Lord of Mysteries: Goddess of Origin

Chapter 10: Contingency

"A possible deity's descent"

Selina's voice echoed throughout the majestic palace, and settling deeply into the hearts of the trio.

A-A deity's descent!? No gods have walked this world for the past Epoch! Audrey felt a nameless horror bloomed in her chest.

From the scriptures of her religion believing in the Evernight Goddess, after the 4th Epoch, deities have stoop aloft, never setting foot onto the mortal world again.

But what the silver-haired lady is stating is that a descent of a god would befall onto humanity?

Disturbed by Mrs. Lover's information, as a punisher himself, Alger took the initiative to rebuke, saying in a grave voice. "Ms. Lovers, what you're saying can be used to arrest us in false information. Without any valid evidences or initial reasons, It would be difficult or completely impossible for us to report such activity, especially when it concerns a mystical events."

Occupying the Seat of Honor, Mr. Fool(Zhou Mingrui) found Mrs. Lover's request absurd. Attempting to ask them to report a criminal activity pertaining a god being summoned by an evil cult, this would definitely raise suspicions of his identity!

The Fool remained silent, unperturbed.

"Let me explain..." Selina paused momentarily, assembling her memories of the past. She continued, "Situated in the Winter County's farther end, where the Tussock river meets the Mirminsk Mountain Range. A town called Milo experienced a cult invasion behind the scenes, occupants being replaced by insect people, capable of reshaping their forms, mirroring others completely undetected."

After hearing Mrs. Lover, Audrey could feel her hair strands stands on each ends, fingers clenching the hems of her dress. Insect people!? Capable of Reshaping!?

And Milo... Is Ms. Lovers referring to the Postal Town which travelers often stopped to rest? Ever since Mr. Gustav's invention of the steam train, its economy dropped significantly...

After a slight interval, Selina resumed saying in mellow voice, trying her best to minimized its horror towards the trio.

"I have an ally, who was held captive by these group of individuals. She was put into a psychological hypnotism, either forcing or periodically making her accept certain things, including a marriage contract, which will be held the day after tomorrow. In one of her entries, after her becoming a runaway bride, she mentioned of a feeling being encircled by people draped in robe, chanting what seems to be a ritual, around a mountainous mounds of corpses."

Audrey remained stationary, not daring to interrupt nor take any sudden movements. She was frozen in her chair, listening attentively to Ms. Lovers.

"I've instructed her of a plan to escape, but each route leads to the discovery of the cult. They're able to traverse distances in an instant, they are capable of such horrifying feats through the utilization of mystical artifacts they possess. So I intend to consult official beyonders in order to raid the cult's operation, planning to redo their initial ritual which have apparently failed." Exhaling her held breathe, Selina hovered her gaze over the trio.

Below the dome of the ancient and majestic palace, depicting the residence of giants.

The long-bronze table was filled with silence.

The trio could feel the pressure and weight of her ally's situation.

Through their inference, it is said that after the first wedding, she was subjected into a ritual immediately after, this makes it certain that her ally is the vessel—the cult used in order to accomplish a deity's descent and are attempting to redo the descent ritual, with slight adjustments compared to the initial attempt.

Stammering his thoughts, Alger regained his composure, responding in solemnity, "Your explanation can be partially believable, but it contradicts ours. Please consider our situation once we report such significant event, we would be prone to investigation, potentially leading to our discovery. Also, we didn't address why you couldn't do it personally?"

Alger felt the urgency of Mrs. Lover's request. To him, any activities of an evil cult or organization is put into highest priority as part of official beyonders. That is the main purpose of their organization, to fend off evil and malicious entities that could potentially harm the innocents.

But he fought his impulse to agree without fully grasping the underlying concept of the request. The risks clearly out-weights the benefits he could reap!

After a moment of silence, Selina remembered the parked carriages outside of the manor's front yard.

With this in mind, she took a deep breath and replied, "Because I'm incapable of doing so... "

Alger's eyes narrowed at Selina's response.

"But in order to lessen your burden, there should be a caravan of cargo carriages that will be traveling back from my ally's manor to Milo, its empty loads would board a steam train to Tingen City. Contained in one of the empty crates or clipped into its wooden board is a letter and an evidence placeed separately from a crate of one carriage to the other, which you can use to initiate an investigation of the official beyonders. Trains move swiftly at dawn. If all goes well, the letter could reach the city by dusk tomorrow."

T-The tarot club have only been established—and you're telling me... that it will be immediately involved in a case of an evil god's descent!? Audrey was a lost of words. Everything are escalating way too quickly!

Selina thought of it deeply, if she should include her personal affairs with the mysterious gathering she have just attended. But if she took matters into her own hands, failure is certain, possibly leading to a much gruesome ending. Her utilization of contacting with the outside world through the space above the gray fog is her only method of survival and a heaven-sent occurrence.

"Don't worry, after a successful report, your troubles would not be in vein." She added, tightly clenching her intertwined hands beneath.

Silence resumed in the majestic castle.

The fog churned and contorted, resounding more prominent than the trio occupying the mottled-bronze table.

After a long silence, Alger broke into character, replying to Selina. "With Mr. Fool witnessing your request, I trust you should be telling the truth and would not commit perjury."

Pausing for a moment, he resumed, "I will try my best to get my connections to inspect the incoming cargos in Tingen City and retrieve the evidence along with the letter... I can tell you the results here, after the next gathering."

"I-I will also try my best to inform the officials about this matter... As soon as possible!" Audrey hurriedly added. She could feel the injustice—the innocent people of Milo being massacred by evil cultists without facing atonement, with her capabilities as a daughter of a noble, she couldn't sit by idly!

Selina heaved a sigh of relief, knowing she have gained a reliable allies in face of her situation.

At that moment, Mr. Fool, occupying the Seat of Honor, spoke in a deep tone.

"Alright, that will be all for today's gathering."

The trio stood up.

Alger was the first to bow, followed by the two ladies, they each said in unison.

"By your will."

As the host, Mr. Fool, is preparing for their departure. With a smile, he said, "Let us look forward to the next gathering."

The 'stars' brightened once more as the crimson light receded like water. Just as Audrey, Selina and Alger heard Mr. Fool's words, their figures turned into a blur as they phased away.

In a second, the 'projection' shattered as the gray fog restored its silence.

...

In the private manor, situated in the outskirts of Milo.

Selina's eyes fluttered open, finding herself back in her room, slightly disoriented.
