Chapter 6: Memories
New Trier, Intis Empire. Afternoon of March 25, 428. Michael's room.
Michael sat on his bed, drinking a peppermint tea. He looked around as he hummed an unknown melody.
The walls of the room were painted a viridian green, which made a beautiful contrast with the dark brown table and bookshelf.
The room wasn't large nor did it have many decorations. The only part that was distinguishable from other rooms was the portrait of the Burey Family that all members had in their rooms.
The sunlight that came from the window was enough that lighting a candle wasn't needed.
I mean, I know I should be doing some planning or trying to understand the situation I'm in, but like, this is so good...
A nice peppermint tea, no one to bother me, this transmigration thing isn't so bad after all...
But it's weird. I studied all those years for basically nothing. It's not like I can use my degree for something in this world...
At least I know something about the Beyonder world...
Michael took a sip of his tea as he admired the tranquility of the day.
He got up and picked a book from the bookshelf.
"Book of Revelation, not interested. Balam culture and its uniqueness, not now. Loen Republic history, well, that sounds good."
Michael took the book, sat down on his bed, and started to read.
"The Loen Republic was founded in 170 of the Sixth Epoch after a war against Lenburg for independence.
Ever since then, Loen adopted a direct voting system, where a citizen could vote for someone to represent them in Congress.
These elections happened every 10 years for Presidents and Ministers, 5 years for Senators and local state governments, such as Mayor, Councilor, and state Governor.
During the first years of the Loen Republic, only people considered worthy and notable could vote. This rule caused rebellions and riots all around the country.
These rebellions culminated in a civil war between the Revolutionary Union and the Republic Army. The war started in 210 and ended in 215 when Intis used the civil war chaos to invade Loen.
Intis invaded at the border between Intis and Loen on the Hornacis Mountain Range, which at the time was Loen's territory.
Loen's Revolutionary Union and the Republic Army signed a temporary ceasefire to fight against Intis.
Since Loen owned the territory and knew its lands, they had a clear advantage against the unprepared Intis Army.
The Intis Army had to climb the Hornacis Mountain while being careful for any traps from Loen.
Intis had planned to conquer Loen quickly, and because of that, they weren't carrying enough supplies for the time the invasion lasted.
Lenburg, who didn't want to let Intis win more territory in the Northern Continent, entered the war as an ally of Loen.
On January 21, 216, Lenburg invaded Intis at the border between the Segar province and Intis. The Intis army was unprepared to fight on two battlefronts, and because of the absolute defeat during the first invasion of Loen, the number of soldiers that Intis possessed was extremely low.
After two months of battles with Loen and Lenburg, Intis surrendered on March 27, 216.
As a consequence of the war, Intis had to cede half of the Feysac province to Loen and pay a total of 10 million pounds to Lenburg.
After the war with Intis ended, both sides of the Loen civil war agreed to a peaceful end to the conflict. It was decided that every Loen citizen over the age of 18 who could write their name was eligible to vote."
"Tsk, I can clearly see that whoever wrote this is from Intis. They portrayed Loen as an unstable state, Lenburg as cowards who only attacked when Intis was weak, and made Intis look like a victim. If that's a neutral opinion, I'm a unicorn."
....
Backlund, Loen Republic. 15:00 P.M., March 25, 428. Loen Congress.
The congressmen entered the Congress and sat in their designated chairs, talking to each other as they waited for the session to begin.
The Loen Congress was constructed in a circular shape with two floors. The congressmen's chairs were arranged in a circular fashion, some on the first floor and others on the second.
In the middle of the room was the Supreme Court Judges' table. They were responsible for organizing and maintaining order during the sessions.
The Minister of War entered and sat in one of the Supreme Court Judge's chairs.
The Loen President, Ludwig Vivaldi, entered the room with him and sat by his side.
"I, Ludwig Vivaldi, 25th President, declare the beginning of this session."
"Today's topic is the war against Intis."
As these words reached the congressmen's ears, they had varied reactions. Some stared in shock, some frowned in confusion, and some even smiled in agreement.
The Minister of War stood up, and his deep voice echoed in the room, "We have received reliable information that Intis will lose its most potent weapon in the coming months."
....
New Trier, Intis Empire. 16:00 P.M., March 25, 428. Burey's Villa.
Michael walked towards Rebecca's room with two glasses, one containing peppermint tea and the other water.
He placed both glasses on the floor and knocked on the door.
"Becca, are you awake? I'm worried. Please talk to me."
Inside the room, Rebecca woke up with the knocks. Her eyes widened as she remained in complete silence.
"Becca, I'm going to enter, okay?"
Michael opened the door, and Rebecca immediately ran to the other side of the room.
Michael picked up both glasses and placed them on a table near the door. "You monster! Give my brother back!"
I thought I wouldn't have to lie in this world too, but I guess there are some things that won't change no matter the world...
"B-Becca, what do you mean? I-it's me, Mike!"
"The hell you are! I saw it! You killed my brother!"
"Oh, so that's what she saw..."
Michael turned to the table and dipped one of his fingers in the peppermint tea without letting Rebecca see.
He spread the peppermint tea on his eyes.
"It's extremely diluted, but I hope that menthol works..."
He turned back to Rebecca as tears started to fall down his eyes.
"Becca, p-please listen to me! I swear, I'm Mike!"
After seeing her brother crying, Rebecca doubted her sanity and powers for a second.
"I know what you saw yesterday was bad, but please let me explain!"
"I was going to die. For a second, my heart even stopped, but then I woke up, and my memories were a mess."
"I know it'll sound ridiculous, but I think I got someone else's memories, and that cured me!"
Michael's tears kept falling as he talked.
Rebecca just listened in shock. She didn't know what to believe anymore.
"When I got that person's memories, I also lost some of mine. That's why you didn't recognize me while using your powers, Becca. Please, I swear! I'm still your little brother!"
Rebecca suddenly started crying as she hugged Michael.
"M-Mike! I-I'm sorry. I'm sure it was scary. I'm really sorry for calling you all those names."
"Don't worry, Becca. I know it wasn't easy for you too..."
Yeah, just like I thought. Her mental state got compromised. There's no way someone would fall for that cheap trick if they were sane...
