to attend a class where the teacher was watching him closely, preventing him from dozing off...

The dizziness and nausea, with no way to vent, drove him to the brink of madness.

Suppressing the urge to scream, Florent stumbled to his bedroom and somehow made it to his bed. He assumed a meditative posture, gradually calming his thoughts until, without realizing it, he fell asleep...

...

The next day, Florent woke up in a daze to find his clothes in disarray.

Fortunately, even in his confused state the previous night, he had remembered to securely sheathe the dagger. Otherwise, it might have killed him in his sleep...

However, the dagger had still left painful bruises on his stomach.

After placing the dagger on his desk, Florent rubbed the red and slightly bruised marks on his stomach, deeply engraving a lesson in his mind:

'Never exhaust your spiritual energy, especially when you haven't yet fully digested your potion.'

After quickly washing up, he sat back at his desk. On the desk was a beautifully designed calendar with a circle around July 6th...

Florent was certain he had never marked this date, but for the moment, he couldn't figure out what the circle meant.

After some thought, he decided to check the astrological phenomena for the next day in the secret compartment of his study.

If his guess was correct, it was fortunate that his transmigration had happened yesterday. If it had been today, he might have died.

Opening the seemingly ordinary surface of the study, Florent found books that could fill three or four shelves neatly arranged in this hidden compartment.

After some consideration, he took out a book from the top left corner.

It was a black notebook, entirely handwritten, with neat and elegant script.

Opening the title page, Florent saw the author's name and a message:

<...Martin Abraham's Astrological Journal~ A Gift to My Beloved Son, Florent...>

Suddenly, Florent remembered the heartwarming memories of his father...

Martin was a man with a scholarly air, an amateur writer, and a professional lawyer. His son, Florent, aspired to pull the Abraham family out of the abyss and become a powerful figure like their ancestor, Bethel Abraham.

During Florent's bedtime stories, he always begged Martin to tell him about the glorious history of the Abraham family during the Fourth Epoch...

Although Martin didn't want Florent to become a Beyonder and experience the pain he himself had endured, he was willing to help his son fend off predictable dangers, such as the annual full moon.

For the sake of his son's naive dream, Martin, who had previously only half-heartedly played the role of an 'Astrologer', changed his ways. He began observing the stars every night and reading various books on astronomical phenomena.

Unfortunately, great paternal love meant little in the mysterious world...

After Martin calculated the full moons for the next five or six years and fully digested the 'Astrologer' potion, he turned his attention to the annual blood moon.

After deducing the dates of the blood moons for the coming years and marking them at the back of his notebook, tragedy struck...

One silent night, Martin strangled himself to death...

It was certain that this incident was related to a 'Great Old One', as the blood moon was caused by the 'Primordial Moon'...

Florent could only view this from the perspective of an outsider, not daring to recall any information about this 'Great Old One'...

Remembering would lead to corruption, and hatred would only render his father's sacrifice meaningless.

Unfortunately, Florent, who had been raised single-handedly by his father, could only alternate between nostalgia for his father's love, and self-loathing, gradually sinking into isolation and becoming the shut-in he was today.

Although Florent didn't share the same feelings, he still felt sorrow for the destruction of something beautiful...

However, for the sake of his own life, he dared not complain or imagine anything further...
